What not to do (how the Aggie almost died)
Ron replied to AggieDave's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Get real...If it goes, and if you have had one go on you you know what I am talking about, get rid of it. You can fight it...at what cost? Being to low? In a bad place? Now you are screwed... Ask my opinion, If it puts you on your back....Get rid of the damn thing pronto. You have to much to lose trying to save it. Very few times have I ever gotten out of spinning twists....Like maybe twice. But make your own choices....I will tell you that if it is spun up, and starts to spin....get rid of it. What not to do (how the Aggie almost died)
Ron replied to AggieDave's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have NO "hard deck". I have cut away high(like as soon as I went...nope can't land it).....and WAY low (like 600 feet when my cut away handle was tucked under my harness on exit) And yes I have the video of that one. Was not able to land it....so it had to go. I had to take off my gloves to get the handle but it still was unsafe to land, so it went. My last cut away was line twist under a Velocity 96. It was not spinning, and I was kicking out of the twists....But, I was at 1,200 feet, and over the industrial park at DeLand. My point here is, that I might have been able to kick out (Or it might have dove) But I didn't have a good place to land a 2 to 1 loaded Velocity. So I chopped it to land my PD113 in a TIGHT area. (Thanks PRO rating). So he might not need to re-look at his altitudes...but REALLY look at why he went right past them. Cutting away at 600 feet (with a gun slinger reserve pull) is better than landing a "I'm gonna die" Mal. So, Aggie WHY did you fly right past your 1500 foot hard deck? Answer: "I lost altitude awarness trying to fix a cannopy that looked like I could fix it." "I was so wrapped up in fixing the canopy above me that I almost died." "Man did I screw the pooch on that one." This happens A LOT...People get put into a situation that they think they can fix....And they try to fix it way past the "hard deck". I don't honestly have a "hard deck"...I look up and see something that I can either: A) Land with out dying. B) Try to fix for a few seconds. C) get rid of. "A" happens most of the time. "C" happens a few times. "B" is what kills you. I have a standard policy. As soon as line twist starts to dive....It's gone PERIOD.....There is no "I can fix it"...Get rid of it as soon as you are on your back watching the world spin by your feet. I am willing to bet that this will be his new policy.... Question Aggie: How many cut aways do you have? Any? I have found that most people who try to fix mains have not yet had to pull the silver handle....So when shit hits the fan, they don't think anything other than FIX (or Deploy) MY MAIN!!!!! Glad you are not dead. Whats the lesson here? KNOW YOUR ALTITUDE!!!!!! Think about what would have happend if you had pulled at 2,500....How about 2 grand.....????? With any canopy there comes a time to say goodbye to it. I had a good friend die due to a stuck toggle and a wing suit. He managed to cut away at 50 feet. If you have a canopy in a dive....think fast you are loosing A LOT of altitude. Like I said...glad you are not dead, and I bet this will not happen again. Dear DR. You never responded to my post about you maybe being smarter than GB.....But not having the same information as GB....And so not being as qualified as him to make these calls. Does this mean I win this one? Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

OK...well.....Damn......ah.....I think..no.....Uh...... Damn he may have this one. But John, you have to admit that you do not have the intel that GB does? You may be a smart guy...OK you ARE a smart guy...But if you don't have access to the knowledge, who is better to make a choice, the guy with the PHD that gets his info from the news, or they guy with ALL the info of the CIA, FBI, Military, And all the other alphabet groups in the WORLD....some of which you have to have a Secret clearance to even know about? I go with the guy with the G2, not just the IQ. Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

You still never answer any of the questions I asked to you. You think we should have just left saddam alone to build a large stock of WMD and maybe become Nuclear? Ignore the fact that he supports terrorist activities? Ignore that he has been acting in defiance of UN resolutions? Ignore that he has used tourture and an iron fist on his own people? Ignore that fact that he HAS USED WMD before? Look I think that the U.S. has opened a large bag of shit...This is a holy war to them. They are raised to think that the best way to die is in a jihad, with the blood of an enemy on your hands. It is tha way they are raised.... But in truth...Christains started this...9/11 was just an extension of the Christans/Islam agression. Anyone care to think about the crusaides? We walked up to them and to quote George Carlin. "you believe in God? You do????...Well, do you believe in MY God?" Bin Ladin told Saudi's not to let us on their soil...we would never leave..... Guess what??? We never did! Do I think that someone (I would have prefered the UN to not be so damn spinless and prove they are an empty group with no power) should step up and crush SH....Yep, it needs to be done. But in no way can we win this war....MANY people see this as an attack on ISLAM....Not Saddam....So now we will have extreme groups doing more terror acts. They were going to do them anyway, but now they will happen sooner. It is not a holy war to the US...But it is to MANY others. We are seen as a giant using its power to destroy the things we don't like....We are being bullies on the playground. Sometimes you have to be. SH cannot be allowed to have WMD, and finance terror. But we are in deep now. But like I said you still did not answer my questions. Is it because the only answers you have are insults? Answer my questions. Shit happens....If Saddam wanted to, he could have left...AND NOT ONE PERSON WOULD HAVE DIED... If he wanted to...he could have complied with the UN resolutions...AND NOT ONE PERSON WOULD HAVE DIED... Civilians sometimes die in WAR.....But cry babies always wine about them.... Sometimes it happens....It's called WAR. Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

