    I have several jumps out of an AN-2. It was a very interesting aircraft to add to my list, although it was slower than death climbing to 12,500 FT and cold in the winter time. Arrive Safely John

    I saw the film "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" when it came out four years ago. Out of curiosity I poked around on the internet a bit, and found that the film was based on events from several of a series of novels by Patrick O'Brian, based on the friendship between a Royal Navy ship's captain and doctor. I read the first three books in the series of 20 (a partially finished 21st is also available) and was enthralled by the quality of the work. O'Brian bases many of the events on actual ships and actual battles during the Napoleonic Wars at the turn of the 19th Century. This weekend I started over again, and I'm enjoying them even more. The original post obviously begets conversation about whether or not a particular flag should be kept from touching the ground, but please keep those conversations pointed toward the skydiving aspect of the topic, not the fundamental (moral, etc.) aspect.     Service life of the CYPRES is 12 years, 3 months. After that service life expires, it is deemed unairworthy by the manufacturer. FAR part 105 states that "If installed, the automatic activation device must be maintained in accordance with manufacturer instructions for that automatic activation device. So, if a Rigger were to install, or a jumper were to use, or a pilot were to allow on his airplane, a CYPRES that has reached the end of the manufacturer's specified service life, he is breaking a Federal law. If I remember correctly, the original service life was 10 years. Once the first batch started getting close to that, Airtec felt comfortable enough with the historical data collected over 9+ years of use to extend the service life to 12 years, 3 months. Beyond that, I am told, there is no reliable data to allow for a safe and accurate timeframe to retire a unit from service before its components begin to fail. Arrive Safely John
