How to prepare for a winter jump?
slotperfect replied to grue's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
We do some high altitude stuff in the Winter sometimes that gets pretty cold. Thin layers of "technical" fabrics (microfiber, fleece, etc) work well for me. I also use those chemical hand warmers in the aircraft, shoving them in my jumpsuit pocket before the door comes open. Otherwise I just accept the fact that I'm going to be a bit cold. Would you please be more specific? Which manufacturer and what brand of links? Arrive Safely John

That website quotes the HiPer Link as being intended for main canopies. Arrive Safely John

I emailed Flight Concepts about their "Cinch Links" as well. Thanks, Erk. Arrive Safely John

I'm working on exactly that, regarding the PD Slink, Precision Wrap-It Link, and the Aerodyne P1487-01 Soft Link. First I wanted to confirm that each of those had been approved under TSO C23d as a separate component. So far the answer is yes (in writing) from both PD and Aerodyne. Waiting to hear from Precision via email. Once I confirm that, I will ask each US reserve manufacturer to approve (or disapprove) each of those links (by name) as being compatible with their reserves (by name). If it works out like I hope it does, I will share it here and wherever it might benefit the rigging community. BTW - if there are any other soft links manufactured in the US, please let me know the details and I'll try and include them. As far as componnents outside the US, I'll let someone in those geographic areas tackle this project for their rigging community. Arrive Safely John

I am gathering information now and will hopefully have some answers in the next coupla weeks. I have written proof that PD Slinks and Aerodyne's P1487-01 Soft Links are TSOd as separate components under C23d. I am waiting on a response from Precision regarding their Wrap-It Links. Once I get that response I will send a shotgun email to all of the US reserve canopy manufacturers requesting written approval to install each type of link, by name, on their line of reserve parachutes. I will post the results here when I get them. If the information is usable for everyone, I will pass it to Terry Urban as well. Arrive Safely John

Mike PM'd me to let me know he is now working for CPS. Arrive Safely John

Hi Dusty . . . please read your PMs.

I would snap that up! It's Summer there now, isn't it? Arrive Safely John

Since not all manufacturers post here, I will be glad to shoot out a broadcast email to all of the US manufacturers and post the results here. I know of three types of "soft" links here in the US: PD Slinks, Precision Wrap-It Links, and Aerodyne's P1487-01 Links Are there any more?? BTW - I already found this document from Aerodyne as written proof that their P1487-01 soft link has received TSO C23d as a separate component. The document also specifically authorizes uses of the P1487-01 links with both the Smart and Tempo reserve. I have a little more homework to do before I send out the shotgun email. I'll get back to you! Arrive Safely John

Hi Keith . . . Since it is always good to review the FARs, I just reviewed FAR Part 105.45 "Use of tandem parachute systems." I do not see your statement anywhere. Can you please elaborate on the portion of FAR Part 105.45 you interpret as meaning ". . .I must comply with the Tandem Manufacturers instructions on its use . . ."? Arrive Safely John

I removed my confusing reference to Roger Nelson's death. Thanks y'all for setting me straight. Remind me not to get on my PC before I have coffee! Edited to add: I misread Airman1270's reference to Carl Nelson's death. I incorrectly posted a link to Roger Nelson's Incident thread. Two kind sharp-eyed folks pointed that out to me and I removed my post and it's reply. Arrive Safely John

Manufacturer Contacts On dropzone.com

Changed "nightjumper" entry; Mike is now working at CPS. Added "sid" who I am told is a good DZ.com point of contact for Jump Shack. Arrive Safely John -
PM Nightjumper (Mike Forsythe), formerly of Jump Shack. He is a regular poster here and will be able to answer your question. You really need to ask the manufacturer of the "receiving" system. Arrive Safely John

If you wanted to reply to skycat's post, you need to click the "Reply" link from her post. Your input was pointed at mjosparky's post in the header. As for taking it seriously, this is a serious thread. Your initial reply was right on - I agree with it. Both sides have made their point, and it appears that emotions are running high. Your other comment was contradictory. Arrive Safely John

So, if you feel this way: Then why make this comment to egg it on? Arrive Safely John

There are SO many dual-triple-quadruple hatted folks out there, especially at small DZs. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be torn between the two. Thanks for considering the move, anyway! Arrive Safely John

Please tell me they're going to move either the USPA Instructor Forum and the PIA Rigger Forum so they don't conflict with each other!?!? Arrive Safely John

Search the forums for posts on how much skydiving experience is a safe foundation for starting to jump a camera on your head. There is a lot of sound advice from some very experienced camera flyers. There's also an article posted HERE. Personally I would discourage anyone with 30 jumps and 1 year in the sport from jumping a camera. Arrive Safely John

That is one of the most valuable things I have seen posted in a long time. Making an informed decision after doing research and getting several experienced opinions, including the manufacturer can yield excellent results, Arrive Safely John
