Flying high Senior sky divers looking to break records this weekend 11:48 PM PDT on Friday, October 15, 2004 By ROCKY SALMON / The Press-Enterprise LAKE ELSINORE - The skies over Lake Elsinore will be full of history this weekend. A former Olympian, two World War II pilots, a U2 spy plane pilot, a former national sky-diving champion and world record holders are all taking part in Skydivers Over Sixty's attempt to break a record. Last year the club set the record with 30 sky divers over the age of 60 diving in formation at Skydive Elsinore. "No matter what happens for the rest of my life I can always say I held a world record," said George White, 65, of Carmel. "It's a great, great, great pleasure and a treat to be in the same sky with these guys." Sky divers from around the world showed up to sail through the air Friday. They took to the sky in two DeHavilland Twin Otter planes in two swarms. The first group was filled with more experienced divers, said organizer Joe Wasser. The club will try to break the record at first with 32 sky divers in the first group. If they meet that number, sky divers from the second group will be added to the first group, Wasser said. The target is 50. The first jump of the day was not successful and put a scare into sky divers as one man had to cut away his parachute and open the reserve. "I opened up and saw he was in a tight spin," said Larry Elmore, 63, who was above the man on the first jump. "He didn't fool around and cut the chute away." Elmore has flown from Florida to Lake Elsinore for the past five years to participate in the club's record-setting attempts. "The first reason I come for is the camaraderie," said Elmore, who took part in a world record jump of 357 sky divers in formation in Thailand last January. "These are a fun group of guys and it's not an ego thing." Minutes after the first group landed, a few sky divers went into a trailer to watch the jump on tape. As the dark lake loomed and motorcycles raced around a track far below, the sky divers seemed to swim toward each other and began linking hands. But a few divers went to the wrong spot and the formation was not completed. Sky divers opened their parachutes creating a sea of red, blue, and green that seemingly glittered in the sky. Spectators could hear the rustling of the parachutes as the sky divers approached the landing zone. White said the first jump went better than he thought it would. "Not bad at all," said the former Air Force airman who started a parachute club at Fort Irwin in the 1950s. A few minutes after repacking his parachute, Jerry Bourquin talked to other members about the jump. The 71-year-old Murrieta man is well known in the club because he was one of the first Army Golden Knights. The knights are a special Army parachute unit. "It's a personal pride for everyone to hold this record," he said. "But it's not just about jumping, it's about talking with people on the ground. You hear the greatest stories." Bourquin then shouted out to the first group to meet up at the trailer to talk over the video. They were scheduled for another jump in 15 minutes. I just finished listening to a broadcast on KFI radio. They were interviewing this camera guru and grilling him on digital cameras. Interesting stuff. A skydiving cameraflyer named Mark called in and started asking questions. Wonder who this Mark is....he charges a little more for his work, then gives the digital full res pictures to his client so he doesn't have to fuss with all the printing hassle. Anyway, that was off topic a bit.... What Mark did ask was what was a good lens for him to use in freefall. The guru recommended an Olympus lens! (cause it was weather proof and hardy in its make-up). I wanted to call in right then and ask about compatibility with the cameras we all like to use! Canon, for instance. But the show was already winding up it's hour segment. It's very important to -know- your lens is compatible with your camera 100%. And in the modes you like to use it in. It's good that we share information here, so we all can learn. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

Ah, man....! We wanted pictures with the story! (they didn't say anything about the smoke, either....) Think we'll hear (see) more of him in the future? ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon -
(19345) (1 year in the sport) (A 2147483647). Curious. How many jumps to you -really- have? In my short 8 years in the sport I've gone through many cycles of discovery. I've found that when something new is being learned then I can't wait to get to the DZ. We all like the feeling of discovery. When that has been satisfied, then we move on. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

If I want to know the weather in store for CA, all I have to do is look what is blowing through my parent's state of WA. http://www.weatherunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=92399 Thanks for the warning. I HATE cold weather. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

I had an elderly patient who had severe arthritis and multiple points of pain and debility from this. Yet she strived to continue moving on. Her comment to me was priceless. She remarked, "If I get to the end of my life and haven't used up all my parts, then I haven't lived!" Thank you, Carmel. You made me rethink the way we live. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

Incorrect. On-line, the Personal Registration Form (PRF) did not include these questions. And the PRF was the only information that was required to be filled out. The Biography included these questions, and if you look at the team profiles, for example this one, over 50% did not fill out their bios. I, myself, filled one out just for shits and giggles....I wanted to read others and thus thought I should fill mine out as well. Cheers, ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

In my experience it used to be mono but now is stereo. Just for confirmation, when you order make sure they send you a stereo plug. The mono won't work on the digital cameras but work fine for the 'older' 35mm film cameras. I have both. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

Thank you, Steve. My team worked very hard this season, starting way back last November in formulating their training schedule and goals. We made about 300 skydives together as a complete team but then unfortunately lost our very talented tail flyer, Piya, to an unexpected job loss situation just two months before Nationals. We kept training, as a 3-way with coaching for 2 months and only the 4 days before Nationals did we add our final tail to our squad. About 20 jumps of training, then Nationals. I've watched from above as Exceed trained over the season. Saw them rise from an 11 point average at the start of the season, and every SSL they attended saw the average rise. They say it takes about 100 jumps per point rise. We made almost 400 jumps together total, with incredible coaching from B.C., Kirkby and McGowen (Pat, not Mike). I'm extremely proud of my team members, Baat, Alan, and Christy, their talent...their focus....their determination....their honesty...their giving spirit. I'd be with them again in a heartbeat. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

Oh, you'd be surprised over what some people have come up with (before knowing what it -really- means). I have it as my car's license plate as well. One soul took it as 'lost diver'! ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

I thought I saw somewhere they're making a new Superman movie. It will suck. Chris Reeve will always be Superman to me. R.I.P. --Art Ironic. I just bought his Superman 4 movie DVD collection last month and watched them all before Nationals. Premonition? ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

Yeah, it is a very good read. :^) Who'd have thunk an 'evil' rock-in-roll band would have deep thoughts.
