Scott Miller's Canopy Control Course
slotperfect replied to jblooming's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I want to chime in on this one and say how valuable the information in Scott's courses are. I participated in both his essential and advanced skills courses this week, and learned a TON! This course has incredibly valuable information for canopy pilots of all skill levels. He is professional, an excellent teacher, and has the experience and background to back up what he teaches. His emphasis on life-saving maneuvers is right on, and will save lives. Not only did I learn valuable things for myself, but also to help me teach others. Arrive Safely John -
We were glad to have you, Paul . . . I am glad I was there during the week for a change so I could meet you. I'm sorry your visit was so short, but I heard you say the magic words: "I'll be back!" I'll see you when you return. Arrive Safely John

I have done it twice . . . I don't remember how long it took me to get back in the air. The second time, I went to the Doc, who explained to me how serious a sinus infection could get. Now I choose to stay down if I have a cold - I don't mess with it. Arrive Safely John

Be careful Mark . . . take some time to think through your decision not to leave. Finding a safe place to stay inland for a few days might be the best decision you ever made. Arrive Safely John

We are already seeing some storm damage from TD Bonnie here in the Sandhills of NC. One tornado in Harnett County to the Northeast of me, and another in Maxton, South of Raeford. Small so far, with no injuries, but a fair amount of damage to a couple of homes, outbuildings, and a church. I am a bit concerned about the lot diagonally across the street from us, where they are in the middle of building a house. They just delivered a whole bunch of brick, cinder blocks, plywood, and lumber. Most of it is strapped together, but the plywood is just in a pile. I may take my son over Saturday and secure it inside the recently completed foundation. Looks like Bonnie is no longer a threat except for rain, but Sunday may be interesting: Hurricane Charley's Projected Path Arrive Safely John

I totally understand your reasoning . . . I used to be a Parachute Rigger but that wasn't too impressive at cocktail parties, so I changed my professional title to Aerodynamic Deceleration Engineer. Of course, to receive even MORE attention, a few years ago I jumped on board the politically correct movement and changed it again to Nylon-American. Because it's all about the title! Hi there, Sangiro is in Rantoul, and may just not have gotten to your DZ listing submission to approve it so it shows up on the DZ page. This thread kinda explains his situation. Cheers, Arrive Safely John

Like Chuck said, nobidy says a word about tips at Raeford, but they do happen. I get tipped now and again, and I am very appreciative of it. I try and go the extra mile to make the student's experience far exceed their expectations . . . not so I get a tip, but so they get the maximum personal benefit from what will likely be the only skydive they ever make. Many times I have chosen my family and my other responsibilities over my personal wishes. Over all, it has paid off, and I am VERY happy with the time that I do get to prusue my personal goals. You are not alone, and I acknowledge you for making a choice that forwards you in your life. WFFC will be that much sweeter next year knowing that you made the better choice. Arrive Safely John

Greetings from The Bomb Shelter at Perris! It was really slow out here late this afternoon, but I managed to get one skydive in. It's really slow in the bar too, but some big guy named Todd keeps buying rounds for everyone here, so I'm hanging for a bit. It took me 1 hour and 45 minutes to drive from Corona to Santa Ana this morning - welcome to California traffic! I drove over the mountain and through Lake Elsinore to get to Perris. It's really beautiful out here! Besides that, Todd just bought me another beer! Cheers, dude! I will be at Elsinore bright and early tomorrow for a little work biz, then I'm hanging 'til the day is done. Yes, Mark I will bring a cold beverage or two. Arrive Safely John

I will be stopping by Perris late Thursday afternoon, 5 August. I will be at Elsinore all day Friday, 6 August. I plan to make a skydive or two at each place. I hope to see some of y'all there! Arrive Safely John

Which mechanical altimeter do you like better?
slotperfect replied to cvfd1399's topic in Gear and Rigging
I agree with JP that the Galaxy is tops. I believe the upper limit of the operating range is 18K though . . . I believe the Stratosphere model is the one that is accurate to 30K. Arrive Safely John -
Yesterday I had a big lad (Mike) as a tandem student. His position in the door was perfect. When we exited, he pushed off the bottom of the Otter door so hard that he basically took the exit away from me. He immediately snapped into a nice arch, and I finished the exit & set the drogue. It was great to have a student that switched on, but it did surprise me a little. Nobody ever pushes off like that. Arrive Safely John

I saw Blue Oyster Cult in 1982 . . . caught one of Rick Downey's broken drumsticks. I had to shove it down my pants to keep people from stealing it from me. I agree that there are some incredible drummers out there . . . lots of them have been named already. I voted for Neil Peart in the poll with only two choices?!?!?!? Arrive Safely John
