unconventional idea to modify the income tax laws
rehmwa replied to jimmytavino's topic in Speakers Corner
It's none of my business how someone makes their lawful income and I'm not arrogant enough to declare one person's work as honest and another's as crooked. The idea is idiotic and just more social engineering. Gov should just stay out of it and treat all income streams equally. the idea is not "unconventional" either - it's pretty much the whole reason there's two very disfunctional parties - each of which tries so hard to make subjective value judgments on how people live and then punishing those they don't like and rewarding those they do like. I like this thread - it just shows that people are just like those parties - they all want to decide for others how they get punished and rewarded - rather than just stay out of their business. ... Possible short term positive, guaranteed long term negative.
rehmwa replied to Anvilbrother's topic in Speakers Corner
So we have a body on the operating (budget) table, he's out of shape (debt), and the doctor (congress, president) has "accidentally" nicked a major artery (spending). We need blood (revenue) and exercise (long term revenue) The current doctor is asking for a LOT of blood right now so can keep cutting into more arteries. He thinks it's fun and it allows him to charge more for his services. SO FIRST - we need a new doctor, period, he's purposely making things worse, and if the patient gets more blood, he will purposely cut more arteries. Once we get a new doctor - first you stop the bleeding (spending). Then you recover the patient (the bare minimum of increased revenue). get him out of post ops, and recovered - prove to us that we now have a responsible doctor that doesn't damage the body intentionally - then we can talk about proper diet and exercise I don't think massive taxing with a congress and president that are addicted to massive spending of much more of what we take in regardless of how much we take in will do a single thing. They won't cut spending. That culture needs to change or even taking all the money will just make it worse. Borrow more, or tax more, it doesn't matter - for every added dollar we take in, they'll increase spending by more than a dollar. ... that's a very fair price for a bootie conversion and Bev does top notch work. Still with a new suit (with booties) being $300 to $400 (or higher), seems a new suit makes a lot more sense for most people. we find that doing any work on 'other suitmakers' suits is a much bigger effort - with certain manufacturers having really wierd stuff going on in assembly that makes it even harder to break down. ... yes, those 'features' (I read as 'gimmicks') are totally unneeded for good booties. However, the time to disassemble, then match up a good pattern and rebuild is significant. My wife charges $120 for the conversion mostly because of all the work involved, however the materials in the bootie do tend to be the most expensive (leather and cordura). Worth more than an old crappy used suit. 4 or 5 hours of work is not out of line for this (I can tear down both legs to the correct rebuild point in less than 90 minutes, and I don't do that on a regular basis and don't even know the little tricks to breaking down serge lines, etc)) ... Is that why conservatives and especially conservative Christians donate MORE than their liberal or atheist counterparts? Silly Mike - Let BV wallow in the stereotype. Anyway you know that giving personally and directly to a cause doesn't count in liberal land - that's reckless spending because you picked the organization instead of letting the government do it for you. It only counts when you don't personally contribute, instead, you must advocate that others give via the tax and spend system. That's REAL charity. It doesn't count unless the "more equal" pigs get their cut. ... I don't see anyone protesting at Billvon's house. Nor do I think he made his money in the financial market. But if you insist, we can get a protest going - shit in his neighbor's mailbox, break the solar panels, etc..... (Though you do have a point - much of the top 1% of earners do consist of doctors and engineers and small/direct business people - much more than the portion of the 1% that did it via wall street. So maybe protesting small businesses and engineers and doctors is the way to go..........) ... I actually don't know what Romney's official position on NATIONAL health care is. But I'll check. But I don't see anything wrong if a governor would advocate it for a STATE and yet NOT advocate it for the nation. Frankly, I'd require a presidential candidate to have a clear understanding of the difference between the authority and role of state government vs federal government. Especially if they've served as a governor before. We wouldn't want their state-based viewpoints to be inappropriately expanded to the federal level on issues that don't belong there - would we? your contention (or assumption that the candidates feel this way) that federal government is just like state government except it's bigger (bigger range of influence) is a bit distressing really. They are supposed to be two totally different animals. I won't touch the rest of your post - you understand the idea of the state vs federal, but your post shows you are really ignoring it just for the sake of your argument. ... HUGE difference from a state's rights perspective. the fact that a state established some kind of health care initiative really should have nothing to do with taking a position that there shouldn't be a federal program. I never understood why Romney didn't make this point when getting slammed on it. What's right for one state isn't necessarily something that should be forced on everyone. And, if it's a bad idea for everyone, at least that can be demonstrated at the state level and not screw over the entire economy as an experiment. And, if it's a good idea for everyone, then each state can take it on one at a time. it's the whole point of the way the country was structured - this simply shouldn't be a federal responsibility. ... Sounds like lipstick on a pig. I'm normally on your side and find your tongue in cheek humor to be pretty great. And the PC folks ganging up on you as brave internet folks is really just sad here. But this comment turned me out pretty bad. If you don't recognize the value of your team members and use that to be a better leader, then you should go elsewhere. A strong "analytical" has a lot of weakness, but the strengths they bring are incredible in a well led team. And, yes, that personality type is the opposite of a good "expressive" personality type so that's frustrating for an 'expressive' type leader if he's not also a high adaptable type as well. As long as you consider yourself "normal" in comparison, you won't be able to be an effective leader at your job with any of these people. If you think you are frustrated, then your teammates likely feel it even worse if you don't value them like they deserve. For everything you can't stand about them, recognize that you appear reckless and knee jerk to them. As the leader, you either take your strengths and their strengths and put together something really great, or you are personally responsible for a bad team dynamic. that's how it works - and you have to be able to do that with all the different personality types too. ... You, as the manager..... I'm in the same boat. However, as a leader, you have to be able to put your head into their brains and be the one willing to take the risk when they get stuck. Engineers are, THANKFULLY, highly risk adverse. That's their comfort zone. They are not ALLOWED to take risks unless they are in a very good compay culture. Learning happens when we make mistakes (called design 'iterations'....) A good manager hires great engineers, and gives them the outlet to work through all the nitty gritty. Edit: On review, it actually sounds like you have a management chain that overmanages/micromanages. Else, you wouldn't have overly cautious engineers and tons of Power Point slides. (based on a really cursory read here). ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
