"A"Lic. and 3000 jumps.....a little deference here I would say. Yes I would. And it would probably be to an instructor with less experience then I have but who's advice and training will help keep me alive. $100 or 2 thousand dollars, which is it. There is a big difference. Skydiving ain’t cheap, tell your friend to quit whining or take up bowling.

should it be required to jump without an AAD?
mjosparky replied to shermanator's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think you are missing the point. An AAD and a reserve are the same thing. You can jump without and AAD legally but not without a reserve. An AAD adds another layer of safety but also another layer of complexity to the equation. An AAD causes some jumpers to believe that when they cutaway they can stop thinking. The reserve is just that, a second parachute. But just like the main if the jumper does not think and pull it at an approbate time it is useless. Skydiving is a thinking persons sport, you quit think at freefall speed and you will die. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

Well what is it? 5 months, 3-4 months or maybe 10 months. I jumped for 30 years and made almost 3000 jumps. But I have not jumped in almost 3 years. If I decided to get back in the air the first thing I would do is go to Jim Wallace and ask what I needed to do to get current. What ever he said is just what I would do. talk to your instructors! (help a retarded moron)
mjosparky replied to virgin-burner's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Every piece of equipment you jump with has at one time killed someone. I am talking gloves to shoes. Most of it has saved way more than it has killed. Your chances of surviving a problem go way up if you have an RSL and an AAD on you rig. Anyone who jumps without these 2 items without a valid reason is being foolish. I used neither on one rig for many years because of test scenarios I was involved in. But when sport jumping I thought they were great. Lose the ego and go with what has been proven to work. No one is trying to flame your ass, they are trying to save your ass. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
Tom, That is not a shortcoming of the AAD it is a shortcoming of the jumper for not understanding how they work. If you were that far into the reserve pull you were far ahead of most. Your routine of “turning it on” and make sure it is “hooked up” and then forgetting it will serve you well, stick with it. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

I just wasn't able to locate the document to prove or disprove my suspicions Quote If you check my history on these boards I think you will find that I can locate the “documents” and I have always been up front about that. My point is if you don’t have the facts don’t give the advice. No flame intended.

The FAA that’s who. See attachment. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
You seem bent on not letting a little bit of knowledge get in the way of “facts”. Why do you continue to post as fact things you can’t back up with documentation? Have you ever been involved in a TSO test program? Do you have any idea what is involved in the test? Have you ever compared the difference between testing for TSO-C23b, TSO-C23c or TSO-23d? It is just my opinion but maybe you should keep your advice to those areas that you have some expertise in. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Are you sure about that? I will bet my next retirement check that they were not built by riggers and there is a good chance they were not tested by riggers. You should try using punctuation, makes it much easier to read what you post. Attached is a response for PD on the subject. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Another thing to factor in is the fact that you have4 links on a canopy. All thing being equal that would give you 4 times the working load of just one. Instead of 615 pounds you would have 2460. This is theory and mileage may differ. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Continuous lines are not actually continuous. The “a” line goes from the attachment point down to the connector link, goes around the link and returns to the “b” line attachment point. But it is not free floating. Just above the link the “continuous” line is zigzagged to itself thus creating 2 individual lines starting at the canopy and ending at the link. If the line is 600 pounds then each leg of the line will support 600 pounds. I hope this helps. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

According to your theory pulling the reserve ripcord does not ensure that the reserve will deploy. Does that mean that you would rely solely on you RSL/Skyhook/DRX to deploy your reserve and not pull your reserve ripcord? It’s just my opinion but that is a really bad attitude to have. I agree with you on this point. But I see “customization” such as, tie died, special foam back pads, 26 colors, embroidery on the handles and other just for looks items that serve no function except to increase the cost of production. Manufactures will build anything jumpers want. In my opinion jumpers have driven up the cost of rigs through their need to be “cool”. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
I am sorry to have offended you. But the fact remains you do not have the knowledge or the experience to challenge someone of Mick’s background. Like me you hold a Senior Riggers Cert. That is just a lic. to start learning. After you have practiced your craft for 5 or 10 years and been exposed to some of the many rigging problems out there you will have a reason to be offended. What would you suggest? Order your rig to big in case you gain weight? Or order it to small on the chance you lose weight? It costs the same to build it either way. It takes the same amount of time to cut an 18” MLW as it does to cut the parts for a 13” MLW. The manufacture of a harness/container system is extremely labor intensive. For years they were built by skydivers who had some good ideas about what they wanted in a rig. They were not very good business men and usually made very little profit. Now that the cost of rigs reflects the cost of R&D, testing, materials and labor to produce something to a very limited market that market squeaks. Skydiving is an expensive past time, deal with it. They are called "cross ports" and they help your canopy open. After a few hundred jumps they can become a little frayed. If you have the experience to jump a katana you had better spend some time learning about you gear. It is not rocket science and just might save you life someday. should it be required to jump without an AAD?
mjosparky replied to shermanator's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I don’t know about Eloy but that is the law at Perris. If your AAD fires and you are not disabled in some way you fucked up. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
In the US it can be done by the manufacture where a rigger ticket is not needed. In most cases it will be done quicker and with less cost. And just to keep facts straight, riggermick at one time was a “manufacture” of harness/container systems. He got his “Master” riggers ticket while you were still in grade school. I would think this gives his the latitude to question your rigging knowledge and advice. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Not so fast, they did a 300 way out of Twin otters and a King Air, in Arizona a few years back....... Hell, all they have to do is come up with 10 more otters or 20 more King Airs. Piece of cake. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