Manbird posted this in Incidents: Whuffos often comment on how active all these skydivers seem. Personally, I find their inactivity strange. It really doesn't surprise me when I find that a fellow jump, in addition to hundreds or thousands of jumps, has decades of martial arts experience or thousands of SCUBA dives or is a kickass skier or goes on climbing expeditions, etc. But it confuses or saddens me to hear that outside of this tandem, someone would just sit on their ass at home or sit on their ass at a bar, and that's it. There's nothing wrong with sitting on your ass at home or a bar, but that should be like no more than 10% of your freetime. Which leads me to this........ I live on the Dz in Zhills....I have a few jumps over almost 10 years. There are times I want to get the F>CK off the DZ and have a "real life"....The problem is I have been jumping so long now, and most (if not all) of my friends are jumpers. Yes we as a group sometimes go bowling, or out to eat ect...But I know many people who have quit the sport due to kids, jobs ect.....My question is...What the hell do they do on a nice day? I have TRIED to not be at the DZ on a nice day, but I really can't think of anything that can hold my interest like jumping does.... What do the wuffos do on a day like today???? 1. The pilot arrives, jumps out of his car goes directly to the airplane, and without a pre-flight, starts it up and tells everyone to get in? 2. You know that the pilot bail-out rig being used in the aircraft is out of date? 3. Your friend's reserve is out of date 4. One evening you witness the DZO forging a 100-hour inspection in the jump-ship's logbook? 5. The pilot tells you the DZO has disconnected the tachometer 6. You become aware that the pilot's medical has expired and they are still flying jumpers? The battery in the aircraft is bad OK I am tired of this.... No, you are paranoid.....But hey its your rig. Why should we care if you want to add stuff that does not make it unsafe.....A little over the top, but what the hell... If the ring breaks, most likley the type 8 will pop as well, and you would not survive the whack anyway! Type 8 is rated at what 3800-4000 pounds? And I have played with the pull machine at RWS, and almost ALL the materials stressed much higher than rated. But like I said...Do what ya want....its not unsafe, just overkill. 32 on T-10's They are not as bad as people say...I have had some SOFT landings.... "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334 -
This was a question about what to do if you are cut.... It happens, and will happen for as long as people jump. I will not put someone on a load that it is bad or dangerous for the group. Groups differ, mistakes differ. Cuts will happen....They are not done just because..they are done for the good of the group. It does not mean that that person is never going to be welcomed back..It could just be they had a bad day, or still have some learning to do. If you get cut....Don't worry it has happened to EVERYONE. Organizers should do it quietly, and explain why...and offer sugestions to fix that problem..not all do, and that is a shame. Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

Well I didn't miss a load....The organizer put me back on as soon as one of the others organizers told him what happened... No big deal... I solved this problem by not doing big ways anymore I don't like them. I got invited to the 300 way, but that is not MY idea of fun. I would rather spend that time/money doing 4way or tunnel. BTW Jerm....I have 4 hrs of tunnel the next 2 weeks. Hows that for tunnel whore? Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

Well I was cut from 2 loads, and not let on several. I got cut from a 110 way for being late to the dirt dive. (We had t bring rigs, and my packer was not done). I got cut from a load by a guy that I cut from a load 2 years before...Man he held a grudge...Oh well we are good friends now. I have been cut, and I have cut people. I will jump with anyone, but I have to think of the good of the group. If no one cares about the jump, I will let anyone on as long as it is still safe. But in a 20 way you have 19 other jumpers to think about. It is not fair to have one person who is unsafe, or just not at the same level as the others in the group holding the group back. I will not put people in way over their heads. Its dangerous, and bad for the group, and the person. The last load I was cut from WAS a freefly jump....They can be just as "cutty" as RW folks. Good jumpers sometimes want to do good jumps. You will feel the same way someday. It does not mean that they don't want to jump with you, they want to feel pushed as well. ALL JUMPERS WANT TO FEEL PUSHED AT SOME TIME....That means that we ALL want to jump with people better than us sometimes....Just like you. But it does not always happen. So, at times we have to "cut" to push the group. Its nothing personal.....And I am sure that if you do get cut that they will welcome you back later. Don't sweat it....I know it sucks, but EVERYONE has been cut. Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

Well, we should look at this, and not bicker about what canopy is on what list. I think it should be done jump # to wingload just like Brian G says. TYPE of canopy does matter, but less I think than WINGLOAD. SIZE being a function that effects WINGLOAD. So I would have rules to govern wingload. It would be the first, and easiest step. well I would think that HP eliptical would be easy to define. Stiletto, Xfire, Cobalt, ect. Semi Elipticals like Sabre 2 would not fall in that. Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
