  1. that's not analogous at all - 1 - those positions were driven by threat from the establishment (religion at the time) 2 - GW is not treated like a faith based religions nowadays (snicker) 3 - scientists that fairly disagree today are not ostrasized or professionally damaged (snicker) like back then 4 - I doubt a scientist that doesn't follow the pack today at least won't be burned at the stake, (he might just get death threats and his car keyed up) 5 - Back then, people were fanatical about the flat earth, almost like dogma. We NEVER see alarmists getting hyper or over-reactive.... 6 - The churches collected a lot of money by making people follow the doctrine. Today, GW is not a money making industry at all. It's just concerned citizens that have no other political or social agenda..... it's not the same AT ALL ... 2. that's pretty much all the threads in Speaker's Corner. at least this one comes by it honestly - if not blindly I believe that for about 90% of the advocates - and that they are just being obtuse to the long term and overall economic negatives that would overwhelm any 'good intentions'. World is rife with well intentioned disasters by those with inability to think things through to the end. Or that are so falsely panicked that they will ignore long term to justify even the illusion of the short term benefit. (they would feed the bears at the park...) the other 10% I think are not so kindly minded ... 3. Some people here simply do not seem to understand the difference between facts and opinion. you mean like requesting "DATA" for a predictive social response to a hypothesized economic stimulus? you can't simplify the economic models, there's too much interference legislated into reality to get any worthwhile predictive result. All you can do is have a bunch of economists argue various alternatives and then pick whichever version your personal bias wants to choose to hear. ... 4. Much easier for some to extrapolate than others. Logic doesn't always prevail over hard biases..... Yup, and in that line of thought, every single Dem is the equivalent of the "Obama money" citizen. Glad that's all straightened out. ... 5. Sure - when they get off of the manufacturing line, every single one, without any exception, is exactly like the worst examples you've encountered in your life ya know, maybe they should hire and train people from the general population and then maybe cops will be motivated and varied just like real humans it's worth a shot ... 7. that's not the point of execution - it's not about what he 'deserves' or not. It's about removing the threat from society. That's what WE deserved your comment feeds the "all people want is revenge" comment - which is a silly tangent discussion tactic Okie screwed up - using drugs, etc and trying to make it 'palatable' to the public is a sop. IF we must execute, then it needs to direct and effective. Complex drug delivery system? chambers?....I don't see any of those being a practical and efficient way to do it. If we use a series of drugs, then they should be administered directly and each step of the process confirmed. When this stuff happens, suddenly the guillotine doesn't seem so brutal anymore. Or shots to the head. (private, no observers would be the way to go - it's carrying out a sentence, not putting on a show). (and no, the idea of closed vs open casket being indicative of cruel/unusual is a silly discussion, humane/typical should be strictly defined as quick/minimal pain) ... 11. This is something a private organization can do if legal and contractual. Good news. The government certainly can't do this kind of thing. (in otherwords, I'm thrilled to see the NBA's response, but if any gov department did the exact same thing for an internal analogous situation, I'd be outraged. I wonder who understand why.....suspect most here do - those that really do understand the difference between libertarians vs hard core dems/reps) great to see the private sector work to market responses as it should ... 19. silly statement kelp - "I'm now playing the race card" no kidding the player doesn't use the phrase, doesn't make it false.... if the other (honestly) feels it was done inappropriately, there are two positions also - he's right and it was done unfairly, or he's wrong and it's a difference of opinion. (note - I'm talking in general, no so much in context with the up-thread. I've stopped reading for some time - will try to catch up) edit: side note - to me, Bundy sounds like a recalcitrant old fart that has some specific deeply held beliefs about government, but is leveraging them for personal gain.....(convenient how deep philosophy seems to manifest when shored up with personal gain)......he also has some antiquated social notions that many do in that generation, that the rest of us have hopefully outgrown. the gov side of this is even worse in trying to make an example in a heavy handed manner that we should also all be very concerned to see emerging....no winners here. ... 20. sure, it identifies who cares or not, but it solves the other problem (with individuals, not the process owners - different problem) too illegal voters - 1 - multiple voting - can't do it unless they cut off a finger (Vote early, vote 10 times) 2 - illegal voters are now marked, easy to identify after they committed the crime However, I can't believe how insensitive you are to the thumbless challenged population, or recuperating patients in casts - I thought you cared about PEOPLE for that matter what about the liberals that want dogs and cats to be able to vote too? kinda shuts them down also, except for the genetic freak pets ... 22. I think the term is pretty much defined as using race as an argument when it is not applicable in reality. So no. However, when race is a legitimate input to an issue, it should be put out there in context as a real and valid point. Playing it to stifle the debate is WRONG Claiming that all the other guys are doing is playing the card - is just as wrong I believe both sides knee jerk to those actions way too much. I think that playing it too much has shut off productive discussion to a huge extent over the last couple decades such that most people have no clue even to what they are debating other than they don't want to win more so they just want the other guys to lose. I suspect people are well divided, though, on who is abusing their respective arguments more...... ... 24. totally agree that a private organization could do a world of good by encouraging responsible ownership and use of firearms. those programs do still exist though - they could score a lot of PR points, though, by emphasizing those services over the general stance in the media. to your 'silly' response - good examples the overregulation of a 'right' certainly can lead to abuse, that's why we need to minimize government interference so we don't see the mistakes of the past creep into what should be self managed rights would you want either party to have the ability to require a 'litmus' test of citizens prior to voting? I know some here would love it, but I don't think you would though, no matter passionate you are about certain topics. gun ownership - we seem to be approaching the point where I could easily see "Who did you vote for?" and "Did you have an ACA health care policy?" and "What is your gross income?" on the Purchase Permit application..... ...
