Incidents and when to report them?
Ron replied to PhreeZone's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Why hide it? This is a very small sport we are in. We find out soon enough. I would rather get the info out as soon as possible with the accurate info..Than wait, and then get a second or third hand report. Yes, why hide it...We all screw up, let someone learn. Even if it just reinforces the already known. Yep I would rather post it, than have someone who does not know the whole story post it. Nope, that would be fucking stupid. Why say anything at all if you are gonna lie or hide stuff? Was it dangerous? Did it hurt someone? 1. Define what you want. You can't go after something and make choices on how to get it if you don't know EXACTLY what you want. "Going back to school" is nice, but "Going back to USF and getting a degree in Marketing" Is better. a) Write it down. So you can remind yourself. b) Tell others. So they can help you make the right choices, and help you define your plan. Even the guy that challenges your plan is helping you. It helps to define exactly what you want and figure out how to get it. 2. Break it down into small easy to reach goals. The goal of "Getting a degree" is very large...."Going and picking up an application", "Filling it out" and "turning it in" are easy. 3. Enjoy each goal as you reach it......If you don't figure out how to make it happen and don't get discouraged. Thomas Edison wrote: 4. Get off your ass and do it already!!!!!! Even if your plan is not perfect...Even if its not done yet...Get moving..NOW!!!! Take the first step as soon as you know what it is....Start building momentum in the right direction. The hardest part is to start. If you want to go back to college...Get the damn application NOW. If you want to learn to fly a plane, call a flight school and schedule a lesson...NOW! Get moving.....NOW!!!!! 5. Never give up. Again Edison (A Hero of mine): "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

I used to pull low....Then I had some friends walk up to me and say: "If you bounce we are going to piss on your body while it is still warm". "If you do it again, we are going to beat your ass" Worked for me. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

The problem is that there is no such thing as an accident. There are only errors in judgment. I was in a risk assesment class. The instructor told us that there was no such thing as an accident. We tried to argue with him...but every incident we brought up, he slammed us back down. Using Lisa's example....The manufactorer of the rig screwed up and thought that the groment would be fine. People don't mantain their rigs. People turn into the ground. Pedestrians who get hit crossing a street didn't cross at the right place, did't look well enough, or misjudged the crossing....Or maybe the driver was not looking for a guy to cross the street...Either way...An error in judgment, not an accident. But the simple fact is that Skydiving is not a Safe sport. I like what Winsor said about it basicly being commiting suicide. You throw yourself out of a plane....If you do nothing you will die, if something goes wrong you could die. That does not sound like a safe sport to me. No, my point is you don't know enough about those aspects of the sport to say what is, and what is not dangerous. You don't have to do it, but you have to have some idea of that aspect of the sport. I only know of ONE death from CReW that was broken off before 2 grand...And it was an exit issue at a competition. So for you to say CReW, Wingsuits, BASE are dangerous, but Skydiving is "safe" is wrong. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

Isn't it time for a serious talk about low turns??
Ron replied to skydiver51's topic in Safety and Training
Wrong. Steve Morell was killed at the Nationals I think in 1995. Two folks wrapped up in Keystone in 96, one had a low cutaway. There might be more, these are just the people I knew. Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334 -

Education seems to be working some...But education takes time, and not everyone will listen. Several DZ's already have regulations...I suspect more will. VectorBoy...you are right...I am young, and I know I will start to lose more friends over more things...But most of my friends are around my age, and they are dying from skydiving, not driving, eating raw cookie dough...ect. And Hell, Im getting ready to tie a knot if this BSR shit storm starts again...Its clear the USPA does not give a rats ass about it. And its clear that the 100 jump wonders know it all already and will not listen. So why waste my breath? Good god. You really don't get it do you? Both are not SAFE...But that does not make them UNSAFE. Bicker with someone else...I not dealing with you anymore. Put that ego in check home boy "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

Congradulations.... Do you owe beer for it?...sorry had to. I think its great. My parents are both Alcoholics. I stop drinking every few mths just to see if I can. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

