  1. thanks for the explanation. your post makes a lot more sense now - your english is better than my (insert any other language here). Good luck another thought - if you remember. if a student gets a little head high and the instructor is holding square, then what would be a backslide can present as a strong and persistent turn (due to the instructor attached) and is difficult to square up without correcting the student's legs. But if he's turning 'towards' you, then this would be a hard forward slide, not a backslide. (that would be unusual while the backslide is very common). either way where were his feet. I suspect you already know this... ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  2. kind of a tangent, but It's funny, I've been finding that when we present it correctly, a "relax" signal results in a better arch than any "arch" signal. ... 3. Where do you teach and what type of training, if not officially AFF, do you guys teach? There might be translation issue in the post so I'm trying understand what's going on here. 1 - you ran an AFF course for new guys (so you are doing Cat A's, and maybe Cat B's if they stick around for another jump) 2 - "Level 2" ??? Do you mean Cat B? If so, normally that's 2 jump masters - though I understand some modifications happen, especially with DZs with tiny planes... 3 - So you have a student in a controlled and strong turn while you are docked..... a - he's flat, so not arched, that can generate a lot of force b - stretching out your legs? countering a turn involves flying, digging a knee, driving, etc etc. also getting big and flat doesn't seem to be a good understanding of body flight c - correcting an arm position to counter a turn? ok, if his arms are incorrect, this is fine, but at this point it sounds like you were guessing d - not able to give a signal......sometimes that happens, but when they are turning into you, rather than away, there more opportunity to give signals and still control the student e - "pulled' his handdeploy.....the verbage here is awkward, I'm questioning the whole post, sorry, lots of little indicators that make me skeptical. again, maybe it's just semantics f - hand deploy? not a fan of this, but I understand some DZs do use it for 'new guys' For the instructor - I think going to a tunnel and doing 'push pull' drills will help you develop more options to be much stronger with your students when needed. Maybe also consider using your head and arms for leverage to maintain control while allowing you to give hand signals. For the student - if you can't release, then you need a couple 'signals' that can be used with your student - shaking them for arch. Emphasize how important it is to get clear eye contact so you can add smile and sticking out your tongue as a signal for them to 'relax into an arch'. If he's flat and flight is bumpy, seriously look at his legs, wide knees (that then cause a little dearch or a flat body) is always a problem for many and affects how effectively they are able to arch.....probably the number one symptom of someone not comfortable.... someone who's knees gets wide and he tenses up when he's uncomfortable is also someone who's problem will get worse and worse as his natural reaction is then counterproductive. ... 4. Huge difference between expecting responsibility from someone vs holding someone criminally complicit for the actions of another person. And again - where does the line get drawn in how much security is responsible vs irresponsible? I'd like to know the consensus on that one.... I'll start - "What I do is absolutely responsible and necessary. Anything less than what I do per my subjective opinion is clearly not." ... 5. no - the gun owner is responsible for being careless the thief for stealing it that's about as far as I agree with you but the gun owner is NOT responsible for the following crimes in any way shape or form. He was only responsible for being careless. cite him for contributing to the theft of the gun and that's the line - maybe he'll press charges against himself.... big difference having it stolen vs providing it illegally - trying to equate them isn't logical at all (How do you reply to the rape analogy then: If the initial rape victim wore a sexy dress is she now also complicit in any following rapes too I guess....?) ... 8. exactly - the surprising part is that people are arguing "no, they really are different" and taking such amazing exception to the comparisons, drowning in the Kool Aid the surprising part is not recognizing certain facts: 1 - that people are pretty similar, and 2 - politicians are the same and 3 - the whole party line stuff is a joke and an act and a huge waste of energy - (represented by just about any thread in this forum for sure - yet despite that, I continue to contribute just to pass some time anyway, so there you have it) ... 10. so for guns - do you disassemble them and then lock up the various parts in separated concrete foundation vaults that are all at least a mile from each other? Do these vaults require both retinal and fingerprint scans, with a password? (oh boy, if you do this, this post will backfire) I do what I consider reasonable (rifles in a locked rack in a non-visible area, ammo locked separately, handgun in a safe, also located in a private area - you tell me, is that satisfactory? probably, you are reasonable about this stuff, but for some, there is zero level of security that they would accept- including the above - other than non-ownership - how do you talk to those types?) Blanket accusations that irresponsible ownership is defined by whether or not the property was stolen or not, is a crappy strawman. of course - I'm not counting my "TV" pistol. That stays loaded and on the coffee table for when I can't find my TV remote and I need to shut off the TV or shoot out a light. ... 