Surely it is riskier for a tandem to exit at 5k than an AFF student? Also isn't it riskier for a tandem to have an off landing than a student? Where did it say skydiving was anything but risky? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Airshow / Demo Jumpers - RECENT info needed

I think it has a lot to do with the FIDO you are dealing with. When I was active I had it go both ways so I was always prepared to file a 7711. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. No, it is not debatable. One should have stayed or both students should have gone. This procedure was established probably before you were born and for good reasons. The safety and survivability of all involved. 2. Yes, you are not qualified to say stay or go for either the students or the instructors. You are being loyal to your DZ and instructors and loyalty is always commendable. But you are just parroting what you have heard others say. 3. What do you base “I think the right decision was made.”? Do you have any idea what the useful load of a King Air 90 is? At the time of the engine how much fuel was on board? Do you know what the published rate of climb is for a King Air 90? I am not trying to flame you but to show you that really have not opinion in this matter. You know what to opinion of other might be but you do not know why. 4. A King Air 90 has a Gross weight of 9650 lbs., an empty weight of 5600 lbs. leaving a useful load of 4050 lbs. The 9 souls and the pilot onboard would come to around 2100 lbs. leaving 1950 lbs. of useful load. Required fuel for the flight would come to just under 500 lbs. for a 1450 useful load. So the plane was not even close to being over weight even for a single engine. It published single engine climb rate is 500 fpm which is faster than the planed many of us learned to jump out of. In conclusion, with this information, which the pilot should have had at his finger tips and the instructors should have at least a passing knowledge of; do you still think the right decision was made? We all make mistakes but when you take on a leadership role in any aviation related activity your mistakes can cost someone else their life. Disclaimer: All of the above is my personal opinion. I am not an instructor but I am a pilot. I have also spent many hours in that aircraft from 200 mph at 500 ft. to 180 mph at 30,000 ft. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

It has been my experience that effective “rules of engagement” consist of fire superiority. Simply put that means you put more bullets in the air in a shorter period of time than the bad guys and there is a good chance you will win. And we all know that the winner gets to set the rules. This thing seems to have turned into a search for a justifiable reason to abandon a student. I guess attitudes have changed over the years on the care and feeding of students. It sounds like instructors get to be “responsible” for the student only when it’s convenient. They were at 5,000 AGL and 6 miles from the DZ. There was more then enough time and altitude to either fly back and land with all aboard or fly back and let everyone out. (yes I am a pilot) I have over 500 jumps out of that particular King Air and unless it has changed a great deal in the last few years it will fly at 90 to 100 MPH and climb on one engine. I have been in it when it flew more than 15 miles to land with what I consider more serious damage than a blow engine. (see attachments) Leaving unsupervised 2 students in the aircraft is not only shirking the responsibility you are getting paid for but you left the pilot with a time bomb. Shame on you. Pencil Packers..Something to think about
mjosparky replied to riggergreg's topic in Gear and Rigging
It was a carry over from the military which required both pockets. NATIONAL AIRCRAFT STANDARDS COMMITTEE NAS 804 4.2.2 Inspection Data Pocket: Each parachute outfit shall be provided with an inner and an outer pocket for keeping a record card containing space for recording the date of repacking or repair and the rigger’s name and serial number. The inner pocket shall be located in the center of the packed container, tray or frame and the outer pocket placed externally in an easily accessible position. If the inner record card can be read from the outside of the pack because of the use of transparent materials, only the inner pocket need be provided. Skydiving has lost one of the pioneers of the sport. Gary Douris passed away today after an extended battle with cancer. Gary was a skydiver, ATP, JM, Instructor, master rigger and manufacture. He managed the legendary Elsinore DZ during the 60’s and 70’s. He was a Marine for 12 years and during 2 tours in Viet Nam was awarded the Sliver Star, the Bronze Star with Combat “V” and 2 purple hearts. The lights that once burned so bright keep flickering out. Sad. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

And that my friend is a large part of why I hung up jumping 3 years ago. The “entitlement generation” has taken the fun out of just being at the drop zone. Sad. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Things were a lot tougher 30 years ago. The gear was heavy, did not fit in most cases and often did not work as advertised. You really had to want to skydive to stick with it. It was not a case of “black humor” it was just the way it was. So how many miss the "good old days"? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