Take a look at the whole Wingload BSR crap we did. The USPA told us to take a hike. Several of us tried...No one cared "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334 -
Where in the hell did you get that idea? I never said racing was safe. BTW its not the metal that will "Save me" its a whole bunch of stuff that MIGHT save me. But I never said it would anyway. I said. There is a difference between safe and unsafe. Driving a race car is not safe...But it is also not UNsafe..It does have a higher risk than say jacking off in the bathroom, but it is not UNsafe. And you said in another thread that you thought you were smarter than Bush????? I bet he knows the difference between safe and unsafe. Isn't it time for a serious talk about low turns??
Ron replied to skydiver51's topic in Safety and Training
Maybe, but I am comparing the number of deaths that I have seen from one thing, and comparing it to the rest of my life. A limited number of folks that I know that skydive that have died due to one cause to the larger number of folks that I know that have died period (That also includes jumpers that died NON skydiving deaths). And I have had more people I know die from skydiving than all other things combined. Lets say I know only two hundred people. 100 that jump, 100 that don't. And I have had 5 friends die (I don't know how many to be honest, and Im not going to count)...only one was not skydiving related. Now to be honest I know a hell of a lot more non skydivers than skydivers....Why is it 4/5 of the deaths of my friends were skydiving related if I know more non skydivers than skydivers? Answer...Skydiving is a high risk sport...regular life is not. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334 -
Walk on the DZ this weekend. Chances are that in 5 years one of the folks you see will be dead from skydiving. 1 in 1,000 active jumpers die each year. The WFFC has a fatality almost every year. You put yourself into a situation that if you do nothing, or the wrong thing...you will die. Hell, you can do everything right and still die. And just like russian roulette...every time you jump you risk death. Russian roulette is not "safe" neither is skydiving. I am really done here....someone else take it. The relevance is you don't know enough to know its not safe. I never said it was UNSAFE...I said it is not safe. Safe (adj) 1 Secure from danger, harm, or evil. 2 Free from danger or injury; unhurt: safe and sound. 3 Free from risk; sure: a safe bet. 4 Affording protection: a safe place. By skydiving you put yourself in harms way...If you do nothing, or do the wrong thing you DIE. That is NOT #1,#2,#3, or #4 Its not safe. So far so good. No, she thinks its safe remember? But CreW, BASE, Swooping are all dangerous...Which she has never done. No, what makes Skydiving unsafe is the fact that you put yourself into a situation that if you do nothing, or do the wrong thing YOU WILL DIE...Hell even if you do the right thing, YOU CAN DIE. On every jump you have put yourself into a situation that if you don't react corectly....You are dead. I did 140mph last night....No real conection here, but it was cool as hell, and had to tell someone. But I have done 120 on a race track....It was not unsafe. If you think skydiving is safe you are wrong. Its not. It can't be. It can be made safer, but it is not, and it will not be safe. Funny thing is 10 years ago no one would think its safe. 31 years of life, and 10 years skydiving I have lost more friends in the 10 years than in the 31. Thats 10 years of Skydiving vs. 31 years of ALL other possible ways to die from accidents, murder, war, sickness....get the picture yet? Oh geeze....I really don't want to do this. In fact I'm not. I started to try, and Im not going to do it. I don't keep count, and I don't plan on doing it now....Its a lot, and I still feel each death. Besides we lost 24 people this year How many have you lost yet? How many jumps do you even have? Any instructor ratings? And have you done any of these yet? So maybe you don't know whats safe and whats not? CreW for one is as safe as regular skydiving if done right (It is also the only other from this list that I know).so maybe you don't have enough experience to know what is "Safe" and what is not? I have over 2,500 swoops....How many do you have? I have lost more friends to skydiving than driving a car...And ALL of my friends drive, very few jump. 10 years and more dead friends than 31 years of ALL types of death except skydiving. You don't know what you are talking about. Simple as that....Telling yourself that this is safe is not smart. Beginners try to convince themselves that this sport is safe.....People who have been in the sport for a while know its not. You can do everything right and still die. Im done with this and you. Continue to skydive with blinders on...If you make it to 10 years give me a call and tell me if you still think its safe. Edit to add: Anyone that has told you this is safe...lied, or has no clue. My defination of "safe" comes from the simple fact that I have buried more folks from skydiving than from car crashes, mosquito bites, bad food, gunshots...Hell all of these combined. Hell, from ALL other causes of Death that you can think of. So ONE thing has caused more death than all others. You still think its safe? My 10 years, 3,000 jumps and dead friends say you are flat out wrong. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334 -

Just cause you don't plan on swooping does not mean you are safe..... Panic turns kill people as well. And you are wrong. It is not "safe". You are putting yourself into a very dangerous situation. It can be made "safer" with training and better equipment....But it will never be "safe" You can do everything correct and still die in this sport. Please don't kid yourself into thinking this is safe....It is not "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334 -

Starting hookturns in full flight or a braked aproach
Ron replied to eugeneskydiver's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I start with a double front, and then go to the turn. I go with the double fronts to build speed, and also to pressurize the canopy to reduce any chances of it folding up on me. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334 -
Around 250-300...I log like shit and can't see buy a ProTrack when I have a perfectly good Pro Dyter. Around 150 were 4way, 30 8way. About 20-25 hrs of tunnel flying this year, and 40 hrs of coaching in the tunnel.....so that kinda made up for my lack of skydiving. I have managed 300 a year for 10 years. 500 was my best year. 160 my best mth. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
