Alysse, who is an architect here in Florida, says that no house built to FL hurricane regs will withstand over 140mph winds. Storm shutters mean little when, as posted last year on a thread, a tree trunk flies through a roof or wall. As for evacuating, last year the hurricane that hit Lake Wales and orlando looked like it was aimed at sarasota. Friends called from Orlando offering a place to stay. Sarasota's island residents evacuated to Arcadia, a half hour to the east. The hurricane bypassed sarasota, hit Port Charlotte to the south, entered inland, took the roof off the shelter in Arcadia, and knocked out Orlando's power etc. We barely felt the storm passing us. But yeah, cat 4 or 5.....we'd get the hell out of the entire southeast if possible. marc

Happy Birthday to the Blue God Krishna! We are at a friend's house watching live India satellite TV, the celebrations for Krishna's birthday. There must be 100s of thousands of people there. They have a competition where they form human pyramids of dozens of people to try to reach a gift up on a pole. People are dressed in monkey costumes and like Hindu gods and kings, and dancing girls on stage doing bollywood song and dance. I eat tofu in many forms, had some in my lunch salad today. I eat chocolate in many forms. Had a hot chocolate with breakfast. But chocolate tofu cake??? Well.....maybe.... marc

It's no joke! Here in Sarasota, all the main streets turn into rivers! And the side streets? One big swamp! A couple of years ago, before the county put in new drainage pipes under the road, we had some real flooding on our corner after the tropical rains. I have a photo of 4 of the neighborhood kids canoeing down the street past my place. Hang in there neighbors! My mother just called and the winds are battering the trees in Boca Raton as I type....the storm is moving so slowly that they will get really soaked! My friends saw the Beatles play at Red Rocks a loooong time ago. We got teargassed there watching Tull in early '70s...
