Coming from the tip of a douchenozzle. I can't keep up with your razor wit. How do you achieve such subtlety and nuance? this is quite the sophisticated banter from two guys relying on the phrase "douchenozzle" to make their point ... As an AFFI, it's hard to not go to them, pull for them, and keep giving signals hoping for awareness. But if it's a coach jump.....then we need to be in coach role. I agree wholeheartedly with the quote above. And I can't really think of any exceptions right now. and that really does includes this specific scenario also (sorry, Jen). Plan the dive, dive the plan - that goes for RW and FF, CrW, big ways, AND teaching dives. Jen - pretty brave of you to put this out there for everyone - it's clear that you are trying to do the best for each student from your perspective. Thanks. ... baggy vs tight - well, I disagree with you here, IMO. the only 'wider' range you are getting is on the slowing down end (but you might need that) - and the ability to wear more stuff under the suit you are trading off flapping material (which might be very much needed) for smooth airflow (very much desired) - flapping material sheds little vortices constantly which is much like flying around while gremlins are randomly pushing at you all the time. Let alone the occasional factor when a segment just simply grabs a chunk of air and tosses you. the tight suit gives much more control - you are flying your body - than the baggy suit where the suit is trying to fly you every freefly suit I've ever bought has been more and more form fitting, and each time, my skill level has gone up immediately as a step function. Same thing happened in the RW suit evolution. that said - some people just really need that extra drag and HAVE to sacrifice performance to get the drag they need before considering just a big floppy suit, I encourage fast fallers to go with multiple layers and higher drag materials first and try to maintain as best they can a more streamlined fit ... yeah, but I think the bigger worry (warranted or not) is people will see you going to hawaii and saying "That's not FAIR" and they'll want to take your 401K to pay for old people (like mirage62) to eat and have a place to crash. It's only fair, now you both can eat and have a place to sleep. You shouldn't have been so selfish to actually invest your own money for your own retirement. What were you thinking? ... +1 and then, now that we show we are serious on the little stuff - also go after the big 4 (medicare/caid, SS, military) But the Tea Party talking heads are targeting this small stuff like it's relevant, knowing full well that their ignorant followers are clueless about the real pachyderms in the room. I didn't think you and I were talking about the tea party. just cutting spending everywhere - the big stuff AND the little stuff. that's a culture change we need in government As for the tea party - A group of outraged fiscal conservatives was a great idea. Too bad the social fringe hijacked a good idea and changed it to just the same old version that mirrors the other social fringe. Social activism (of both stripes) = spending without regard. In a nation of (supposedly) individualism, social acts should be private, not mandated. "morally praiseworthy" activities must be voluntary. "morally obligatory" attitude is the only thing law should address. and that list is a hell of lot shorter and doesn't really cost a lot of money at all compared to what's in play today. ... +1 Serious cuts are needed and the first priority. The only tax increases should come as a result of simplifying the tax code dramatically. Eliminating subsidies and write offs and making the existing rates 'real' rates, not just the mythical rate that everyone can weasel out of. And they should target everyone, not just some out of favor group. And, EVERYONE should have to pay something as well. the simpler the code, the easier it is for people and companies to forecast what their real liability is. that takes out some of the fear of the unknown. makes it easier to spend ... The "45 degree rule" for exit separation DOES NOT WORK
rehmwa replied to kallend's topic in Safety and Training
Remster already made the point - no need to pile on. I really don't need you guys going into defensive mode, this was individuals telling my newbies, not a DZ practice. they could have been other visitors for all I know. that said - this is about any dz of any size - I doubt you or anyone can "guarantee" what's in the minds of all the jumpers local to most any dz with more than half a dozen regulars. I recognize that your point is about the culture, training, and the high expectations of the DZ and speaking in general. This is learning here, not defense. I mentioned Eloy specifically to point out that there is NOWHERE that's safe from this old myth - if the (IMO) best of the DZs has these outdated practices stealth mode in some attendees, then all DZs probably do. It's why we keep this thread going - continuous training to everyone about opening separation. (If I find out the individuals and they were local, I'll send the info so he can retrain them) ... ooooooh, an obtuseness contest. I'll bite I takes twice as much room to print MCCXXXVIII than just 1238 - those damn romans are killing the earth {{unless he was talking about having to print forms in French and ALSO in english, rather than just in english - perhaps keep it to one copy, just print it in 10 languages, and then make the print 1/10th the size so they all fit the same page as the orignal with the one common language - but then that would be unfair to people over 40 - at least you could just print in braille over top of it all}} ... The "45 degree rule" for exit separation DOES NOT WORK
rehmwa replied to kallend's topic in Safety and Training
So on Saturday, I had a jumper (a little over a year, great progress and current) mention that not only did they count to 6 on the last load, but he also looked out and waited until we were 'about that angle' (held his arm out to about 45) - he noted "that's what a lot of the Eloy crowd told me this winter's trip" sigh so that's why we keep rehashing this thread - it resulted in a good conversation about drift and wind layers, and how a view 'angle' from the door is only good to give an idea of relative throw only, and has nothing to do with opening separation. ... I agree. it's the extremes that equate to unfit. you're trying to strawman my comment into the extreme (I'm likely reading yours as the other end too ) - but being able to see a shape does not equate to unfit at you noted. these models aren't displaying ribs, BTW, those are oblique muscles - ribs run horizontal. obliques run diagonal - bashing them for that is silly And fat does not equal curvy either. curvy usually means there's a waist in there somewhere. as I said - it spans a pretty wide range, but you didn't comment to that ... and when I can't at least "infer" where the bottom of the rib cage is, I start to get worried about that person's health - unnaturally thick is as bad as unnaturally skinny - IMHO. athletic wins over fat or skinny every time. But realize that that range encompasses a LOT of variety. I really just think that bonfire has a group that just knee jerks to bad mouth anyone attractive or fit. it's sad ... you're pretty cool about it actually, Keely. It was a general comment on the more activist segment. I can say the same thing about the sliver of religious types that are bit more in your face about their faith too I'm more anti--in-your-face-posturing. this means I hate children and old people, and likely hide stuff on the internet it's kinda tough here to see who's in that group here from either side - the argument goes so far back that you can't figure out "who did it first", but it's pretty easy on rockclimbing.com to see the weirdos on the topic - the big anti's here are compassionate and tolerant compared to that crowd on the other hand - if you believe in USPA Coach and PRO ratings, then I can't help you ...
