We should also remember that if the reason for the PC in tow is a uncocked PC, even a pull out system may not have the bag lifted from the container until the reserve deploys, so no difference in that scenario. A pull out system doesn't eliminate the PC in tow. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I thought I had already posted this in this thread, I was wrong. Quite right, an entanglement can happen in with either procedure. I have read so many times in threads about which is best, and so many people are so sure that cutting away first will prevent an entanglement. They state this conclusion as if it is so obvious. It is discouraging that they can't imagine that the main and risers being pulled past a deploying reserve can also entangle. In every thread on this subject in the past 3 years I have sought to remind them that it is not a settled issue, and to see past their quick assumptions. So many are under the delusion that cutting away first will prevent an entanglement. Of course it does not, the entanglement can happen either way, just differently. New Saddam Documents Detail Terror Training
sundevil777 replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
I think making stuff up in an attempt to get international support for the invasion of Iraq is wrong. Don't you? Yes, that would be wrong. Is that what you think Clinton did also? He didn't invade, but it was official policy to pursue the overthrow of SH's regime. He wasn't effective at it, but it was policy. PC in tow ? mal, from the incident thread.
sundevil777 replied to NelKel's topic in Safety and Training
Line stretch and the bag opening happen simultaneously, so you wouldn't notice. If you watch a video of a bag lock mal you'll see that it does, maybe if the PC is not cocked it would not. Why is mine rescue equipment so crappy
sundevil777 replied to sundevil777's topic in Speakers Corner
Why is it put in such either/or terms? I think that obviously both are needed (prevention and rescue capability). At the risk of sounding like I did in a previous thread , I think that your tertiary reserve analog is lousy. If reserves really were pieces of crap, then why not just conclude that we need to concentrate on making the main more reliable and stop focusing on the need for better reserve canopies. I think analogies usually suck at explaining what people are trying to say. If tanks of air were stationed at key locations, they would not have to be dangerous in a roof collapse scenario. If the roof fell in, and broke open a cylinder, it is probably going to be covered in the material anyway. Of course the cylinders would have the caps to protect the valve, and could be in a sturdy cabinet of sorts. It is a low tech, high reliability system, with the cost proportional to the spacing of the cylinders along the mine. Why is it that rescuers are so incapable of having more air for themselves? The miners carry a system providing them with an hour of air, but the rescuers obviously can't get to them in an hour. That is pathetic. Why is it such a stretch of budget and imagination for rescuers to be able to carry/cart/hose/whatever more air with them as they are searching? But it would be so expensive...the money is better put toward prevention...Bullshit I say. The earlier comment about how the mine workers union is apparently OK with the current status of rescuer capability is valid. They truly are the group that should be the advocate for miner safety and should be promoting better capability. I am VERY surprised that so many are so willing to dismiss the need for something better. Why not just post what you would have said, and decide for yourselves if/when the operator would have cut you off. How would anyone know if the call actually happened unless you told us? Everyone that wants to see your comedy writing skills can just pretend that it did actually happen. I just don't see how the transcript alone would be so funny. At least the service wouldn't be used for intentionally inappropriate purposes. I think you and Jan are not considering that it is possible, I think, to be wrong about the pin being pulled with a pull out system, as I posted just above. Trial and error 101 1. Pack your pull-out the regular way (i.e. with the pilotchute inside the container losely on top of the main bag) 2. NOW close the container with a temporary locking pin in stead of the straight pin that is attached to the base of your pilot chute... 3. Gear up. Lay down on a creeper, grab your pud and pull...

PC in tow ? mal, from the incident thread.
sundevil777 replied to NelKel's topic in Safety and Training
As you said, the debate centers on the fact that many times a PC in tow will stop 'towing' when the reserve is opened, because of reduced tension on the container, thus there is a risk of a simultaneous deployment and entanglement. The chance for problems with a 2 out situation must be balanced against the chance for the departing main to snag the reserve. It is not a settled issue on which is best, but I favor not cutting away. Please read; http://www.performancedesigns.com/docs/dualsq.pdf and this is a decent thread dealing thoughtfully with the subject (of course my posts are the most thoughtful: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=597809#597809 People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Why is mine rescue equipment so crappy
sundevil777 replied to sundevil777's topic in Speakers Corner
I heard that the rescuers could only go in for 4 hours at a time because that is all the air tanks could accomodate. Pretty crappy that they can't think of some way for them to get more of a supply. There are so many ways to imagine getting a longer term air supply to a group of rescuers. And all the waiting that they did before seriously trying to get far into the mine, didn't change a thing from what I can tell. They spent a long time to confirm the air was crappy, and it didn't change a thing except to allow the guys to slowly die, then they just went in to the mine where the crappy air was still crappy with their inadequate rescue equipment. I'm probably being too harsh, but it just seems like so weak a response with such poor rescue aids, when it would seem so easy to do (provide longer term air supply to rescuers). I hope there is more to explain this than I know. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Did they move the landing area? What you circled in your first pic isn't where it was when I was there. edit - maybe they did move it, the old landing area by the runway looks awfully brown and awful. The grass there was always so great, hanging out under tall trees while packing on grass right next to the action... Ever done this 1,300 miles into a 1,400 mile trip
sundevil777 replied to dustin19d's topic in The Bonfire
Depending on the airbag system, it might have sensors that detects deformation in certain locations and will only fire if at least one of them is triggered. A really sturdy brush guard could require a more severe crash to get the bags to fire. There are also impact/acceleration sensors as part of the system. What altitude? I'm assuming you went out of the king air, and that the airspeed was really high, correct? Maybe it is better to just agressively roll out in a low, crouched position, and not to bother facing forward. Maybe asking the pilot to give a cut, even if that means a slight descent rate is needed would be even better. I'm so glad you didn't pull your main handle through the strap, nice thinking to realize that was your situation. A post by someone else said that the 'walk of shame' back to the hanger would be the worst part of their first reserve ride. I sure wish that was the worst thing to fear when I started. The worst thing was the knowledge of how an opening with risers attached at your belly would bend you backwards (especially if at terminal), and the knowledge that the 24 foot 'hi-porosity' piece of shit reserve would slam you down on the ground with little ability to avoid cactus. And don't forget having to figure out a 4-line release during the short ride down. I bring this up because the small reserves back then really did leave us with the knowledge that we might land softer under a partial malfunction than under a fully inflated reserve. That is a terrible thing to have as part of your thought process as you are faced with decision time. At least this is no longer something that modern jumpers face.
