  1. It would be hard to explain. While other may have, I made no reference to your jump numbers or you time in the sport. You must be reading a different thread than I am. No one has questioned you status as a “skydiver”. And you are to be commended for not posting anonymously. I have always considered it a cowardly way to do things. Then you would be able to quote the break even cost of putting up one tandem at a C-182 DZ? Of course this quote would include all related costs from A/C fuel to toilet paper. You did not name any one person or business but say than any DZ that charges $300 for a tandem is a rip-off. As for style.............................. 2. When you find yourself in a hole the first thing you should do is stop digging. Do you have any idea what is a fair market price for a tandem in different parts of the country and using different aircraft? While you are entitled to your opinion it should have some basis in fact before you start slamming what others do. And yes with your style maybe you should stay in “bonfire”. 3. Scientific research shows that it takes the human brain 0.7 seconds to perceive any danger and react accordingly, regardless of background and training. The times I used are a SWAG. Scientific research is usually done under controlled conditions with the tested knowing what to expect. That is not the case when you are down and dirty. The bottom line is if you are going through 1,000 feet with nothing out, Shame on you. Sparky Then you have those that are just living right. http://s397.photobucket.com/albums/pp55/mjosparky/low%20pull/ My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  4. What I heard and it is strictly info from the rumor mill is that 750 feet was chosen because at the altitude at terminal it is too late for the any action by the jumper to make a difference. It is more like: 1. Realize there is a problem – 1 to 1.5 sec 2. Come up with a plan of action – 1 sec (and that is generous) 3. Put that plan in effect – 1 to 1.5 sec 4. That leaves you with less than 2 sec. not enough time for the reserve to deploy. (kkeenan you have been around long enough to remember “line stretch on impact”) 5. And kiss your ass good bye. 6. To my knowledge (30 years as a firefighter & 25+ as a test jumper) a building escape canopy has never been tested/used under actual conditions. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  7. Massive thermals? Visibility? Fire? Probably the same reason that these building escape systems won't work too well when the building is actually on fire. No more calls, we have a winner. The thermal activity in the canyons created by high rise buildings on fire gets so bad that it causes ¾” tempered glass panels to fly up. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  8. Has anyone ever wondered why they don’t just fly helicopters to the roof and pick up all these people? I think the best canopy for this type of suicide would be a modified cross-form. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  10. It is all the "bla bla" that will end up killing you. If you want to be a skydiver take the time to learn what you need to know. As for the "X-Lander", but a real altimeter not a toy. There is no cool factor at 2,000 feet. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  11. You are lying about your lic. number so you are probably lying about the rest of your dribble. Scott take you shit and get a life. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  12. I with Jim on this issue. People keep saying it has been done for years in other countries around the world. Can someone give specifics as to time and place where jumper exited at 1000 feet or lower on a demo? The only one I have heard of the guy bounced and that was in the US. 16. From this thread it seems very clear that the average skydiver needs to learn a great deal more about how gear works. It is not rocket science and takes very little time. But that time spent may save your life. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  17. As I have said before. A drop zone is an adult’s playground. It is not a day care center or a pet motel. It is not the place to take kids or dogs period. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  22. There are probably less than 20 canopy pilots in the world that could tell the difference between “Low drag risers” and the standard Type 17 risers. They appear to be regular riser folded over and stitched down. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  23. In other words, with the brakes stowed the reserve will be going no faster than you would after stepping off a second story roof (20 feet). While usually not enough to kill people that's not going to be pleasant. You are dealing with decent rate and forward speed. That makes it better than flying at full glide or coming straight down. You are right is not pleasant but if you end up that situation you are not sports jumping; you are trying to save your life. And it helps if you jump a reserve that is built for your body weight. Hell, cheepos would come down at around 24 fps and we could sometimes stand them up. Of course I was 40 pounds lighter and 30 year younger. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  25. TSO testing require they meet this standard. Sparky AS8015B 4.3.7 Rate of Descent Tests, All Types: There shall be not less than 6 drops, with an individual and/or dummy in each harness weighing not less than the maximum operating weight4. The average rate of descent shall not exceed 24 ft/s (7.3 m/s), and the total velocity shall not exceed 36 ft/s (11.0 m/s), in an unaltered post deployment configuration, corrected to standard sea level altitude conditions. The rate of descent measurement shall be taken over a minimum interval of 100 ft (30.5 m). These tests may be combined with other tests in this section. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
