I bought the wife a Garmin last christmas, guess I could just steal that for a few days. I thought it would need to be some kinda hiking specific but I would imagine as long as it has elevation and coordinates it'll work eh. ...compass and map? New hiker, did Mt. Whitney last year (simple as far as established trail..), have a good start as far as gear, lots of mountain trails around my home. I like the solo thing for the most part and want to get into some "off the beaten path" areas. But I dont want to get lost I like the idea of old fashioned compass and map, maybe gonna find a class(?) for that but whats up with the GPS? Use one? Suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Its funny that yesterday morning we lost one of our "regulars" in my reponse area (and came home to this thread). We call it "woke up dead". You get to know some of these people and really care for them and you do what you need to do, the humorous banter kicks in and you move on to the next one. It does relieve a lot of the stress but it really must be controlled (hard to do some times). Some of the hospitals have family hanging out right near the ambulance bays and that gets pretty bad sometimes. from my experience its usually (but not always) the youngsters laughing and carrying on not paying attention. As far as the skydiving thing, I dont make jokes about death so much, dont want to infringe on YOUR juju. I have a kind of unique situation sometimes, I work overtime shifts in Taft where I hear the crews commenting on dz calls, but they watch what they say if they know I know some of these folks (not often, but its happened). ------------------------------------------ The Dude Abides. -

Yeah I saw that after I read the story. Dang, 56... I remember hell I dont know, back in 82 when she was arrested for something or other and I was working on a big commercial building roof in Petaluma Ca. Cleaned em up, had to replace the tightening bolt (was corroded all the way through) on the neg side. Worked great
