  6. A colleague of mine who does R&D for various types of footwear says that the majority of ankle support does not come from the upper of a boot - it comes from the stability of the footbed. That's why trail running shoes are built as they are. This defies conventional wisdom, but it makes complete sense. Arrive Safely John

  9. I think that Paragliding and Ground Launching have the most relevance as additions since they are most closely related to skydiving and BASE. I picked up a great deal of knowledge about turbulence by reading tdog's article a while ago. General atmospheric and flight related theory affects all pilots - the information is beneficial to us all. Arrive Safely John
  10. I whole-heartedly agree! DZ altitude (or elevation) is a key factor in sizing up the environmental conditions of a DZ locations to ensure one can jump there safely. Arrive Safely John

  14. And . . . there you go! I don't recall ever being paid cash for a demo - directly, anyway. When I was a GK it was an assignment, which I got paid for, but that's a little different. Food seems to be a fairly common means of compensation. On one of my first few demos (as a member of the 82nd Team) we jumped into the North Carolina Motor Speedway in Rockingham for a Busch Series race. Our sponsor was CSX railroad. They fed us burgers & beer, let us watch the race from their corporate booth, and gave us a logo mini-maglight. I still have it in my Rigger kit. At one of my many GK demo locations, I was being interviewed by a newspaper reporter. From the start, the interview was not going very well. She was hung up on a line of questioning about what pay, perks, benefits, etc. we received as GKs that other soldiers did not. I had no idea what her motives were for the questions she was asking. She honed in on pay . . . she asked if we got paid more for doing demos. I explained that we got jump pay like other Army Paratroopers, but did not get paid especially for doing demos. She then asked me if I would jump out of airplanes even if they didn't pay me for it. I looked her in the eye with a big smile on my face and said "what do you think?" The interview went very well from there. Arrive Safely John

  17. 90% of my LP collection was sold at a yard sale, and I got rid of my turntable once my CD collection began to grow in the late 80s. Now I buy the CD and rip it to mp3 for versatility. Right now my mp3s are stored on a 60GB external hard drive . . . I am soon to shoft those to an 80 GB iPod whixh will be more useful. Arrive Safely John
  18. Over the last four years or so I have been busy rebuilding my music collection. My once extensive vinyl LP collection is slowly but surely being replaced by CDs. The cool thing is that Greatest Hits collections, once limited to 8 or 9 songs and usually disappointing for the true audiophile, have evolved into nicely done 2 CD collections. I have been eating them up. April Wine is next on my list. None of the compilations grab me, so I am going to buy the three albums I wore the grooves out on years ago: First Glance, Harder . . . Faster, and The Nature of the Beast. I discovered April Wine when I discovered CHOM-FM from Montreal in 1978. I remember really enjoying their three guitar sound. They are still making music . . . Jerry Mercer (drums) must be nearly 70 years old. Arrive Safely John

  22. If anyone knows of a USPA Advanced Instructor Course being conducted in the Continental United States in the months of August, November, or December 2007, please reply here or shoot me a PM. The only one I see on the USPA schedule at the moment is in late May/early June, which won't work for me. Thanks in advance . . . Arrive Safely John

  24. There are two threads in Gear and Rigging here and here on those topics. Let's keep those going. Looking at the time of the respective posts, I realize that this conversation was posted first, but it is simply easier for me to handle this moderation effort by locking this one and leaving the other two. Previous conversations on the subject of the extended repack cycle have predominantly been in G&R, and I think the topic is a better fit for that forum anyway. Thanks. Arrive Safely John
