  1. holding a lit blow torch in one hand while searching through the boxes for a big firework with the other is exciting too!! just don't keep 'em so close to janine's place.... last 4th of july i think there were as many 'ground fireworks' as ones in the air! It's great fun!! And maybe Mr Happy Thoughts can lead us in one of his famous Magic Carpet Rides for New Years Day? See ya there, Marc
  2. the one I mentioned used in 'blue dragon' is correct for blue. or check the first charactor on the TsingTao beer bottle (blue island beer)... the one you have is correct for black. everything else is fine. by the way, of course that doesn't mean that anyone that can actually read it will understand it since its a skydiver saying....
  3. ZHills will have midnite jumps, although I will be too loaded by then.... They should have a well lit landing area, cause the Muff Brothers will be lighting up the sky with cases and cases of fireworks.....scary thought!
  4. funny thing is that in many ways today's japanese writing is closer to the chinese of 1000+ years ago, whereas modern china simplified many characters. So in a way, Written Japanese Characters (I am not including the 2 different Japanese phonetic alphabets-hiragana and katakana) are more like the 'queens english'....
  5. not really. when we talk about Japanese writing, we call 'em chinese characters (KanJi) too, cause that's where they came from..... we've had aome humorous posts before about people not getting the correct characters.... I suggest going to a few chinese restaurants and asking the cute waitresses... or stop in Barnes and Noble and look at a dictionary... heheh, actually I was just sitting outside in the yard reading some chinese writing from the 8th century (seriously, ask alysse she thinks its nuts!), those are characters most modern Chinese or Japanese couldn't even read....the story reads like science fiction... good to get into a different mind space since I aint at 13500 this afternoon!
  6. DO NOT USE THAT CHARACTOR FOR BLUE!! Check that site for the 'blue dragon' charactors. That is correct for blue. And the other one says 'Heaven' not 'sky' (although its close) The other pair means 'eternity' not forever (close again) There must be somewhere to find that. Check Japanese not Chinese sites for a better chance at getting the correct characters.... marc ps in japan they just call us 'skai daibas' I guess....
  7. hmm....I can think of a few garages with some VERY nice rigs hanging up....wouldn't mind getting one of those on sale!
  8. I had a couple of jumps too, with a certain crazy dz.commer who shall remain nameless, he wouldn't want anyone to know that we pulled off 13 pts and still opened high to enjoy the views of Tampa Bay and the warm weather! Too all of you freezing up north, time to visit ZHills! The muff brothers will be doing their usual dangerous pyrotechnics show this New Years Eve!! All the best to my cyberspace buddies on dz.com! Thanks for all the virtual FUN! Marc "The reason angels can fly is that they take themselves so lightly." --GK Chesterton
  9. my 2 cents worth: when I first started in the sport, and first discovered dz.com, it was extremely hard to separate the safe advice from the BS. At the DZ, plenty of folks were offering 'advice', with both low and high jump numbers experience. (anyone with over a few hundred jumps seemed like a skygod to me!) I listen to it all, but my ultimate authority is my original aff instructor and currently my coach, plus some of the other coaches at the DZ. She knows my jump history, my continual problems in form and my continual progress. If she tells me to be careful about someone's advice, she has a good reason. Every few months we do a few coach dives for her to access my progress. Besides, its not that one person is correct, other incorrect. You will hear conflicting advice and both may be 'correct' for someone or another. Its a question of what style fits best. I learned one style of mantis turns from one coach, another variation from another. Then I made the choice of what was working best for me. There's always good stuff to learn and some truly fine instructors/coaches. And at ZHills I am truly fortunate to learn from some of the best anywhere. But truly, there are some scary posts coming from low jumpers, and most of us know who they are. I wouldn't want to be on a jump with them! Or maybe even on the same plane! Marc
  10. what the.....! You should be drinking batida de frutas naturais at Praia de Futuro in Fortaleza! Or drinking sake at my sister's restaurant Kingyo in Aldeota..... ??
  11. hey with a name like skygod??? I'd be too intimidated to approach you actually there are so many of us dz.commers at zhills around the bomb squad table, just walk over and say hi! and welcome to jerm, and Bo should be around here somewheres
  12. The great ladies from US women's skydiving Team Synchronicity will do a tunnel camp in the springtime in Orlando....Alysse and I already have reserved our slots!!
  13. Oi meu, tudo bom? Does the pilot have radio communication with the airport below? They should be clueing him in on changes in weather....If the clouds look that bad from above, come down with the plane....It is not fun going through rain and hail! Feliz Natal! Marc
  14. that is a cool site! Thanks for the link!
  15. Happy Birthday Ivan! Cheers and Applause, give him a HAND! (and some kittens?) marc
  16. maybe the boy is a skydiver?? "The reason angels can fly is that they take themselves so lightly." --GK Chesterton
  17. Too much mythologizing! I heard it was because Earth Day is April 20 but Earth Day is april 22.....hmmm Here in Sarasota Florida, some guys just opened up an all night restaurant called "Munchies 4:20 cafe". It's open from 4:20pm till 4:20am. They were looking for a place to eat one nite and only found Dennys and IHOP, so decided to open an all nite cafe.. for their fellow 'heads'
  18. nice to hear some brazilian capoeira percussion to start things out! fun video, thanks for sharing! marc
  19. That's why I moved to Florida 10 years ago! No more scraping ice off the windshield at 6:30am then fighting traffic to drive to work! The most work I have to do is bring the orchids into the garage, and cover the rest of the tropical plants with some old blankets if it gets below 40....The orange and grapefruits like the chill, it makes them sweeter! The pool is heated to 87 but with that chilly 60 degree breeze we have a solar cover on it....but its not too much work to roll it up and dive in! Rough life huh?? 20. Its really windy today too! Sarasota weather says will have gusts up to 40mph! When I went out for lunch, I faced into the winds and got into a standing version of mantis postion to see how much wind I could 'push'....hehehe....good thing I'm going to the windtunnel Friday nite....
  21. I was surprised when people clapped after a winning race in the seabisquit film.....but to me it shows the movie is doing its job working the audience emotions. Remember, in the days before big tv screens and dvds, the movies were an intensely social scene, people would dress up and share a moment together cheering on the hero or hissing at the bad guy... I saw Kill Bill and was the only one in the theater, and the vibe was definitely different! That's the fun of being in a huge dark space with a crowd of strangers, all laughing together crying together....I agree about the 'talking to the screen' comments and it seems to be a cultural thing...
