re-read where I talked about pandoras box already being opened in the united states. That has not happened here so we have less gun crime. It still exists, it does and will always to some extent. But the magnatude of people (percentage wise)in the USA running around with guns, statistically will result in more gun crimes and shootings. Pretty fucking simple really, just common sense. It is too late for america to be without the guns you have because they are there, they are hoarded and they are in abundance. I'm simply glad things are not like that here where I live... Just sayn. This will be moved to the SC in no time. It is also a prime example of why carrying guns is a fucking stupid idea, and the more people that do it, the more liklihood that this type of thing will happen. Unfortuantely for America, 'pandoras box' has already been opened long ago, so it is hard to reverse the situation. It makes sense to be able to protect ones self in the situation america is in. This is the basis of the argument of JR and his other gun tot'n mates, If only they could experience life without the paranoia that everybody is going to shoot them. we have guns here, rifles, you wll get laughed at if you have a handgun. Real men have hunting rifles and use them for hunting. But we don't have the same extent of gun crime that is prevailent in america. Unfortunately the situaton in the USA is not going to get any better soon. Forunately New Zeland, England and other countires that I have been to have much stricter rules on guns and carrying them. We can still get guns, go hunting and go to the range and practice but you simply do no seee the same extend of violent gun crime as you do in America. Because people do not carry and run the risk of 'going off the rails' momentarily and doing something stupid as the persont he article at the start of this thread has done. I have had 1 or 2 in 3500 or so tandems, sigma harnesses help alot. "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

I would love to but have not put any sort of effort into such endeavours. My wife however is quite experienced and competant in big ways, she has multipule world and national records in bigway and she has applied. I may attend (if she makes the cut) but I intend on competing in the swoop meet there also so we will have to see how business is in early 2013... Sounds about right to me, but hey, I am no expert either. "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

Yes but also controls the openings. What do you suggest controlling the openings means, and why would a minimum loading of 1.4 be suggested, do you think? "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

Yes I did, that was a typo. I actually jump my wifes crossfire2 89 loaded @ 2.4 from time to time and I can say the performance definately drops off, the recommended w/l's of a crosssfire are defiantely good ones. "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

no but it increased the problem. Why do you think xfires have a closed nose in the first place? why do you think there is a minumum wingloading of 2.4? "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

Assuming you are talking about the same person and the same incident, I know it was not her second jump on the canopy. Though I agree with most of what you said. I witnessed the incident and had to retrieve the camera helmet off her. When it happened she was flying straight and there was very little wind. Some said it was dust devil but I did not see a dust devil, I beleive it was wake turbulance, and no matter if she was extremely experienced or ( in this case) not... it was the canopes inabilty to reinflate or its tendency to collapse at such a low wingloading that was the problem. she could have avoided being there, but in that particulr landing area it is very common to see people landing with this proximity, and usually without a problem. sweet, then I can use drift and contour on my editing program... choice... "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

how long does this process take? "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

I have been using realxstream. It is very automated but you have to make sure you only record the footage you want. It is great. It only takes about 2 minutes the cue everything up and it will create the disk while you do other things like packing or jumpin on the next load. www.realxstream.com "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

Dont worry, found a place. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1425 "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

so if I have a program that can process MP4/go pro footage, it should process .mov drift footage? Is there a place where i can download sample files to test? I have an i5 quad core 8gb ram computer with a medium range video card and a gigabyte p55 motherboard. So the machine should not be a problem, this stuff gets a little over my head but it is your forte. If we could use drift as well as go pro I would ba a happy man. We are processing mp4 (using realxstream) and they are working on avchd right now... "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

should be good as long as you can process .mov files smoothly. "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

What is your point? no canopy can perform in 50 knots ground speed or with a 400lb passenger and a 300lb instructor? You lost me there bro? I am a small TM and I can take up to an 280lb passenger. Being in New Zealand I can also legally take a 70 lb child. I will use the same canopy for these in all conditions from 0 knots to 25 knots. these are our operating limits. and the canopies we have will work well in all those conditions. What is your point? Go Pro produces Mp4 files and drift produces .mov files. depending on what you use for editing, this is something to consider. "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

anybody got word about a new icarus canopy!?
rhys replied to virgin-burner's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
My guess is that they would have a quiver of different slider sizes and the rds will allow them to swap them out more quickly to get through the r & d more efficiently. just guessing though! "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix -
I believe it was a xf2 but I am not entirely sure. There was a problem with a batch of xf1's that were made in the USA, the canopies made in the spain and NZ factories were not effected . It was not a desgn flaw but a manufacture flaw. The resulting incident/s created much bad PR for Icarus and as far as I am awre the XF2 was developed to ease those concerns. Your question highlights how ingrained the mis-information has become about this. I did 800 jumps on a crossfire 1, 109 and learned to swoop on that canopy, it was very stable and handled turbulance very well, It was also loaded adequately. "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

and it is an extremely ground hungry canopy that will not get back from a long spot as well as a xfire. Crossfires are tried and true for beginner swoopers, and i beleve one should not begin to swoop untill they have a decent wingloading/recovery arc/margin of error. "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

It is not (necessarily) going to kill you. But you should use a canopy that is recommended by the manufacturer at that wingloading. You will find that you will get more performance out of the correct canopy, than an underloaded canopy. Get a Saffire2 at that loading, you get the nice openings and you can still run your progression, and will not be told that you have the wrong canopy. I have a girl here at my DZ that has an underloaded Crossfire, she will not be able to jump in slightly bumpy conditions, where she may be able to if she had an appropriate canopy... something to think about. I saw girl flying an underloaded crossfire (about 1.1). It collapsed at a very low level from wake tubulalance off a tandem canopy. She was about 4 metres to the side and about 6-8 metres behind (probably right in the wingtip vortex), this is a position that anyone could end up in on a busy landing area. Her (left side) canopy did not reinflate and she severely broke her leg. the right hand side kept flying and the left side just tuned to shit. she did not fall but was flung by the canopy into the ground. It was very distubing to watch and her compund fracture was infected as the bone stabbed into the ground. she was in hospital for some time with complications... Crossfires have a semi closed nose and require more airspeed/loading to recover from such a collapse. I would reccomend that you do not purchase a crossfire unltil you load it at 1.4 or more. From that wingloading to just over 2.0 they are terrific canopies and will reinflate just like any other canopy. My guess is that this issue is the reason for the minimum wingloading on them, but I may be wrong... An Icarus 330 will perform for all customers that are within the operational limits of the equipment, and will perform in all winds that are suitable for operations. Others will also. So I find that statement to be a little far fetched. Sometimes the winds at 3-4 k are stronger than 25-30 knots while the landing conditions are less then 15 knots. A smaller canopy will help you alot in these conditions. Nobody (in their right mind) enjoys going backwards. A 365 or 389 etc etc. are too big for some conditions that are operable, at least for me (75kg) anyway. hmmm, I wonder whatr files these produce, sounds similar to go pro but not as wide. might be good for outside video.... "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix
