I think 4 and 5 were effectively out of the question because by the time they got to 4, the plane would have already been a part of the Pentagon. That's just me though. I think you're reaching with the 5 minutes thing, Bill. Let's suppose though that they had shot the plane down. What would have been the impact? Remember, we've got a determined pilot heading for a population center. How many dead Americans? How many dead civilians? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Apparently so. But I haven't jumped in a month or so, so cut me some slack. We should have used nuclear weapons against.... who? You're right, it's been shown... Unfortunately it was shown after the fact. Had the F15s intercepted the last plane, what do you suggest that they should have done? In this case, yes. I think that in the grand scheme of things, that the 5 minutes the President took did not significantly change the outcome on September 11th, 2001. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. Aren't we more likely to get the tort reform you're looking for if we start out small? I realize that an entire industry isn't small, but you know what I'm getting at. Couldn't a bill like this one be used to set precident in other, non fast-food related cases? If you're asking for all or nothing, I fear you'll get nothing. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

To everyone who's caught up in this 5 minutes thing, come on! In the grand scheme of things, what's the problem with sitting for 5 minutes, taking in the moment (dealing with the shock). Put yourself in the President's shoes - what would YOU have done in 5 minutes? What was lost in the 5 minutes that he sat there? This isn't a Republican thing, it isn't a Democrat thing, it's a human thing. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

How much emphasis on canopy control?
Jimbo replied to Jarcie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Not nearly enough. That's for sure. The good news is that canopy control courses are becoming more and more popular. As experienced canopy pilots see more and more people flocking to Scott Miller, Team Extreme, Flight 1, etc... they'll realize that there's money to be made and get in the game. Give it 5 years, canopy control courses will be everywhere and it'll be "cool" to have taken at least one. Before anyone jumps on me ... It's a shame that it will take the lure of $$$ to bring the qualified coaches out of the woodwork, but I do believe that that will be the great motivator for people to get in the game. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. Given your weight, elevation, and most importantly, your 'newbie' status, I would strongly consider a 190, or even staying with the 210. Good luck. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

When did you first try out an elliptical canopy?
Jimbo replied to jkwon's topic in Safety and Training
Keep looking, someone out there has a rig for sale that will fit you and contains the proper equipment. To answer your question - at about 200 jumps or so I put around 20 jumps on a Cobalt 170. I kept my Safire for another 250 jumps after that. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed. -
What Lisa said is dead on. It's a good first rig, you'll get a lot of mileage out of it. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Spoken like a true democrat. Bill's statement has nothing to do with politics, and everything to do with people. We like what makes our lives easier, and more convenient. A lot of the new technology with potential for abuse by BB does just that. MOST people in the US would gladly trade a big scoop of privacy for a little extra convenience. That's hardly political. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

It was more of a volume issue when connected to a BOSE Wave radio. The radio had to be cranked to around 70 to get much sound in a small office. That same radio, if cranked to 70 or so playing a CD would have been heard by the entire floor. Does that make sense? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Exactly. Chop off the front, and put the lights in front, instead of those rolling things and you've got yourself something that loooks a lot like a Mustang. Quade, looking at the other page you provided, I recognize quite a few of those cars. I was just flipping through the Consumer Reports 2004 car guide, so they're fresh in my mind. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

No Quade, I'm looking for the term "concept". If you're going to pick nits, it's true that MOST concept cars don't make it to production, but the technology debuted in the cars often does, and often in cars that LOOK quite similar to the concept cars presented at the auto-shows, but this thread isn't so much about looks as it is about technology. Your statement that concept cars "ain't never gonna happen" is inaccurate and short sighted. I'm done arguing this. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

I said that every car was a concept car at one time, not that every concept car made it to production. Do you understand the difference? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Chuck - and others who have XM - how's the line out on the receiver? I've observed only one XM radio receiver and the line out voltage/volume was horrid. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Until you've got a slew of 64bit apps, the 64bit CPU won't be a much benefit to you. Does AMD do a 3000+/3200+/3400+ in a 32bit version? That might be a bit more affordable. For what it's worth, I've used AMD CPUs since the days of the 486 and never had a problem. They're less expensive than their Intel counterparts and perform (in my experience) just as well if not better. As far as video editing is concerned, if you're really looking for raw speed, then a dual CPU system, as much RAM as you can afford, a slew of FAST disk, and a multithreaded video editing program is the way to go. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. Should your average beat-cop be allowed to posess a gun in a shopping mall, church, or movie theatre? Just one test at 16? Or maybe one test for each category of weapon? Then no more government interference? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed. -
This forum's guidelines are getting fuzzy...
Jimbo replied to BigM's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I don't know, is that related to the "physical act of skydiving"? Or does that belong in S&T? Again, that sounds like a S&T topic to me. So what exactly does belong in this forum? Edit: I agree with Tom, this should probably be moved to the Suggestions and Feedback forum. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed. -
Apparently I'm more lucky than you, but I assure you that I'm telling the truth and resent the fact that you suggest I am not. I've never seen anyone scraped up from being dragged across the tarmac - I did see someone scraped up because he made a low turn INTO the tarmac, but that had nothing to do with being dragged by the wind. Dave, because your experiences have been different than mine and Ron's doesn't make us liars (as you have suggested in your replies to both of us), it just makes us different. Different training maybe? Who knows. But liars, no way. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

I disagree with this statement. If you had said Undoing your RSL is a reasonable step to take to prevent your reserve from firing, I'd agree with you. However, it's unlikely that a ground wind will get your reserve pilot chute and extract and inflate the reserve. That's going to take -a lot- of wind. I just don't think it's a good idea to be fumbling with safety equipment simply to prevent yourself from being dragged. Time spent fumbling with the RSL is time that could be spent walking towards the canopy or reeling in a brake line. Fumbling with the RSL before you're on the ground, well that just seems wrong to me. I've jumped on some pretty windy days and have never had a lot of trouble controlling the canopy, nothing a few steps forward can't fix. Maybe I'm lucky. As to the issue of tandems, I jump at a pretty busy DZ and have seen tandems go up in some pretty strong winds (winds I wouldn't jump in), and have never seen a chop due to winds. That doesn't mean it hasn't happened, simply that I've never seen it. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Getting only the negatives developed is significantly cheaper than having them printed. I -think- that negatives can be scanned on a normal flatbed, not the best quality there, but it should give you an idea of how you're progressing. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. I've never understood this advice. It's better, in my opinion, to learn how to control your canopy than it is to disengage a piece of safety equipment in the field (or in the air). Walk towards the canopy (it won't inflate if it doesn't have an anchor), reel in a brake line, anything. If it's so windy that the standard tricks don't work, you probably shouldn't be jumping. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Democrats bite their own noses to spite their faces

I'm sorry, did you have something constructive to say? I must have missed it. To those who will pop in and make comments like Jeanne's, I suggest that if people didn't enjoy discussing it, that the thread would die. Apparently, due to the large number of posts in this particular thread, people _DO_ want to continue the discussion. Why would you begrudge them that privilege? If you're not interested in the subject matter, don't read it. If you have nothing constructive to add, then don't. This thread, for the most part, has remained civil; let's keep it that way. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
