Several knife manufacturers now make "automatic" knives. I have a large one from Benchmade that I use at work. I don't take it home just to save me the trouble of having to explain it in the wrong circumstances. Arrive Safely John

What's the smallest tandem student you've taken?
slotperfect replied to cpoxon's topic in Instructors
4 feet 8.5 inches tall, 85 lbs. Aside from her having a ton of excess leg pad and leg strap material between her legs making it difficult for her to waddle to the aircraft, it worked beautifully (Sigma harness). I have a picture of TK Hayes from Skydive City in ZHills jumping a local DJ called "Dave the Dwarf" using what looks to be a Strong system (attached). He is a dropzone.com user (tkhayes)- shoot him a PM. Arrive Safely John -

John Kelly, Jr - JP from Byron
slotperfect replied to jdobleman's topic in Blue Skies - In Memory Of
This is incredibly sad news. JP had brightened up these forums for a long time and will be badly missed. Although I never had the opportunity to meet Deuce in person, we interacted here in the forums many times. Having talked to some of us who knew him personally, he was one of a kind. Not here in the open . . . there are often exchanges of information behind the scenes that reveal more about the poster and their intent. Moderators have the ability to view IP addresses of those who post in the forums they moderate, which has proved quite handy in these situations (e.g. the Vigil bashing threads in G&R). Notice that since his original poke at SVNH he has not replied to any of the reactions here? Hmmm . . . Arrive Safely John

Not having to provide real info is a feature that the site owner would like to keep. There are situations in which people have legitimately posted anonymously. Feel free to shoot him a PM . . . Arrive Safely John

Two people deal with the Classifieds section of this site - Sangiro and Phreezone. Anytime there is an issue with a potential scammer, send one of them a PM. Arrive Safely John -
I agree, but it does take some time to develop so its useful. It's also harder to recognize important altitudes the higher you are; it's more effective around pull altitudes. I completely disagree. There are situations in which having two visual altimeters is advantageous: -For all of my harness-hold AFF jumps I wear a Neptune on my left hand and a Galaxy inside my left wrist. I have an immediate altitude reference on either hand, which I can see docked and assisting with a pull or giving hand signals. -I indirectly wear two visual altimeters when I do tandems as well. I wear a Neptune or Galaxy on my left hand and put an Altimaster II or Galaxy on my student's left wrist/hand. It's primarily for their reference, but serves as a backup if mine dies. If they show significantly different altitudes, especially 4000 feet and below, have them both chambered and see which one is reading correctly - then send the one that is out of calibration to the manufacturer for maintenance. Paul Rafferty - post vibes here
slotperfect replied to Raefordite's topic in Blue Skies - In Memory Of
When I was a GK we had two "Team Family" members named Gene and Helen Sebeck (sp?)that were snowbirds living in Yuma, AZ every time we were there for winter training. Gene was a WWII prisoner of war, having been a waist gunner on a B-17 shot down on Black Thursday. Gene was one of the real POWs held in Stalag 17 (the one that inspired the movie of the same name). Gene and Helen loved Raff, and it was mutual. He went out of his way to spend some quality time with them, as he did with many of us. My third year on the team, I think . . . we did a demo into the RV park that Gene and Helen called home during the winter months. The narrator and all of the demonstrators took the first two live passes, and then a couple of RW Teamies brought their Sabres into the target, which was a small roped-off section of the parking lot. Paul swooped in with his Sabre, elevatored over the target, and pegged the most beautiful dead center you've ever seen. We were talking about the demo in the C-31 over Cox Field the next day, and I noticed that he had colored in the white "Neumann" logo on his gloves to read "UMA MAN" Add me to the list of those that thinks of him often . . . It is always very curious when the following characteristics show themselves all at once: -Newly registered -No profile (and therefore posting anonymously) -One post or several posts only one one subject, usually taking a poke at someone, some place, or something. It is only fair to give you the benefit of the doubt that: -You have been lurking for a while as a guest and only registered because you now have something to say. -You didn't fill out your profile because you didn't think it was important. -You only have one post because that is all you have to say. Assuming that is the case, I suggest that you fill out your profile so: -We know that you are a real person, not an identity just created for a particular agenda -We might be able to gain a better understanding of where you are coming from with your posts. Original Dytter uses 4ea 399 type batteries, although there have been posts here that folks have used 355 type batteries, which I was unable to find in the same place. Pro Dytter takes uses 2ea CR 2330. Batteries Plus is expensive but they are all over the place in the States. Radio Shack is another good source that is easy to find, at least in the US. Right now 74 downstairs during the day, 75 at night; 73 upstairs during the day, 74 at night. Once it gets really hot this summer, that will drop by a degree or two in each place. When I am in Tucson in June my hotel room will be set on "Alaska." Arrive Safely John

The Search Posts function will often reveal good information from previous discussions on many subjects, including this one. Commonly referred to as "Beer Rules," the tradition within the sport of skydiving is one that draws people together. If you won't buy alcohol, then buy something non-alcoholic that people will enjoy. A note to all . . . please be careful of posting individual contact info here in the forums without permission. Company contact info (URLs, email addys, phone numbers) is fine, but cell phone numbers or ANY personal info should not be posted without permission. You can also do the manufacturer's rep a favor by changing the "@" in the email address to "AT" which will help keep them from getting spammed. Thanks! h Arrive Safely John

What Is Your Definition of a Double Malfunction?
slotperfect replied to slotperfect's topic in Safety and Training
One of the problem with polls (for me at least) is that it is difficult to convey my ultimate intent in gathering the information when the poll is created without "steering" the results in one direction or another. Add the "can't please everyone" factor and it makes polls far from perfect. I allowed multiple answers and left an "Other" option (as I always do) to try and make up for any unforeseen ambiguity. So far, the poll is providing exactly what I was looking for . . . an international perspective, and different perspectives from within my own aero club (USPA). It is also revealing that many people consider a main/reserve entanglement a separate category of its own. My own understanding of a double malfunction, coming from US Military Free Fall and USPA Group Member DZ experience, is similar to Tonto's, extracting a main/reserve entanglement as its own category of malfunction. What this info has done for me is to 1) gain a better understanding of some very experienced opinions that double mals are "frequent" or "on the rise," and 2) help me filter any double malfunction statistics I see within various fatality summaries with the understanding that some reports include main/reserve entanglements in that category. I used a search engine to look for skydiving clipart, and found "Sangiro's Synergy." Once sangiro established dropzone.com and posted a link from the "Synergy" site, I wandered upon this community. I spent a lot of time reading the articles and surfing the classifieds; my entrance into the forums was a bit later. This was really my first foray into an internet forum . . . I had seen rec.skydiving, but the content was very hard to follow because of the noise. Arrive Safely John

Do you go out of your way to make an x000th jump a non-working one?
slotperfect replied to cpoxon's topic in Instructors
I have tried on three of them, but all of them were unsuccessful. 1000 was a broken 18-way attempt 2000 was a work jump (filming a military student and instructor) 3000 was a broken 10-way hybrid (funneled by a fellow dotcommer) 4000? Who knows . . . maybe I can take my wife out on another tandem and my son and daughter can come and dock on her. Now THAT would be cool! Arrive Safely John
