  1. But their "shape" (ie: presentation into the resisting force, ie: relative wind) is different. -No? Therefore, the prof's considerations seem (at least to this non-physics professor) to be applied correctly and perfectly valid. Or is there something else in my observation of your 2's debate over this that I am still missing?? -Grant Of course the shape is different. But because the BC depends on the mass of an object, as you change the mass, the shape would have to change from the original state in order for the BC to remain the same (as mass changes). 2. Do you mean 'back' or 'head' into the wind for the freeflyer? The head into the wind (head down) freeflyer will get more forward throw, everything else being equal, because they present less drag in a head down orientation - the forward speed from the plane will take longer to bleed off. 3. We most certainly have a plan to attack Iran. That is one of the things our military must do, be prepared. When such contingency plans become public, they can be mistaken for something that was given a green light. The US military is extremely good at what they are supposed to do. 4. Now you're splitting hairs, my answer was implicitly no. Come on now... Your analogy is lousy because you don't know which BC is higher, it depends on both the mass and Cd. 6. I don't, why do you assume I do? I do say that the comparison of the same person (or thing) exiting in different positions (different drag) is the most useful comparison, it most clearly gets across the point that must be understood for people to realize what you've been trying to get them to understand for so long about exit order. I'm on your side, you've done so much good in this regard. I don't understand the trouble. The comparison of a dart and birdie is not so useful, because someone can say, correctly, that the answer depends on their mass - an unusually heavy birdie could still go farther. Indeterminate. Yes, it depends on the BC. Since you have fixed the mass, the answer can differ according to their Coefficient of drag. The one with the higher BC Only to the extent that it affects their BC. Same answers. That was an easy test, what does it prove? People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 7. Because that is the most useful comparison for explaining how a free vs bellyflyer will travel after exiting. Their masses don't have to be identical, but it makes the best analogy. Kinda like saying, "Everything else being equal". A person not so knowledgable can relate to the comparison of the same person exiting in a different orientation, that the trajectory will be different. Why do you focus on ballistic coefficient, it muddles the comparison to make it useless. 9. The point of the discussion, was to show that a freeflyer will travel farther along the direction of flight than a bellyflyer. The use of an analogy with objects of different drag and mass was not as useful as an analogy that only dealt with different drag. 10. Yes, but the BC depends on mass, so the shape would also have to change for your statement to be true. A dart has a lower coefficient of drag than a birdie. Its BC will also depend on the mass, so that a really heavy birdie could have a higher BC. 11. I wouldn't argue any such thing about spaceballs. You are the one that offered an analogy that I said was slightly flawed and would be better if changed as I suggested. Instead of saying that my assertion was wrong, you change the subject. It was only slightly flawed. Engineers and physics teachers like us pick on this stuff all the time, to find the slight flaw in someone's assertion. A lot of people find that trait to be irritating. 12. No it wasn't. Two items with the same shape that vary only in mass, given an initial velocity will slow down differently, because the acceleration = drag force/mass. So mass does matter, but I never said it 'predicts anything by itself'. It does not mean that I think it should be considered for exit order, just that your initial analogy was slightly misleading, because I would think that a badminton birdie is both lighter than a dart and has a higher coefficient of drag. So if you qualify your analogy by saying that both have the same mass, that is a better comparison to a belly vs freeflyer. The trajectory is determined by the ballistic coefficient. Two objects with the same ballistic coefficient have the same trajectory regardless of mass. An object with a high BC will go farther than one with a low BC. A dart has a high BC, a birdie has a low BC. A headdowner has a high BC, a belly flyer has a low BC. The analogy was fine. And that is that. Regardless of mass? The ballistic coefficient depends on the mass. In order for the BC of an object to stay the same as you change the mass it would have to change shape. The ballistic coefficient (BC) is the mass of the object divided by the diameter squared that it presents to the airflow divided by a dimensionless constant that relates to the shape. The BC of a dart or a birdie depends on the mass, and your analogy was not so great because they have such a different mass. And that is that. 17. True, but I think the result would be the same, if only less obvious. If the birdie were much heavier than the dart, it could go farther. But no need to split hairs further... 20. What limits the gov't puts on broadcast TV is certainly censorship. It is still a very trivial censorship, given that it only applies to broadcast TV, so I hardly think it is worth much protest. There were only slightly different limits of what was allowed before conservatives regained power. The extent of Conservativephobia is showing. If Amazon and others want to change the limits of what is allowed, such as less violence and more sex or whatever, they can avail themselves of the political process in support of that cause. What programs a company chooses to sponsor is not censorship, in my opinion. Lobbying a company to change their choices is also not censorship, in my opinion. Big Difference. 21. Many different opinions that can vary depending on your canopy, but I think that you'll usually go farther with the wind if you hold some brakes or rear risers. For going into a really strong wind that has you going backwards it may be best to use front risers to increase your forward speeed and reduce your time in the air (going backwards). I think an important thing for you to remember is to always know the direction the wind is coming from based on landmarks. You should never have a downwinder just because you can't see a wind sock. If the wind is so slight that it doesn't matter, then it is easy, but you should always know the general wind direction and how to align your out landing. Sometimes picking your landing spot right away is best, it might be safest/away from obstacles or near a road for easy hitchiking. Other times you can glide back a long way before needing to commit to your landing spot. 22. A company choosing with whom they associate is hardly censorship. Like when people advocate to eliminate subsidies for the National Endowment for the Arts because of some of the awful things they have sponsored, or the government subsidy of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, that is labeled as censorship by liberals. It most certainly is not censorship, it is just advocating the removal of support from tax dollars. Why is it that public radio and TV still gets away with the claim that they are non-commercial? They have lots of commercials, with slogans and everything. Somehow they still claim purity and freedom from corporate influence. Just because their commercials are shorter than most doesn't make them any less a commercial. edit - I love South Park, great social commentary! 23. I know you're not from Germany, but they ban certain speech and even symbols related to their past. That is real censorship. The rating restrictions on broadcast TV at certain hours of the day may well be silly in their detail application, but it is hardly censorship worth the description, "bordering on the insane". Quite a difference. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 24. My method is slightly different but much easier. No need for glue. Put the 'joint' in the larkshead where there is little tension, they've never pulled apart. I make my own tube stows from the bulk silicone tubing you can find in the fishing/sporting goods section of any department store (really cheap per foot). Use a pair of needlenose pliers to turn one end over about 5mm. Insert the closed pliers into the other end and open the pliers to expand the tubing. Now take a pair of hemostats (sp?) or similar instrument used for other purposes to grab the turned over end of the tubing and insert it into the opened end. Carefully slide the tubing off the pliers and you're done. No need to glue anything. 25. There is no 'backup utility', just the 'system restore' which just makes a restore point on the existing hard drive. It doesn't allow you to chose a different location/drive for the restore info/data. The program I saw at Circuit City seemed to be part of Windows, under a "PC tools & help" program name. I went there to check out external hard drives, and the girl suggested that for my needs burning a disk with this program would be sufficient, which seems right. Thanks again for your help.
