skydiving and rock climbing - I don't wear my ring ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

I certainly appreciate you taking the worst possible spin on my commitment, Andy here's an example from the cert course - "Hey, Bill. Do you want to know what he did to me on that last jump in case he does it to you?" my response "no, I'll take what he throws at me and deal with whatever it is" AFF certainly is a box of chocolates. Not musing on specifically defined scenarios doesn't equal not thinking about how to take care of my student. I'd rather spend time looking at the logbook and observing the training of my student and planning for what appears most likely to happen. Random scenarios are great for forum discussions and learning there. ... Do skydiving skills also keep you safer on the ground?

any newbie will tell you skydiving is composed of the greatest and most giving people on earth you can leave $10,000 in cash lying around at the DZ and it won't be touched - ever we're a super close family from all over and you crash in anyone's camper without asking it makes you more attractive it gives you superman-like reflexes it gives you 6 pack abs it makes you a better driver you smell better your parents are proud of you more than the others of course - old timers will tell you that it's just another sport and don't get so caught up in the fact that it makes you feel good from the endorphins of course - which will you believe? ... to be fair - if you want to characterize the "only cut spending and don't raise taxes on anyone" position are "pure" GOP. then you need to call the other side a "pure" DFL platform - not "more extreme" I think Bolas characterizes the real fiscally conservative position: cut dramatically and also raise taxes (but those raises occur via simplification of the tax code and elimination of subsidies to everyone in every income level - not just targetting a good sound bite by impotent taxing gestures) call it GOP, DFL, or PDQ or whatever..... ... this statement is true for some, not for others (if you were specifically calling Winsor a scaredy cat, but not all gun owners in general, I withdraw my statement, I don't know Winsor so cannot assess his level of relative spookishness) but so what? we're not descended from the brave monkeys that went out and attacked the saber tooth with sticks. we're descended from the survivors. you know, the little (smart and) trembly ones that ran and hid in the tree ... late last year, I'm riding through a Cat B opening (I'm on the reserve side) clean opening and student lifts up. I go to release the leg strap and, whooosh, there goes my glove out front after landing, the student walks up - there's the glove, neatly tucked under the leg strap it's weird what little things stick with you anyone? ... changed to my (recent) training we go to the reserve only in the event of a mal, (btw - we have a setup with a main handle on both sides - on the left is for the instructor only, and the normal main Ripcord on the right) main side leaves upon the pack opening (or the entire ripcord fully leaving the housing is another option) - reserve side rides through and deals with anything necessary - of course, with a single JM scenario - he stays and deals regardless of location I like this thread, I haven't mentally trained on scenarios of a mal for the student while I'm holding on - though we have a SOS on our student gear, so our options are simplified (as well as the student's) Now I am thinking on it and mentally practicing a bit ... It's a pretty petty thing to get worked up about. a few MPH here or there doesn't really matter much. I pretty much consider it a nice bonus when other drivers are paying attention to the traffic around them. But I don't expect it nowadays. ... haven't seen the movie for years, until two days ago when I was flipping stations and stopped on it for about 15 minutes or so - this scene included Ricardo M talks in nearly worse cadence than Shatner. Maybe you should do more somewhere in that, BV was comparing you, himself, and/or DanG to either William Shatner or Kirstie Alley (back when she was cute) you (or BV or Dan) can take that as a compliment or not I'm still not sure ... what? treat everyone the same? get the government completely out of something they don't belong in in the first place what kind of crazy talk is this? both items are the antithesis of government - who's job is to invade every single aspect of our lives and use it to give preferences to one group at the expense of the others (+1) ... Just go get instruction so we don't have to unteach you. Tunnel is good instruction AFF Class is good instruction trying to figure it out on your own or with a bunch of advice on DZ.com? not so much. It might work for some things (techniques for experienced jumpers, discussions on block moves), but I'm not a fan of it for 1st jump students at all. ... Don't lump me in with starting "Billvon's and HWT's" analogy. I came in 3rd, after you did. His was a snide comment. In your response, you were very much deceiving that little girl (more to a kid is amount, but we're talking percentages, not amounts). I think better of you than to deceive a poor helpless child. analogies are fun ... what problem? they know how to increase taxes, but it's worthless to increase revenue X amount if it always results in a spending increase of X+ and still - which 'sides' are you talking about? Let 'them' put a budget out that has spending levels at a much REDUCED level than the last few years, AND a tax increase for everyone and we have something. But all we hear is tax these guys, or those guys, more - but without any reductions in expenses.... The budget problem can only be fixed with less spending and more revenue. HOWEVER, today's issue is that the 'revenue' aspect of the solution creates a bigger spending problem than it fixes. Fix that, then we can bring both solutions to bear effectively. or, just keep digging Bolas has it right: 1 - reduce spending - drastically simplify the list of what we spend on. and then take that list and cut it more 2 - increase revenue - by simplifying the tax code - no more freebies for the 42% that don't pay anything - no more freebies for the super rich that bought themselves sweet tax arrangements to get off so easy. no penalties, not subsidies, nothing. keep it simple and take away everyone's breaks. see, I agree with billvon too. but to get there we need assurances more tits for everyone ... As I said in the part you didn't quote - I agree you, except I don't trust our current spending habits to fulfill both sides of the deal. so - they've demonstrated they are willing to always increase taxes, they need to demonstrate the other side of the coin (and, yes, it is a 'you first' position) else handing congress more tax revenue is like handing a drowning man a bag of lead ... my concern is much worse - an increase in taxes is always followed by a BIGGER increase in spending than the additional revenue taken in not flat, never a decrease in spending so we need to fix that problem first - then I'm all for doing both actions to dig us out of the hole, and taxing EVERYBODY, and taking away all the subsidies, penalties, loopholes, etc taxes should pay for the minimum required, and hot have any social experimentation involved either - minimum taxes (but enough to pay down our debt over time) and minimum expenses - not the max/max of today's world ... that's great in your ideal world, but Bolas has it right. Currently, raising 1M$ in taxes will just create 1.5M$ in more spending programs. THAT is what needs to be fixed first. ... Vote Livendive '12 "yeah, what he said" (you're in sync here - increasing revenue by eliminating special breaks and simplifying the tax code, making EVERYONE pay taxes - are all in the same category - "Tax to pay for necessities and not for social reconstruction" (which I think is the real message of the whole "cut spending" crowd) the rest of that was cutting - dramatically you got my vote ...