13. I think this is discussed in another thread, but I'm too lazy to do the search. The key point here is the OC's strength and his ability to launch clean and crisply with a single right hand grip (left door like an Otter). (Also, some planes have a LOT more wind force on jump run and that might change this aspect on a case basis. consider the push between climbout on an Otter - relatively easy, vs climbout on a caravan - more push) If the OC is able to do a strong exit without having the extra leverage the left hand on the bar provides, then I usually coach to OC takes that grip. That forward hand is a great advantage for tail and OC... Sometimes, especially on girl's teams, the OC is just working to stay out there. Launching forward and up and out can require quite a strong presentation (mainly with the strength in the right leg). In that case, not only do I minimize their leg motion on the count (swinging that leg out on 'ready' can unbalance that OC) I also consider giving the grip on H to the point so the OC can use that left hand. And then sometimes we might do it temporarily, even the strongest OC sometimes just feels unbalanced out there, then that left hand leverage on the bar is a temporary way to get them to re-establish their balance and stance and count. 1 - I prefer the OC take the grip on exit (it's what they do usually in the sequence so I like to keep the same) 2 - but it's no big deal if the point takes it on exit if the OC needs a bit of help the point should have no issue either way, frankly, provided the OC launches clean rather than weakly peel off. Point (for H) should be focusing on his orientation - and I find that comes from hipping/anchoring hip down a bit to counter any rotation from a weak exit. IMO his left hand shouldn't be a big consideration in his priorities. ... Redskins!

People getting all bent about a private organization changing their name. honestly, I don't see this as any different than 'churchy' types getting all bent about whether a girl's skirt covers her ankles vs her knees it's all a bit 'church lady' ish if you ask me - but people can say or feel what they like but when either of those flavor of groups start to say that laws and policy should be adjusted to address it, that's when the line is crossed ... if so, that's absolutely inappropriate as a governmental function. we don't need Big Brother making PC, or religious, or moral decisions for private company decisions and branding but nowadays I wouldn't be surprised - it falls over the line into theocracy type behavior and it seems some pigs would LOVE that ... Redskins!

Who says the Washington DC NFL team isn't allowed to be called Redskins? They are allowed to call themselves that, what they have lost is the ability to make a lot of money off the name. I agree. The Government should stay out of it. the only role of teh trademark and patent office should be to protect the unique names, not make any subjective value decisions on the submittals themselves. 17. if everyone knows what they are doing, roundabouts clearly are MUCH better. my only issues: 1 - stupid little PC communities thinking they are neat that build tiny ones that firetrucks, semis, etc can't navigate. self explanatory 2 - areas with tentative drivers that STOP at the wrong times. These people may be annoying at 4 way stops but are plain dangerous on roundabouts. 3 - asswipes that don't understand the right of way on them (however, they are also asswipes on 4 way stops too, so have consider this one a wash - in my area it's mainly soccer moms) ... 18. This is still quite restrictive, but it's about the closest thing I've heard of that matches what I'd LIKE to see happen everywhere. (But voluntarily as an individual choice). Owners need to be proficient in use, storage, cleaning, maintenance, safety,,,,,,,,, Used to be we learned it from our parents. And learned it well as part of the culture. Today, (urban areas), I wouldn't want most parents to own scissors........ as for who "gets" to be "given" a right - of course politicians get to have and do whatever they want - they are always "more equal" than the rest of us in their minds. 20. this is distressing that some pigs are more equal than others I prefer a system where every citizen has the same rights and opportunities to responsibly own property of their choice. Also one where each citizen gets to choose for themselves what level of risk their live entails. the less big brother, the better This is simply a feel good policy, IMO. So all a person has to do is lie and say the firearm is only for target shooting. That's just great. Apparently the firearm has a scanner and malfunctions at anything other than paper? 23. nonsense to both of you - it's about the right split matching the public's watching. It's more a statement that the market for left leaning watchers is bigger and thus that share of the pie is split up amongst more networks. when you have 1 right leaning network vying for 50% of the market, and 12 left leaning networks vying for the other 50% of the market, don't be surprised when 25% is the biggest share...... hell, since the share isn't the full 50%, is more a statement that most people don't really have a preference and just watch the news with the anchors with the biggest tits. No, the problem is the people proposing these erosions (Feinstein, HCI, etc) are all on record for their wish to eliminate all private weapons, and of their intent to do it incrementally if necessary. Sorry, Jeanne, I understand your take on it, but I lean more towards Kelp's read on it. The anti's are MUCH more fanatical and extreme and unreasonable about the issue.
