agree here (if you exclude the Coaches) Like I said, Instructor or above. yeah, just want to be clear - Coach is called a type of "instructor" nowadays (sorry coaches, I also don't like the idea of the PRO rating and a couple other things too. doesn't mean there aren't some very good coaches out there) ... yeah, but the ones with the shame tend to hide it. give me the shameless ones with nothing to hide - "yeah, I did it, but I admit it and it can't be used to leverage me because you all know it already." "laying it all out there for the public to see" means exposing your real self and character so you don't have to hide anything. that's character to the public, not your junk to 20 somethings ... I don't know about Vitter, but if a 'lawmaker' knowingly broke laws - then he should go - period Weiner tried to hide his mistake and even appears to have been willing to hang some innocent other criminally. That means he's a very high risk to being blackmailed and his priorities are on his reputation, not the country. he should go. Is hacking illegal in this context (the false charge). If the hacking is illegal, then framing someone for that is also illegal and he'd be a crime breaker. he should go Edit: lawmakers should respect the law, even those they don't agree with. congress people don't have to be perfect, but they have to value being incorruptable over themselves for the good of national security - especially if it's just pissy stuff like legal, but goofy behavior ... not really - you only have to be open to the idea that it isn't provable one way or the other (by the way, to be religious, you also have to acknowledge that there is zero proof, and that your belief is entirely faith based - but few religious people are pure in their faith and tend to look for rationalizations. atheism is the only denial, but it's a reasonable position of denial in this case - even if it's obnoxious and smug) and/or just not care either way ... City: Keep parked pickup trucks out of sight overnight
rehmwa replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
BTW - in my neighborhood, we don't have side walks, and there are always cars parked in the street. I hate that. Kids end up walking either in the middle of the street, on on the lawns, etc. I'd like the street cleared personally. But I don't think it falls into government dictating it. if neighbors actually took the time to 'know' each other, usually, the things can be resolved just by walking over and talking. But, no, citizens want gov to solve anything, so they skip the courteous stuff and go straight to pushing a law that would have been more simply fixed with a polite request. hell - I had a little grit in my salad yesterday. Maybe instead of politely asking the waiter to replace it, I should have called 911, and then lobbied for a law to outlaw salad grit. for the children ... That's meaningless unless you state how far you'd go with pushing your "want". Is it your opinion that you don't like it? 1 - but that's the breaks as other people have the right to do as they wish with their property or; 2 - you'd join a home owners group of like minded people that have voluntary contracts in line with your wishes or; 3 - you'd push and vote to have the local government make it a law to force everyone else to comply with your desire on they should treat their own personal property which is it for you, personally? It's not cut and dried, someone ok with signage on nice clean trucks might have issues with the neighbors parking their RV in the front yard, or trash everywhere, etc. But for this scenario, let's say the trucks are all very nice, well maintained, clean....they just have signage on the doors/sides ... agree here (if you exclude the Coaches) and DZ's have retraining policies anyway - usually some ground work (thorough or cursory review depending on the individual and the lay off period) and then 'observe could be anywhere from observing the exit from the plane, all the way to doing a couple AFF jumps (again, "depending") I'd like to keep the judgment calls to the DZ or Instructor, personally. 5-2 implies that by not having any additional direction. They could just say it right out though "extent of recurrency training should be determined by the local DZO, S&TA, Instructor," ... Section 5-2 (recurrency) really does need to tie off with the ISP in some fashion. Or at least explicitly say they are leaving the details (what type of instructor, what does "observe" mean, etc) to the DZO or S&TA for each special instance....... I know that my very thin recurrency experience (over 10 years ago) and supervision for a 5 year layoff is something that I would NOT recommend today for someone in a similar position. ... "Less than stellar" can still be a reasonable pass. We don't require "perfect", just ability to solo and self supervise safely. Seems the implication is the AFFI didn't consider the student to be self supervisable, yet still passed them on. ooops I know you didn't imply that, I'm just clarifying for the others. 18 years is a long time - I'd recommend a heavy duty retrain. Expiring license? that's nuts. We have currency requirements that meet the need. ... I agree with Dave (as usual). the coach had two jobs we are questioning: 1 - pull at his pull altitude (which would have sent a strong communication to the student that it was pull time). Clearly a fail here as this is a defined job description for the role. 2 - A good gear check (x3) - coached students are supposed to be self-supervised - not a fail, as the other jumper is responsible and the coach is a backup - but still not a win at all for the coach, he failed on the backup (possibly, not so cut and dried and I didn't see the video) the AFF Instructor (1 thing) - 1 - testing the student as to readiness for self supervision. It sounds like the AFFI didn't think the student was ready - but passed him anyway. Clearly a fail here. Side commentary - One thing though - the only thing an AFFI has to go on for recurrency is one dive = the ground presence of the student (demo of knowledge and proficiency) and the air performance of the student on a SINGLE observed jump. He can absolutely pass that one dive on both counts and that means the student can be cleared, and then he can tank the next dives in spectacular fashion - and no one should be able to take the AFFI to task (none of us have crystal balls to the future). (of course, if the AFFI finds out that the student is unsafe after the fact, there is a responsibility to get the student back into training.....but that's not what we're talking about here) We do see a LOT of 20/20 hindsight judgmentalism on these boards. But not in this case. If the AFFI was concerned, then passing to a coach was clearly wrong. Lastly, re-currency jumpers can be the absolute worst - especially ones from 'back when' - they still think they know it all. Assigning a strong willed AFFI is a good idea here. ... thanks, W. so far, the Mizuno's are great (and there is a good model that's very reasonable and still sturdy.) sometimes, I could dig through a pile of Neumans and find a left and then a right at some point - their proportion are random, apparently. and they were pretty cheap - but the fingers started to come apart usually in less than a month. cheap thread. so not worth it. I'm sure your fingers and hands are dainty and female. I will brook no talk otherwise from a friend. As you know, men like women with small hands for a variety of reasons. ... I had 3: Slow Speed (1988) - tangled steering line CrW Wrap (1990 ish)- Karl 'said' his steering line got caught in his finger right before he wrapped me from the side. It was fun. High speed (2005 ish, maybe?)- afterwards found a slip knot in the bridle that caught the PC a bit - if it was there during the mal, it explains it. Lazy PC snatch due to partial inflation. short answer - I pack fast, but try to keep my bridle and lines stows neat ... I always wear thin batting gloves. Keep a pair in each helmet (RW, FF, Camera) so I don't have to look for them. Mizuno's fit my hand shape best. Finding a brand to fit your hand is the toughest part. But proportions tend to track with brands. Most gloves seem to fit people with fat palms and stubby fingers - so my search took a while. Easy to find affordable batting gloves on the internet, but recommend going to a sports store to try on a bunch of brands to figure out which fit best. ...
