  2. Well I have done it...and showed it to you...and you ignored it. But hey you don't like the rules at that DZ...Don't jump there. They have the right to have whatever rules they want. Ron Im done here, just like the last time you don't listen "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  3. Depends on the canopy....I can bring a StarTrac I straight down in no winds. Same could be said for a student canopy. Brakes can be used very well as long as you said you let the canopy fly before the flair... But turning can increase speed, which is very bad. I would say above 500 feet...and after checking for traffic, S-turns are good...After that brakes are better. 4. yes, but at 1000 feet you could take a delay after cutting away...I would not suggest you do it, but you could. He is putting more power in a device than he should... He said with an RSL he would cut away lower than without... Whats the difference??? Nothing, you can pull the silver handle even before the cutaway if you wish...(Canopy transfer, used to be done a lot before high wingloads mad faster mals). 5. You and I have been down this road before.... You need to look at the incident reports...Most are under 500 jumps with 1.5 wingload...And most were trying to get their swoop on. Some not, and some had more than 500 jumps, some had a higher wingload, some lower, but read the reports. 1.5 wingload = dead jumpers. It really is simple math. I don't blame them for wanting to limit the exposure that they face. And more is comming. When to many pilots killed themselves in high performance aircraft he FAA came in and made a checkout....When too many people ground looped tail draggers...FAA came in with an endorsment... It is comming FAA, USPA, DZO's....its comming. We have shown that we do a very bad job of controlling ourselves. And your gun control argument is flawed....You don't HAVE to own a gun...And that is what the liberals are fighting..They want to BAN them...You have to have a canopy to skydive...It does not have to be a pocket rocket. They are trying to limit risk based on wingload which evidence has proven to be a factor in accidents and deaths. 6. Why would an RSL make a difference? It should not. Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  7. Well, I have to add my input...Ianmdrennan I am replying to you to let you know that.... Is probley THE best way I have seen of cutting to the point. I like it. Now...As long as people think THEY are the best canopy pilot in the world, and can handle a tiny canopy/high wingload...You will see more of this.. Also, it is the right of the owner to do what he wants..I support them. I think that 1.5 is a little low, but hey most people who die in this sport under canopy have less than 500 jumps with a 1.5 wingload....So it seems they have a good reason for that rule. I like Brian Germains table. 100 jumps 1.1 200 1.2 300 1.3 400 1.4 And if I owned a DZ it WOULD BE A RULE. If you didn't like it...Sorry. More of this is comming. Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  8. I have cut a way at 700 feet....Long story on why I was so low, but it was needed, I would not have survived the landing... Think about it...The CYPRES (which some people appear to depend on) fires at 750 feet. Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  9. Yeah, I said the same thing...I was never gonna hook turn either. This guy had a good point....But you just did a TANDEM...and you are making choices on what you will do for the rest of your jumping career??????? You don't have a clue yet. Wait a little before you start to post things so strongly....You will be made to look stupid if you do this. Ambivalence

Not trying to be a jackass here.....BUT, You have been on this group for some time....You like talking to skydivers....you like being around skydivers...You have done more than one tandem... Guess what? You ARE A SKYDIVER...... You have issues with you confidence....Well quess what? There is one sure way to fix that.. GET OUT AND SKYDIVE!!!!! NOW!!!!! Take charge of your life NOW!!!!!! What are you waiting for????? Courage is not simply one of the virtues but the form of EVERY virtue at the testing point. -C.S. Lewis To find in ourselves what makes life worth living is risky business, for it means that once we know we MUST SEEK IT. It also means that without it life will be valueless. -Marsha Sinetar So you didn't get out on your AFF. Fall seven times, stand up eight. -Japanese Proverb. And my last one...the one that will piss people off at me... I will have nothing to do with one who blows hot and cold with the same breath. -Aesop Either go and do it...or quit talking about it. Decide if you are going to be a passenger in your life, or a driver. If you are not going to take charge, and control your life...Don't talk about where you want it to go to me....If you are not willing to do SOMETHING to get where you want to go...I don't want to hear anyone cry about not getting to where they want to be. DO AFF...NOW....Or stop...Admit that jumping is not for you, and move on with