105.3____ Definitions. For the purposes of this part Parachutist means a person who intends to exit an aircraft while in flight using a single-harness, dual parachute system to descend to the surface. Approved reserve parachute: A certified parachute assembly that is worn in conjunction with a main parachute assembly and used by one person for premeditated jumps. An emergency parachute assembly: A certified parachute assembly that is worn by one person for emergency, (unpremeditated) use only. (PIA TS-135) Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Here is the scenario. Acme Parachute Co. had hired you to complete the required testing for TSO-23d certification of their new Catch me/Kiss me Emergency Parachute Assembly. (pilots rig) The system is complete with an all new harness design and 12 foot Cross Form canopy. They hand you a Test Plan and 2 of their new rigs. AS8015-B, 4.3.9 requires that at least 4 of the tests be live jumps. Part 105.43 states: No person may conduct a parachute operation using a single-harness, dual-parachute system, and no pilot in command of an aircraft may allow any person to conduct a parachute operation from that aircraft using a single-harness, dual-parachute system, unless that system has at least one main parachute, one approved reserve parachute, and one approved single person harness and container that are packed as follows: Also see AC-205-2C, Sec. 6a. The question is, how do you conduct a “Parachute operation” involving live jumps on this new system when neither the canopy of the harness is “approved” without violating FAA regulations is some way? What rating or certificate must you hold to conduct these tests and/or make the live jumps? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Jerry, I spent over 20 years involved in testing. I have done live jumps on some really strange shit. If it came right down to it, I doubt if I could release the shackle on an RSL. If the test plan called for it, I would modify it with something that could be located, grabbed and pull with some chance of success. Even then I would not try it under a high speed going through 2,000. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

A ROL change to a BOC is changing the placement of the Main deployment device. It in no way "affects the strength or operation of the auxiliary parachute, including the harness." So it seen that it is not an alteration to an approved parachute system. According to AC-105-2C approval is not needed for a method of altering a main. a. An alteration to an approved parachute system used for intentional jumping must be done in accordance with approved manuals and specifications and only by those with specific authorization to perform that alteration. Specific approval is not needed for the method of altering a main parachute. A person seeking authorization to alter an approved parachute system should proceed as follows: Since Part 65 specifically allows the next person jumping a main to alter it, it would seem that anyone could change out an ROL for a BOC. (b) No person may pack, maintain, or alter any main parachute of a dual-parachute system to be used for intentional parachute jumping in connection with civil aircraft of the United States unless that person— (3) Is the person making the next parachute jump with that parachute in accordance with §105.43(a) of this chapter; or My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

My only jump on a delta2 was with that death wrap...it was sub-terminal and still painful. Koppel if you still need info you could try PMing DavidLayne...he has one and might have some info on it. Anyone ever give any thought as why we don’t jump things like the Delta 2 anymore? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

I have been in Florida, Z-hills in 1981 and Deland a few years ago but have lived in CA since before I started jumping. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
When the harness/container and the reseve canopy for that matter are tested and manufactured how in the hell do they know what kind of main canopy will be used much less how it will be packed. Can you explain how the method of packing a main "that affects the strength or operation of the auxiliary parachute,"? My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

A very astute observation Grasshopper.

Does that mean you can't or won't explain it? Is there some secret to what 65.111 says that I am missing? My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

And the regulation states: Part 65.111 (b) No person may pack, maintain, or alter any main parachute of a dual-parachute system to be used for intentional parachute jumping in connection with civil aircraft of the United States unless that person— (3) Is the person making the next parachute jump with that parachute in accordance with §105.43(a) of this chapter; or Does that not say that anyone can replace a line set on a main if they jump it next? If it does not say that, please explain what it says. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

If 65.111 was written to address packing only why does use the terms, "pack, maintain, or alter". It also states that a non-certificated person making the next jump on the main canopy may, "pack, maintain or alter" that canopy. 65.111 Certificate required. (b) No person may pack, maintain, or alter any main parachute of a dual-parachute system to be used for intentional parachute jumping in connection with civil aircraft of the United States unless that person— (3) Is the person making the next parachute jump with that parachute in accordance with §105.43(a) of this chapter; or Until this group publishes a new version, don't you think we should abide by the one that is now in effect? AS-8015B 4.3.6 Functional Test (Normal Pack All Types): For all 4.3.6 tests the maximum allowable opening time for parachute canopies with a maximum operating weight of 250 lb (113.4 kg) or less, is 3 s from the moment of pack opening. For parachutes with a maximum operating weight of greater than 250 lb (113.4 kg) the maximum allowable opening time shall be increased by 0.01 s for every pound of maximum operating weight in excess of 250 lb (113.4 kg). Alternatively altitude loss instead of time may be measured and the maximum allowable altitude loss may be calculated as follows. For all 4.3.6 tests the maximum allowable altitude loss for parachutes with a maximum operating weight of 250 lb (113.4 kg) or less is 300 ft (91.5 m) from the altitude at pack opening. For parachutes with a maximum operating weight of greater than 250 lb (113.4 kg) the maximum allowable altitude loss shall be increased by 1 ft for every pound of maximum operating weight in excess of 250 lb (113.4 kg). NOTE: Altitude loss measurements must be measured along a vertical trajectory only. However, the deviation from the vertical produced by a gliding main parachute descending with a vertical velocity of less than 20 FPS (6.1 m/s) shall be acceptable. 4.3.6.2 Breakaway Drop Tests: Eight drops shall be made by a person weighing not more than the maximum operating weight by breaking away from an open and normally functioning main parachute canopy with a vertical velocity of less than 20 FPS (6.1 m/s) at the time of breakaway and actuating the reserve pack within 2 s of the breakaway. If a reserve static line is part of the assembly, no less than 4 of the breakaway drops shall be made with the reserve static line actuating the reserve pack. The parachute canopy must be functionally open within the time +2 s, or altitude, obtained in 4.3.6 from the time of breakaway. Sparky

Once again, would you post a copy of this letter from SPI? I have not been able to find it on their web site or in any of their manuals. Where did you find documentation that RWS approved the packing of other reserves in the Vector 2? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
