  1. Regardless of what you think about Obama, his educational level is well above average. To say Palin is somehow superior to him in that area is laughable. no, that makes sense. He's "book smart" but has no ability to link actions to consequences. Or policy to total economic meltdown. ... 4. I'm not getting the vibe that this guy is a DGIT at all. All I'm seeing is someone a bit technical in his mentality asking a bunch of questions. (this specific case, his intent wasn't swooping, it was a misunderstanding of what a swoop was, and exploration of how to improve his landings. The concept proposed was reasonable for someone high intelligence, but with little experience and the answers to correct his mis-perception were mostly on target though muddied with the knee jerk reactions we're sensitive to nowadays) Every student processes things differently - some just crave a ton of info and really do like the physics of it all. They want the answers, but that doesn't always mean they are trying to go too fast. It's just the way they are wired. I think Shah is hypothesizing something, and before trying it out himself he's asking more experienced people if he has it right. Read the thread, he got decent input, decided not to do it. Good for him. Now, there are others that do try to go too fast. They just go it and think their 'instincts' are good enough - in other words, they are lazy and don't want to go do their homework. give me a newbie that asks a lot of questions, and then listens. I'll take them every time. They deserve honest and direct answers, we need to avoid giving the "absolute conservative" responses (CYA stuff) - that just shuts their ears, give them 'real' explanations, and then watch them to see if they really get what we tell them in practice. teaching is great - you find out that every student is different, and not just a repeat of our personal experiences. FWIW EDIT: Shah - more speed does translate into more power - but as you've now read here, the timing aspect of it is not something for new jumper to experiment with on landing...... HOWEVER - it can be a refinement of a good technique. NOT a replacement for learning a good technique. Do it in order: learn to fly and land the heck out of your current canopy, straight in landing with normal toggle flares. no need to induce speed since getting that energy for landing is the definition of a swoop and requires good timing. A good canopy coach will be able to get you started in a couple hundred jumps just as part of learning the basics - long before you ever even want to consider riser turns to final. In the meantime, play with your risers and harness turns etc all you want - up high.. The only real issue I saw, was you thinking your "instructors were too busy" to talk to you ... 8. nice tip One of my favorites at the DZ is watching when our jump pilot chases off small airplanes that are flying around our DZ. It's funny, and very gratifying having that flying guarddog taking care of it. Dr. Cessna needs to check the NOTAM's, for cripes sake, when he does his once a month ego flight. ... 10. No. Not at all. I own . . . Being able to establish before the incident that there was a distinct possibilt . . My point is that guns simply give . . . The RO give you a far better chance at winning in court, w . . .. etc etc ok, I get you. nice post and very clear - but you clearly don't agree with Sacex's post at all. His was dizzying and not in accord with you (and me, I'm on your page now that it's clarified). You note that you do feel safer from the attacker if you are armed. The discussion that you are not so safe from the responsibility of your actions (the aftermath) is not the topic, but still a well made point. edit: and ---apparently--- it's not moot, but the only point of discussion tangent available to this crowd. As Bill's anecdotal stuff is always interesting and continues to not be really pertinent IMHO. (("I know of one guy that was eating corn and then choked to death when a shooting scene came up on CSI: New York. So.....sometimes guns are bad")) BTW - I took piece of paper and wrote "Restraining Order" on it - wrapped it in a tube and stuck a bullet in it. I pointed it at the ground and squeezed it. It seemed to be pretty ineffective vs a real gun. But it was only a single sample point - so likely not statistically significant. ... 11. The airspeed articles in the links at the top of this very forum should have a 'debrief' file. 13. It doesn't matter. Large model airplanes have no legitimate use in our society, no constitutional protections, and should be banned for safety before terrorists abuse them. affi course

Be a good jumper ------..... ....... no, better than that - (BTW being a good freeflyer doesn't automatically make anyone a good belly flyer - (being good at both is best)) do the pre-course - and listen and take it seriously Practice teaching - then practice some more (instruct, you demo first - but in "review" that means the student demos - for gosh sakes, let the student demo - overteaching really wears one out) Practice eval jumps - then practice some more Work "with" your other candidates - on the ground and in the air you almost can't be TOO aggressive while flying have fun with it - it's serious, but performance and receptivity is always better while composed and content ... 16. I don't think you understand the context of the article since your comments aren't making a bit of sense. Read it again and you'll see that the restraining order was already in place - but the intruder broke in despite the existing RO. You seem to be assuming that the woman got a restraining order after she shot him.... Frankly, I think the fact that there was a restraining order has NOTHING to do with the shooting. He broke in, he was attacking, he got shot - just as if a total stranger broke in and came at her with a crowbar. The point that he violated his RO is background that doesn't matter really (other than the woman was scared of him and took action for additional protection - good for her) ...... unless you think she set him up (took out the RO, acted all scared, and invited him over to pry up some loose floorboards before shooting him in cold blood....) ... stop being reasonable - that's not how it's done 1 - first you need to try to control the semantics and the terms - insist on fetus vs insisting on baby, killing vs abort, to start - for the sake of emotive arguments for both sides 2 - next you need to throw out cliches and catchphrases to shut up the discussion - Kallend and Normiss have a good handle on the one side try "it's HER BODY" that's a good one - on the other side - perhaps random bible quotes are approved for use either verbally or on placards - though placards are usually a good place for pictures of rosy cheeked children too I hope this helps - good luck ... you kinda buried yourself on this one. wouldn't a better analogy be a triage one? (two patients, both about to die, only one doctor. you can only save the first patient, but that'll allow the 2nd to die - if you try to only save the 2nd, you know both will die anyway. You can't save both) that's a lot different that Patient A walks over the stabs Patient B because Patient A doesn't want to share a hospital room (ooooh, that'll get them going) ... 22. No - e is MUCH less than E' - E You have to power the wind tunnel You also have to power the wind generator - you don't get free or even discounted 'leftovers' from the other. It's silly to burn electricity to power another power generator. your example with made up numbers to show the concept 500 kW to power the tunnel 700 kW to power the tunnel plus your generator the generator output will absolutely produce MUCH less than 200 kW it's a losing proposition - you are better off just powering your 200 kW air dryer from just an outlet in the building put your wind mill outside where the wind actually is free ... "viable non-human life mass dependent upon the male/female guardian vessels/human ATM" I know it's all about controlling the verbage to avoid the emotional argument, but I wonder - when you see a pregnant woman and she's rubbing her belly and talking about her baby, do you get in her face and correct her terminology? Is that in the playbook. (just for context, I'm still out to lunch on the whole abortion vs not debate, I understand both sides, it's pretty complicated and I'm more of a 'depends on the specific situation' camp dweller) ...
