The news this week mentions that in georgia schools that appears to be a BAD word!! (Evolve)

Yeah, I will rent the dvd just to see that! wow lots of work put into filming it....

We just caught this movie on the big screen here in Sarasota. I was sure surprised that it was back in the theaters! It is out on DVD now, but if you can see it this size you will be blown away by the quality of the camerawork. Birds are so incredible, flying for weeks to travel 1600 miles to a summer home... and then heading back a few months later! And to remember the route! For all of us who live for learning how to use our bodies to move through open skies and among the clouds, this movie is FANTASTIC!

actually, he has a huge tatoo of barney on his back!!
-
oh yeah, they love getting that neck scratched! It's still a weird feeling scratching/petting a bird between the shoulders and neck like you would a dog or cat! Here's another one: when we are all watching tv and there's a romantic scene, she will call out "Kiss!"

Alright, another Grey owner! cool! Here around Sarasota and Central Florida are many many parrot breeders. Parrots may be disappearing in their native habitat, but there are plenty hatched around here! When you look at the photos, all those greys look the same, but I am sure that the personalities would be different to certain degrees. It is amazing how they all like to imitate the phone ringing and answering 'hello', those beepbeepy car alarms, and they do like to mimic other birds... I put a bird feeder right outside the window by the cage so during the day Amor can hear her winged friends and learn to imitate them. Her Blue Jay call is raucous and so is her crow squack...She imitates the hound dog down the block... One day we came home and when she got onto my hand, gave me a hearty 'YO!'....There was some road work being done on the corner and she picked that up.... Oh yeah, Sarasota has lots of those Quaker/MonkParrots (like the ones in the Barcelona article link above) flying around in flocks. They like to squack to each other as they fly, you can hear them as they fly through the neighborhood...

oh my god, that was amazing! thanks for finding that link! I remember reading Sheldrakes web site soon after we got our grey. I am going out tomorrow to buy one of those talking toys with big buttons! although amor would probably prefer destroying it rather than playing and learning!

Any Spyderco or Benchmade knife owners among the skydivers?
marcandalysse replied to peacefuljeffrey's topic in The Bonfire
Man, this one surprised me more than the posts about guns...although,as you say, And those blue handled knives were amazing....But what do you all mean by 'daily carry knife'?? I could see having one of those hook knives mentioned..... But 'peacefuljeffery', what is your 'peaceful' motivation for such a large collection? Just curious, not being sarcastic here guys... marc -
The first time that a cat or dog gets bit on the nose by a parrot, they will learn to keep their distance! Don't know if I posted this one before.... A friend who had a tatoo/piercing parlor stopped by, and admiring our parrot, put Amor on his shoulder. He explained that he once had a couple parrots himself and knew all about handling them. Well, maybe not, because amor took one look at the shiny ring in his eyebrow just inches away, and took a yank on it! Almost pulled it right out of his head!

That's a great foto! Did you check out that video link? Yeah their ability to imitate sounds is amazing. Microwave sounds, phone ringing...one time we didn't answer the phone because we thought it was Amor faking us out, then realized it was real! Alysse asks if your's is spoiled. They say that Greys have the intelligence of a 5 year old kid, but the emotional tantrums of a 2 year old... Here's a couple of photos of Amor. It's weird to watch her eating a chicken bone, seems almost cannibalistic! Anyone else out there have an African Grey??

I walked a 900 mile ancient pilgrimage path in Japan. Took me 7 weeks. Lots of good tips already. Get good boots and break them in on small hikes. I even walked on the treadmill with them when weather wouldn't let me outside. Take lots of water Take lots of moleskin for blisters and put it on at first sign of irritation. As suggested, do some short overniters with full pack. Have fun! I miss the mountains! Florida weather is great, but it sure is flat around here. That's why I like that view from 13K!! alysse's going to join in and say Phish Food, no doubt about it! Ever had it in those fish shaped ice cream bars really good! Skymama, did you mean to say you've never tried a ben and jerry's icecream?? There are too many tasty flavors for me to decide my favorite....You are missing a whole world of high caloric delights! And its 80 degrees out here perfect icecream weather!!

i went to school (U of MN) through one winter in minneapolis. my apt was colder than imaginable. I complained to my landlord. He said "what do you expect, its the coldest winter in 50 years!" Yeah, right, I thought.....I had always heard about MN winters and had been expecting the worst. Turns out, it WAS the COLDEST winter in 50 years! (around 1977) -
interesting, this miniseries traffic, I thought it refered just to the drug trade, but they just got a container load not of drugs, but of illegals off the pacific northwest....how often do you get 'boat people'??

B-52s under the Circus Sarasota Big Top!
marcandalysse replied to marcandalysse's topic in The Bonfire
No not the airplanes! The best party band....have you seen them?? They are on their 25th year reunion tour, and they still ROCK the HOUSE! Or the Circus Tent as it happened Saturday nite!! and only a couple miles up the road from our place! For those of you who don't know Sarasota, it got its world fame when the Ringling Circus moved here for winters from 1920s to 1960s, and there are lots more circuses still around. You can watch the lady lion tamer train the bigcats at her ranch, and the high school kids can practice circus stunts at the tent on their grounds.... The B52s played under the Circus Sarasota's Big Top!! That was a first for them! (Luckily the circus cleaned up the elephant poop before the dancin' started!)... What's your favorite B-52s concert? Too bad they never released a DVD....but they will live on forever in Karaoke Land.... They will be in Universal studios in Orlando on Valentines Day, for my central florida buddies....let's go!! Galen lives down the road a few miles north of me. Well Galen it is warmer down here in my end of south Sarasota, and.... I'm embarassed to say it, but yes, my thermostat actually kicked on the air this afternoon.... Hey, but that's nothing compared to even further south's West Palm Beach and the SoBe boogie!! By the way, the B-52s were GREAT as always! So cool that I think I'll start a thread about them!
-
jmpnkramer, we shouldn't make our northern friends feel colder than they already are!! (I am typing this as I sit in my back yard in shorts and tshirt eating a fresh starfruit/carambola I just grabbed off the tree, after catching the last rays and watching the sunset)
