Re: [mjosparky] Fatality: Texel - Adrian Nicolas - 17 September 2005
mjosparky replied to raymod2's topic in Gear and Rigging
But it does matter in what direction you are going 78 mph. If it is horizontal, no problem. It has to be vertical to count. There are very few canopy pilots that can do this. Spark My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
When Apple Valley DZ was open, they offered high altitude jumps, 30,000 feet, for about 2 years. I taught the ground school and JM’d the jumps. The requirements were: 1. D Lic. 2. 3rd class med. 3. Attend a high altitude chamber class. On Sunday the jumper would make 2 familiarization jumps from 12,500 feet with full gear. On Monday jumper would make jump from 24,000 feet. The following Monday jumper would jump from 30,000 feet. Equipment provided: 1. Flight helmet 2. MBU-12 O2 mask 3. Twin 53 bail out bottles 4. Pre-breathing console (6 man) 5. Phys Tec 6. JM 7. 2 pilots The environment at 24,000 feet plus is very hostile and you can end up dead very quickly. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Who would win in a bareknuckle fight, no weapons allowed?
mjosparky replied to unformed's topic in The Bonfire
As in any fight, the winner is usually the one that is "willing." Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

“It is supposed to be done!” “Actually it is; it's spelled out somewhere regarding canopy history. It is also one of the suggested tasks in the Practical test for riggers.” Has anyone found anything about sewing data cards together being required? I have looked in Part 65, Part 105, AC-105C, AC-65-C, Parachute Rigger Examiner Handbook – April 2004, Practical Test Standards, Parachute Rigger Knowledge Test Guide and asked 2 DPREs in my area and can’t find anything that even mentions this practice. “Younger riggers nowadays” If younger riggers are going to learn, they need to be taught. And where did I say anything about a high risk of failure. This is what I said. And I believe this is what got the thread locked. It might be time to move on. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Did Kittenger really go supersonic?
mjosparky replied to SkydiveJack's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I agree with you that his jump was amazing in it own right. But he did not reach supersonic as documented in several works including the post action report. (I no longer have access to this report) I believe his speed did reach 614 mph. It is also documented that he deployed a drogue for stability purposes which prevented him from claiming a “freefall” record. I worked with him briefly on the TAME program and spoke to him on several occasions about the jump. I do not feel he made a false claim or tried to lie. I think the PR people of the Excelsior Project may have over stated the facts and Joe just got caught up in it. http://records.fai.org/parachuting/current.asp?id1=201&id2=1&id3=14 Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

military parachute Question?????
mjosparky replied to clintonradloff's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Some of the older jumpers might have jumped the canopy that is packed into an NB-8 system. It is a C-9, 28 foot flat. Back in the day, they were called "Cheppos" and modified for sport use. Double L, 5TU, 7TU. I don't know anyone who jumps them today. -
Chuck, Great rant. I think that every rigger that reads it will appreciate what you are saying. Like you said they are few and far between, but they sure can piss you off. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
