  1. My fave is the old Singer 7-33. Give Sandy Reid a call at Rigging Innovations. He and I talked a lot about that particular model when I went through his Master Rigger Course. He may be able to steer you toward one that is already set up for harness work. Arrive Safely John
  2. The only thing I have ever tried like this is to offer a free tandem skydive as a raffle for my Daughter's elementary school class. The teachers were all in favor, but the principal shot it down being afraid of liability. The litigative society we live in can be so hobbling at times. Arrive Safely John
  3. Thanks for that wonderful report. Anytime I hear about people overcoming adversity it makes me smile. Well done Jackie! Post some pics!! Arrive Safely John
  4. When you give of yourself without expecting anything in return, and feel good about it as a result, your generosity will come back to you ten times over. If this is not happening where you skydive, you may want to shift a few things. People at our DZ buy beer, sodas, pizza, bagels, donuts - whatever. It's not about what the give, it's the giving itself that draws us all closer together. Arrive Safely John
  5. I detached this and moved it so it wouldn't ultimately hijack the thread. Arrive Safely John
  6. I usually do it for a jumper's third or so tandem, when the tandem is not intended as a "working" dive with the intent of the student completing AFF eventually. They are a lot of fun for me - only requiring a little more diligence in making sure there's nothing loose that will beat me or the student severely when at tandem terminal. Arrive Safely John
  7. From my experience "skygod" is used as a derogatory term amongst skydivers, describing those who are perhaps too arrogant and self-serving to mesh well with the majority of the skydiving community. I believe this to be an individual trait and don't see it as being pointed toward a particular skydiving culture or discipline. There will always be a "hot" discipline or skydiving sub-culture that dominates the pictures, articles, and advertising. I don't think that constitutes a label. I personally know a lot of swoopers, and they are as healthy a cross-section of the skydiving world as I might find in other disciplines. I have heard whuffos use the term "skygod" more loosely, pointing more towards a positive description. There are really much better words to describe someone that excels in what they do. 8. Those are for tandems. Don't use them for sport rigs unless you cut them in half. I suggest you go to your gear store and spend three or four bucks for a couple pounds of rubber bands in a plastic bag. Keep them in your gear bag, with a handful in the pocket of your jumpsuit. 9. It's a condition called "blocking." I did some homework on it. THe results are in one of my repies to the thread referenced above. Arrive Safely John
  10. #1885 (Emergency) About 25 intentional cutaways before that Arrive Safely John
  11. #1 Please don't hijack threads. It diverts attention from the original subject. I detached this segment of the thread because the original was asking for advice about buying a Wings harness/container. #2 The "RSL or No RSL" discussion is a dead horse in the forums. Many many very valuable opinions from very experienced and technically knowledgeable people are contained in numerous posts from the past. Use the forum search feature to find them. 12. Eric, I lost the link that you speak of, and the FAA site is like the proverbial haystack. Can you email it to me? Even better would be posting it in the G&R Forum!
  13. I will see Mark Procos on Monday. Email me your request of him and I will put it in his hands myself. Arrive Safely John
  14. Practically speaking, I do the same thing Chuck does, minus the X's. Read the instructions carefully . . . I am almost positive that renewing a higher rating automatically renews your rating lower on the scale. For example: getting signed off as an AFF I should automatically renew your Coach rating. TomBuch may be able to help a bit here . . . maybe he'll chime in?? Arrive Safely John
  15. I'm not sure exactly how big you are, but there may just be a suitable answer for you. A good guy to talk to would be atsaubrey. He has gone through the same steps you are beginning with now. Also, direct contacts with manufacturers will help you make the right choice. G'luck! Arrive Safely John
  16. So You Want To Be A Rigger? Good reading. Lots of answers to your questions. Arrive Safely John
  17. In 1992, the USAPT Team Rigger, Mike Mayo, ran a series of tests to determine what the best course of action was for each two-out scenario. Here is the PIA test report. Arrive Safely John
  18. From Poynter's Manual Volume I (Second printing, 1991): Mighty Mak: A nine-cell 337.5 sq. ft. ram-air canopy measuring 11'22"x30'. Made of F-111 fabric and 510 lb. braided Dacron lines. Ted Strong uses this canopy for his tandem jumps, or passenger rides. Weight 11.2 lbs. First introduced into the market in 1983. A Mighty Mak Reserve is listed in Volume II. Strong Enterprises Arrive Safely John
  19. Call or email Skydive Marana. Ask for Greg Behrens or Tony Frost. They are at Avra Valley Airport (although it has some new fancy name now), and were formerly at Pinal Airpark, both of them just North of Tucson proper. There is an old time skydiver there (I believe his name is Bobby) who has been there a long long time, and has skydived in all 50 states. Either of the owners or Bobby might be able to give you the info you're looking for. Arrive Safely John
  20. We have a nice one at Ft. Bragg, NC but that one is open only to Military Free Fall folks and it is very difficult to get on the schedule. There is one in Waynesville, NC also. I have never been there. One of the owners is a dropzone.commer. SkyVenture Raeford, NC is due to be completed later next year. There aren't any in South Carolina that I know of. Hope this helps. Arrive Safely John
  21. Do a Google search for "600lb dacron red." That will pop up a small list of manufacturers who use it. They might sell you a bit if you want a small quantity, or you can get the source from them. Ted Strong would be another good person to ask. Arrive Safely John
  22. I didn't get it either. It seems they only sent SPAM to those who need a little DZ fashion help. So Jeanne, what are you wearing right now? How you doin'? Arrive Safely John
