  1. If that is the case, people choosing to reply need to do so to the correct post, and be clear about who they are talking to. This is too hot a thread for ambiguity. Arrive Safely John
  2. Edited to add: SkymonkeyONE's post was #602 chriswelker's post #608 @ SkymonkeyONE kallend's post #617 basically seconded #608 Arrive Safely John

  4. This thread is deteriorating. It began as a call for action to curb 1-800-SKYRIDE's deceptive and unethical business practices. ASC predictably entered the conversation because of commonality of business practices and ownership that had been discussed many times before here in the forums. Chuting Star Rigging came then came under the microscope because it is "associated" by doing business on the same DZ. The list of "associated" people who seem to have been thoughtlessly lumped into a "bad guy" category now includes Chuck Blue. Now it's time for me to step up and wave the bullshit flag. Until now I have kept my opinion out of this thread. I saw from the beginning, and others who volunteer to manage this site agreed, that this thread would require more careful moderation than others because 1) it is an incredibly controversial subject, and 2) it is seen by us as such a valuable conversation within our sport that we didn't want it to be locked or removed once it resorted to inciteful comments and name calling. I do not know Cary or Ben. I have never been to ASC. I have never done business with Chuting Star Rigging, other than greatly benefitting from reading the "Rigger Rant and Rave." I was made aware of Skyride's tactics by a good friend who manages a large DZ. I deplore the deceptive, deceitful, and unethical business practices of any business that chooses to be blatantly dishonest out of sheer greed. I work at a DZ that accepts Skyride certificates. I have had two conversations with a key person in management there to get them to stop. It hasn't yet, and in a professional manner I told the person concerned that it would not be the last conversation I had with them about the subject. I will continue to do so as more evidence reveals itself to reinforce my point. They have read this thread, and I'm sure are reading this comment. Chuck Blue (SkymonkeyONE) works side-by-side with me. I have been skydiving at Raeford for 15 years, and Chuck has been there longer than I have. I feel comfortable speaking for him in saying that both of us will continue to work there, handling our concerns with Skyride affecting our beloved sport in our own way. We respect each other and our DZ environment enough not to carelessly group anyone into a "bad guy" pile and ruin already established relationships or the potential for future friends. Back to this thread . . . it is an open forum. Regardless of who is on what side, anyone is welcome to post here if they follow the Forum Rules. If they don't, we Moderators will deal with each case fairly and professionally and without bias. This will absolutely NOT turn into a situation in which one side gets flamed so they will go away and stop posting. Adding name calling or pointedly accusatory comments to already belabored points is not only ineffective, it clouds the clear and valid points that have been made here. Choose from what's important. 5. I will reiterate and emphasize Chuck's point about seeing a doctor. Take him a video of the type of skydive you will make, especially the opening (since that's what you're concerned about). Ask your DZO if there are any doctors that skydive there; they can help you get the information you need. Arrive Safely John
  6. Unfortunately, this project has come to a screeching halt. From the webmaster: Arrive Safely John
  7. If you want to post the truth in a factual objective manner on their forum, that is the way to go. I would encourage you not to "be a pest" in their forum on purpose, since it will doubtless result in a melee over here (and more work for me in an already very busy thread). Thanks! 8. We answered your question as you asked it. If you add a drogue release handle getting snagged, then yets indeed the main container will come open. Arrive Safely John
  9. So many times I have told people to "make an informed decision." Read the manual, scour the manufacturer's website, talk to several experienced professionals, read articles in the skydiving mags, visit a manufacturer, attend seminars conducted by professionals in the industry, invest some money in professional training. Gather information so that you as an individual skydiver are making your own informed decision, based on your experience level, physical attributes, jumping environment, personal goals, dreams, etc. Giving advice here carries the same message: "have an informed opinion." Do your homework. Be sure of what you are saying. If it turns out you were not quite correct despite the best of intentions, follow-up to correct yourself and make sure the recipient gets the correct information. All of us should take the time to find out about who we are taking advice from. There is a lot of very good information posted on this website, but it's your life on the line. Take the time to investigate the accuracy of the advice you get. Arrive Safely John
  10. I call them "magic words." I may not be getting through to a student, having tried more than one way of training them on a particular task. 99% of the time it has nothing to do with my skill as a teacher, nor the student's ability to learn. I simply don't have that student's "magic words." The key is to be professional enough to pass this student on to another instructor that they may "connect" with better, and find the perfect explanation that I was unable to make land for them. After all, it's all about responsibly fostering another fledgling into the sport, to ultimately see them find their own sense of freedom in our beloved blue skies. When I stand there, instead of making it all about my instructor ego, it makes teaching that much more rewarding. Arrive Safely John

  12. The webmaster for the POPS USA web page is compiling a list of personal webpage URLs that belong to USA POPS members. They will be posted on a links page on the POPS USA website. If you'd like your page to be included, email the webmaster at: uspops-web@earthlink.net. I have asked the webmaster if there are people doing the same in other POPS regions . . . if that is the case I will post contact information here.
  13. First of all, please don't put so much text in your subject lines; save the details of the question for the body of the post - thanks! To answer your question, if the drogue comes out prematurely in the aircraft it is possible for it to pull the curved safety pin, BUT - it won't prematurely open the main continer until one of the drogue release handles are pulled. If the drogue gets out of the aircraft before the pair, the pair is soon to follow. Even at slow Cessna airspeeds pulling a inflated 4.5 ft drogue back inside an aircraft is a near impossibility. Minding your handles, including your drogue, at all times is the best insurance against a premature deployment of anything in the aircraft. A tandem is not just another skydive. Arrive Safely John
  14. The last I saw of Tom was in the article this Summer about the Icarus Extreme VX-39 Project. Tom is the one in the picture leaning out the door holding the d-bag. It lists his company as "Ground Launch Systems, Inc. A Google search reveled this email address: info@groundlaunchsystems.com Hope that helps!

  16. As dead horses go, there are two species: 1) continually appearing new posts on subjects that have already been covered in many other posts, and 2) an individual thread in which all possible points have been made, constructive conversations have ended, and now it's just very opinionated people on two sides of an issue slinging mud or flames at each other. Good, informative, and constructive threads can get spoiled by differences of opinion elevating to personal attacks or generally hateful banter. Those threads will normally get locked. This is the definition that HH uses (link retrieved from the Forum Rules). That name, used in an accusatory tone, has been used rather flippantly here before. It's just the nature of things, I guess. 17. Speaking from my experiences attending and preparing candidates for AFF courses with Billy Rhodes, he only wants to see logbook entries (jumps, FFT, signatures) through 6 hours of FFT. I have not comment on logging jumps in groups other than I wouldn't do it that way - too much information is lost that way. Arrive Safely John
  18. Yeah, I know that one by heart. It's a beautiful song. I'm gonna suggest that one to my friends - maybe they will want to give it a try. Arrive Safely John
  19. I have several Alison Krauss/Union Station CDs. I love bluegrass, but have not had a lot of exposure to it. Thanks for the rec . . . Arrive Safely John
  20. From the Forum Rules: Simply use the search feature, choose the thread that best fits your new information, and resurrect it by replying to it. It will get more attention and be better supported by the other comments already in that thread. Nobody is opposed to new information, but having thirty different conversations about the same subject doesn't forward the "cause." Arrive Safely John
  21. A current USPA Instructor who has the current version of the test and answer key should be able to give you the test. They should not charge you for it. You can either mail or fax the completed license application. There is no B License proficiency card, just the requirements and the test. The requirements (including the live water training) will be verified by the Instructor administering the test by looking in your logbook. Arrive Safely John
