I PM'd you my thoughts so I don't throw out any spoilers! Arrive Safely John

My family and I went and saw "Ray" last night. It's a fantastic movie - so well done! Jamie Foxx's portrayal of Ray Charles was priceless. I learned some not-so-nice things about him that I never knew, but there I was tapping my feet and humming along with the rest of the audience. It's a long one, though . . . Arrive Safely John

First, about the subject: -In a non-emergency situation, not hooking up the lowers on a tandem passenger harness is a bad thing. Tandem Instructors should establish a routine in their hook-up procedures based on what they were taught in their Tandem Instructor Course, and techniques learned from more experienced Tandem Instructors. If your routine gets interrupted for any reason, go back to the beginning and start your routine again. -Disciplinary action toward Tandem Instructors who make mistakes like this one will vary depending on who knows about it. If it stays on the DZ, the DZO and S&TA will likely handle it their way (as you have read there are differing opinions on how it should be handled). If it gets back to the rig manufacturer or USPA, they make take disciplinary steps of their own. Next, about posting highly sensitive subjects like this: -Be objective. The less objective you are, the more crap you will stir up, and the likelihood of the thread becoming an unproductive dirt slinging contest is high. -Carefully consider throwing in names and pictures. Think through what the end result might be for the Instructor concerned, the DZ he works for, etc. This is a public access forum, and throwing out names and pictures is a big step. I'll leave it up to you to judge whether it is the right one or wrong one. -Don't let others with heated opinions get your gander up. It will result in someone saying something that may be regretted later. Lastly, about the demise of the thread: -It has run it's course, and will no longer be productive. As stated in this thread, this forum is intended by Sangiro to target Instructors from all teaching methods. Anyone is welcome to post as long as it contributes to the discussion in a forwarding way. -It's too bad that useful discussion on controversial subjects turn out like this . . . Arrive Safely John

Like I said . . . if it doesn't work for you, shift it to a technique that does. I would much rather have a student pull a few hundred feet too high on the first skydive or two, allowing me to "dial them in," rather than pulling too low or reacting too late causing me to have to pull them out and them having to repeat the skydive. I have tried both, and found that the "lock on" altitude better sets up the student to be safe and succesful. Also, it morphs easily into the "no more turns altitude" for Cat D. I don't know where it originated . . . it is printed on the dive flow charts at my dropzone, though. I looked at the dive flows in the SIM and did not see it there. The bottom line for me is that it's a technique, one that works for me consistently, and I will stick with it until I find something that is a marked improvement. Arrive Safely John

Choose The Correct Forum For Your Post!
slotperfect replied to slotperfect's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It's time to readjust our attention to this again . . . just look at the first page. Eleven posts moved. I move them every day. It doesn't take a lot of time to read the forum descriptions and figure out where your post fits the best. Also, you can always ask one of the Moderators! PLEASE choose the right forum for your post! Arrive Safely John -
1) "Lock on @ 6000 FT" is an altitude trigger 2) "Begin pull sequence @ 5500" is another altitude trigger 3) "Decision altitude" @ 2500 FT 4) "Do not cutaway below 1000 FT" are two more. Those are special altitudes that trigger a performance related response. 1) "Watch for my pull altitude" 2) "Wave off & pull" 3) "Make a decision to cutaway or land with a malfunction" 4) "Too low to pull the cutaway handle" We use these at my dropzone, and for the most part they work well. From my experience, people that start out with altitude awareness issues have them regardless of the specific technique. Corrective training on the creeper doing dive flows with a countdown altimeter usually does the trick. If you don't like the verbage, nothing wrong with tweaking it a bit to suit youre technique - as long as your Chief Instructor has no objecttions. Arrive Safely John

Ditto. Your best bet is to call the manufacturer of the rig you plan to put it in, and ask them if it will fit. Back that up with testimonials from jumpers who have actually packed that canopy in that size container (you can get that here in the forums), and you will have made an informed decision. Then why not do a forum search to find the answers you need? Hard openings on a Sabre have been covered numerous times before. It's a dead horse subject in the forums. Arrive Safely John
