Nope . . . completely on purpose. Arrive Safely John

I grew up in rural Vermont. Cable TV was something we read about in Popular Mechanics . . . we had a black and white TV with rabbit ears. We were lucky enough to get all three networks, although NBC (which seemed to have all of the shows I really liked) was sometimes a bit iffy. I could fix the reception during those iffy times by standing in front of the TV and holding the rabbit ears in one hand. One of the shows for which I would endure standing up holding onto the antenna to watch was CHiPs. CHiPs episodes were packed with lots of cool things that I had never seen before, like Jet Skis, chicks in bikinis on roller skates, and yes, even skydiving. Season 5, Episode 97, included an air show with a demo jump by the Golden Knights. I remember thinking then how cool it would be to jump out of an airplane. In 1999 NBC made a CHiPs reunion show, and the day it debuted they had a 24 hour marathon. I got to see Episode 97 that day, but with an experienced eye - both as a skydiver and Olden Knight. The team was having a hard time that day, crashing and burning all over the target. [It would only be 11 years after that episode aired when I would be crashing and burning all over the target myself.] When season 5 comes out on DVD I will be able to download that episode and keep it as a reminder of what was probably my earliest skydiving influence. It occurred to me that if there were dropzone.com users old enough to identify airplanes, drop zones, and jumpers from the 1950's in this forum, someone might remember this episode, leading to some interesting conversation. Who knows, maybe someone was even involved with the event? Arrive Safely John

I wear gloves all the time. In warmer temps I wear summer Neumanns. In cooler temps I wear winter Neumanns. For the cold ones I wear winter Neumanns with OR PL Base Gloves underneath. The winter Neumanns are sized a little big and the liners are true fit . . . that makes the conbination work well. For high altitude HAHOs in the winter time I wear Gates ski gloves. They pull off quite easily if I need to get rid of them in an emergency. Otherwise I am able to get a reasonable amount of dexterity and grip while wearing them. More here Arrive Safely John

1) I delete them 2) I run it through Snopes. If unconfirmed or false, I reply to the sender with a link to the Snopes page. I delete everything that has been forwarded multiple times and is broken up by forward indentation marks. I only forward really good things, and I copy/paste them into a new email, clean up the text using a little freeware tool (I forget the name) and put all of the recipients in the Bcc: line (using my own address as the only one in the To: line). This is a unique forum in this community. As a result, the application of the no advertising rule requires some clarification. First, please refresh your memory regarding the rule itself: This forum is the most appropriate place to post information about advances in wind tunnel technology, construction plans and updates about new wind tunnels, renovations and/or improvements to existing tunnels, and related information. It is also the best place for announcing *major* wind tunnel events. This forum may not be used to post ads to buy or sell a product or service. The two key pieces of information that usually push a post over the no advertising line are 1) pricing (prize money info is OK), and 2) details on how to order the product or book the service. A *major* event such as a tunnel competition or tunnel camp is fine, but specific details on pricing and booking should be provided via a website/email link or telephone number, not in the post. Specials or discounts are not considered major events. This application of the no advertising rule is similar to the Events and Places To Jump Forum - this thread may be helpful in gaining more clarity on the issue. Two exceptions regarding pricing are the hourly rate and prize money. Tunnel Owners and Staff or patrons in the know may answer questions posed by forum users, but may not offer the information up without being asked. I equate the hourly rate to the price of jump tickets, which is fair game here as part of normal conversations. If there are any questions about this issue, please discuss it here or send me a PM. I will try to edit advertising out of posts that contain otherwise acceptable information. There are some existing posts here that may already need to be cleaned up - please be patient as I handle them case-by-case. Posts that are blatantly considered advertising will be removed. Thanks! It's not an issue unless you wear blue lenses while eating green M&Ms. Then you'll have to be careful so you don't poke your eye out. Arrive Safely John

I'll come home from work and he will be listening to my music downstairs - trying it out on his own. Or I'll be playing a CD in my car and - quite suprisingly - he will change the song to a particular one saying "I like this one." Arrive Safely John

It's funny . . . Jumper03 asked me last week if I was still doing the Retro thing. I told him it has never been Retro for me . . . I grew up with it. It's Retro for Logan and his generation, who have discovered music from 35 years ago on their own and embraced it. That is extremely cool to me. John Waite re-recorded "Missing You" with Alison Krauss, which I have seen in a video on CMT. The one mega-event that I am sorry I missed was Eric Clapton's Crossroads Blues Festival in Antigua a few years ago. I have it on DVD . . . that would have been a great event to attend. Bill Wyman, no longer touring with the Stones (mostly because he hates to fly) has a very good blues band that tours in UK. I hear them on XM Radio all the time. Arrive Safely John

And perpetuating the amazing retro movement, there was a kid there who couldn't have been more than 14 . . . long stringy blonde hair and a black Johnny Cash "At Folsom Prison" t-shirt. Peter Frampton's quote about the phenomenon: "All of a sudden, there were three generations of families at the show, and it blew my mind. The newer listeners want to find their own music, not be told what to listen to." Arrive Safely John

Somebody yelled something about David "Boowee" from the audience last night. Peter politely admonished him . . ."It's a Boowee knife, and David Bowie. But I know him as Dave Jones from school." Arrive Safely John

Outstanding. Just like most of us, his voice has dropped a little over the years, so he didn't go WAY up like he did on his landmark live album in 1976. Otherwise he was right on the money. The first note of my fave ("All I Want To Be Is By Your Side") is in the upper third of his range ("Do what you do . . ."), and he nailed it. His guitar skills have gotten better, I think. The other guitarist, from Raleigh as I mentioned earlier, was about 6'6" tall and thin, with a Jeff Lynde curly head of hair. He was very good. Arrive Safely John

It was a great show . . . a small venue, a great mix of music, and a lot of old bald fat people holding up lighters. There were two local musicians (Raleigh) in the band, one of which was a guitarist that was allowed a few solos - very cool. After the second tune ("Signed, Sealed, Delivered . . .") Peter asked security to stop keeping people from approaching the stage to take pictures - even cooler. Most appropriate for the Raleigh show: a woman hollered something at him from the crowd and he said "I thought I told you to wait in the truck!" Logan loved his rendition of Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun." "All I Want to Be Is By Your Side" was my fave. I was texting my pal and fellow audiophile during the show . . . he's going to see the same show tomorrow night in South Carolina. Arrive Safely John

Besides eBay, does anyone know of an online bookseller that sells signed first edition hardcover books? I am looking for a signed first edition Stephen Ambrose for a gift. Arrive Safely John

I smoked pretty heavily for about three years of my young life - a pack and a half a day and two packs a day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I got tired of the mess - ashed everywhere, everything smelled like the ashtray (clothes, car, pillow, etc.). One day I decided to quit and I put them down. That was 21 years ago. For several years I would smoke one cigaretter a year just to remind myself why I quit . . . now I haven't done that in about 10 years. I can only think of a few habits that do damage to your body every time you engage in them - smoking is one of them. Arrive Safely John

How long before you were back???
slotperfect replied to Myrka's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have been grounded three times due to jump injuries: -4 weeks for a badly sprained ankle (landed on the downhill side of a ditch as a student) -2 weeks for a bruised tailbone and sprained back (blew my approach on a demo and slammed my butt on the ground) -1 week for a bruised heel (running out a hard landing in no wind doing target accuracy training on concrete) All in all I am doing pretty well. For everyone: challenging each other to learn more about what policies, procedures, or training best fits your DZ/school's way of doing business is great stuff. When it becomes personal and dirt starts to fly, the benefit and the objectivity go away. Please keep it civil. Thanks, Arrive Safely John