your life. Nothing wrong with that really....Only thing wrong is to deny what you want do to fear. The worst thing is you die....I would rather die than not live. I hope you took this the right way. 11. Well...ever heard of luck? Like pulling a reserve under a spinning Velocity before cutting away and not getting killed? Some people get lucky....Some catch on quicker....Some get Fucked up. I don't think that anyone that screwed up under canopy, thought they were gonna screw up and get hurt...Just like I don't think that anyone that bounced (other than suicides) woke up that day and said "Hey, today is a good day to get killed!" And I bet that everyone that hooked in a got hurt/killed all thought that THEY were not gonna do it. THEY were different than the OTHERS. So if allow anyone to follow whatever they want, you will have people getting fucked up and killed.... If you spoon feed them what they can handle, when they can handle it...They have a much greater chance of success...(For the sake of argument we will define "Success" as Not getting seroiusly hurt or killed). But hey thats just my little opinion...what do I know? Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  12. Well did the guy start to date your girlfriend? In not, then I doubt you had a reason to try and kill him...So I am betting you didn't try to give him a Mal. You see, sometimes these things we use (called parchutes....I think its French...something about "Protect from Fall"?) sometimes just don't open right. This is why we have the cool 3 ring design, and handles to get rid of them....Now just cutting away is a bad idea, so they put another parachute in the same rig...That way, if you were trying to kill him, he had 2 chances. (I mean, what is the chances that he dated YOUR ex, and his riggers???? I mean if he did, he is just STUPID). So if he is not dead/mad/missing a main...ect...Oh well buy him a beer and go on with your life. If he IS seeing your Wife/Girlfriend/ect....Well to get rid of him, you need to pack his main, AND have a riggers ticket. Jeeze newbies!!!!! Smile...Life goes on. 13. I have to say that was one of the better written "Oh Shit" stories I have yet to read...I have heard a few ones that were better, and told a few that were close, but this one wins. And the best part is that it has a good moral.....DON'T GET KILLED LOOKING COOL/CAUSE IT WAS CHEAP. If you live through the canopy you have now, you can go smaller later. I think that DZ's should have stories like his on file, along with copies of medical bills and Xrays....When some guy shows up with a canopy too small...He should have to read all of them, and look at all the pictures. There was a time when people at the DZ really cared about low timers, and would say when they saw a bad thing gonna happen.....I had several people say they would kill me if they saw me ever pull low again. (fiqure that one out?) And back then the low timers would listen...Insted of thinking that the old guys were just there to rain on their parade. Oh well..... I would have nominated this person for a DARWIN award. Anybody heard of a pincheck? If you are going to do something like this.....Think rigger, and use a flag that looks really stupid unless removed. Better yet, ITS A F%^&*ING MAIN!!!!!! Who cares if it gets opened? Just repack it. 15. And I only have one point.... All 239 were also have been fine if they pulled the silver handle before a cool toy did it for them. Most of these were people that just flat out screwed up. Only 3 I think were collisions. Most of the flat out screwed up, were people that were low timers. You could also save lives with RSL's....And even more lives would be saved if everyone had to jump a Manta...Even more if you banned skydiving completely. AAD....If you want one, and can afford to have one....Get one. NEVER trust the damn thing, and ALWAYS rely on your mind and hands to save your own butt. If you have one fire because you flipped out...think about if this sport is for you...you are dead. If I owned a DZ, and you had an AAD fire. I might not let you jump at my DZ again. 16. I had an 88 FX in my XRS with a 113 and CYPRES...I didn't have a problem with it. Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  17. I just think that a large portion of the sport has been lulled into a false sense of security about the gear we currently use. Kind of that whole "it can't happen to me, I've got a new and that's the latest advancement in the market!" Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  18. Not that it does not add to a resume.... But Steve Lapp one of the best LO's I know does not have any type of rating. I don't think it is needed. Boxman didn't have ANY type of rating when he started. Most LO's I think really don't have a rating of anytype. But you can look for what you want if you are in charge. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  19. Five S/L's One 5 second delay One 10 second delay a 2 way from 7,500. an 8way from 12,500. This was 1992. Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  20. I agree with Chuck.....A guy with 1000 jumps in a year may not be the rounded person you need to be a good LO. Of course a guy that has 2,000 4way only jumps is not a good choice either. Or a guy with with 10,000 jumps that still jumps a round main. A good LO can look at the group, and the experience level of the group and come up with a dive that is successful. A good LO will not plan a 6 point 13 way with in and outs with a group that has a few 100 jump jumpers on it. It most likley will not work. I disagree with Quade....I don't think a LO needs a coach of instructor rating. There are plenty of great LO's that have none of these ratings. Just because you don't have the ratings does not mean that you can not teach. A good LO should be a Mentor to the skydivers.....I always try to give feedback to everyone on the dive...good and bad...I give the good in public, and the bad in private. A good LO will take the jump as an oportunity to teach a little bit on each dive. A good LO should not be afraid to cut people for the good of the group. This is why I like the idea of having a few organizers...One for the "Hot Shots" (10-20 ways), one for the regular joes 8-15 ways , and one for the younger jumpers (4-8 ways). They should also feel free to move a jumper up to a higher group if they think that they can handle it. The LO should be aproachable, friendly. (So much for me and Boxman). Well I nee to "WORK" so if you want more....PM me Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  21. Well, that's your privilege. Let's not forget that this part of the discussion was prompted by the statement "I was in Eloy this weekend and I didn't see anyone cut from any of the loads. I also think that 2,3,or 4 ways are a better way to improve you skills." Note the word "better". Your have argued that you can learn (some) big way skills with 2, 3 and 4 ways, but I don't see that you have made the case that they are learned better than by actually doing big ways. Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  22. Still, from 40 way to 110 way.... 2 A/C to 5? And almost last out of the left trail? Not a big deal really...Thats why I don't do big ways...I personally find them boring as hell. And you didn't respond to all the other things I wrote...I have noticed that when you don't have an answer....You don't reply. I think that big ways help you learn big ways...Hell I never said they didn't. If I were going to put a 100 way up, I would not just grab 4 way jumpers that have never swooped. But you can learn the skills need to do big ways on any skydive. And a 20 way piece flies just like a two way if people are doing the right thing. Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  23. Well the suit flies great...If it lasted, and the service was any good I would recomend them. But 4 out of 4 on my 4way team fell apart, and she basicly told us "Oh well, your problem" Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  24. If you can fly your body, you can fly solo, a 2 way, a 10 way a 100 way piece. Every exit can be done in a small group....In fact I have done several exits on 2 ways that I would never do in a 30 way...Like hanging upside down from the bar, or hanging from a seat belt outside the plane. John, your a pilot....Collision avoidance is collision avoidance... MOST accidents I have seen have been only 2 people hitting each other....Thats it, infact I have never heard of a 3 or 4 way collision...Well that means that all it takes is 2 people to collide.....If you can fly your canopy and keep your head looking around....You can avoid 99% of collisions Really? I can practive front float on a solo....And all you ahve to do is leave with the other group...how hard is that? Nope, you just choose to ignore my input. If you can jump, fly to your slot, track away, deploy, and not collide with anyone, and can stay calm...you can do a big way. I know this, I have done several big ways, and was invited on the 300way, but 4way won out. My first big way was the Javelin 110 way, I had only 600 jumps and was 24 years old. The largest thing I had been on before was a 40way...I had no problem being the second to last diver Left trail otter. I don't see the big issue here. Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  25. Coming from a trail plane, or maybe 2 or three planes back from the base plane, exiting as a floater with 7 or 8 people outside the plane, exiting as a late diver without too much delay or getting tangled with the guys in front or beside you, finding your slot among 100+ people, sheepdogging the 5 people ahead of you, flying a piece with 19 other people, finding clean air to deploy in with 100+ other folks tracking away in a staged break-off, dealing with waves coming through the formation, adjusting fall rate as the formation builds to 20, 50, 100 people, landing in a confined area with 100+ other canopies in the air... If you can learn all that doing 2 or 3-ways, why does Airspeed (among others) offer big way training camps? ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
