  1. And that's why we have PowerPoint verbage. It = delivery and listening/reading/context skills. I find that clarity depends a LOT more on the listener than the deliverer. ... 2. because it's important to you - you infer a certain amount of excuse making in the term 'forget' and won't accept the implication of diverting responsibility to take the right action - other people might not make that inference like you do and just use the term as a descriptor or even one they find drives acceptance as a root cause needing ownership also that's why is understandable that it's semantics for people like me but very important to you actually - I had thought that Billvon was the one that making inferences based on verbage, not you. I got that backwards. It's funny, some of the biggest arguments I've ever seen is when two people are clearly on the same page (agreeing) for what is happening and they can't recognize that they are agreeing with each other but just refuse to unless they use the same exact verbage. Usually engineers and technical types. I've seen arguments between grown ups over the use of the phrase "cut in" vs "implement" when both were just talking about making the same change in a product. thanks for caring - your motivation is understandable and caring for all the youngsters out there - I understand what you're trying to say, but trying to force others to use your specific phrasing is only useful when trying to succeed in getting promotions to executive level in engineering companies ... 4. I really doubt that, just because Squeak wants to use another word for the problem, implies that this equates to ignoring the possibility. The take away is that not pulling (for whatever reason and rare as it is) CAN happen to anyone and acknowledging that helps reduce the possibility for everyone. ... 5. I was on a 4-way Freefly load about 6 years ago. At 3000 jumps at the time and 18 years, I was the least experienced of that group. I broke the sit round at 4500 as usual and tracked away and dumped at 3000 (as usual). The whole time I watched that remaining 3 way remain in a sit. About the moment I was in the saddle (or so it seemed) - I saw them break, open and land - not a single one had more than a 10 second canopy ride. Two cypres fires (they didn't pull), and one other reserve fire (he remembered to pull silver - so he didn't forget). But I'd say pretty clearly that two forgot to pull at all at the right time or later, and one forgot to pull at any altitude good enough for a main. And that include all them seeing the 4th person break and track away during the dive. It's amazing how scary that looks when you're in the saddle and they continue to fall. However - I don't think they forgot again for the rest of that season afterwards, at least. They all agreed it was stupid - they didn't differentiate between the semantics of whether to call it 'forgetting' vs 'neglected' to pull, they just decided they should know it can happen and they didn't want it to happen to them again. ... 6. this is the big deal - find the Brand that fits your head shape. Just like there a lot of great brands for ski and rollerblade boots, but only likely one or two brands that fit any one individual. For the OP - I had an older Z1 and it was great. We bought another in '08 and it functions just as well - however, the newer one has a couple issues that the older one didn't. 1-they flipped the post on the visor pivot (the '08 model the post points out while on my original it points inward) - it makes it a million times harder to change lenses - and this is not a minor thing it's THAT much harder). 2 - Lots of seams in the padding that's glued now, my audible pocket started to really fall apart and my audible started to just fall out randomly - I'd find it adrift in the plane most every load. Luckily, we're handy and we just sewed in a more robust and functional pocket. I wish it were more airtight when I'm doing tunnel somewhere dry (Denver, Eloy) - but that's pretty minor. I'd really like it if the skirt/collar was more easily taken off to clean. on the plus side - I like that I can open and close the shield with one hand. I like that it stays closed and the method is very secure. This brand fits my head shape better than any other brand. but, in the end, I think the fit is the most important thing as all the helmets aren't that much different. I like the phantom (a lot for the way the liner snugs the face and the visibility), but I'm somewhere between the L and XL and the fit is so important for this helmet IMO, that I don't think I can buy one - and the ones I've seen a lot of little bit pieces breaking (buy a bag of hinge spares) and this last weekend, we had a jumper have the whole visor come off and he couldn't get it reassembled before the jump. I'm not bashing it, as I said, I like it a lot, but just to point out that all the helmets will have their quirks. I'm also not a fan of snaps and straps at all - prefer buckles. Still better than velcro any day. there was an older brand that had that temple strap, but it used velcro - those things were terrible and the visor would flip up randomly, etc. can't recall the brand I also don't know what a ratcheting mechanism is on a Z1 - nor a chin cup - perhaps those two guyrs were talking about a camera helmet from the same company. I'm a big fan of simple design - hinges, shell, liner, buckle and a simple locking mechanism makes me happy. the more bits and ratchets and devices, etc? I start to worry. I've looked at a lot of new helmets and I'm disappointed that I'll have to get a new one someday and it'll requrie two hands to flip the visor. that was the long answer. Short answer? I'd buy another one. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

  11. It's not my first response - ever. But once the other alternatives are used, this is always an option that might be needed for certain jumpers. But this is not a one size fits all approach - if someone finds this is always their first and only approach, then they might need to reconsider their style. What we don't see on dz.com is all the attempts to talk and teach it that failed first before a good instructor has to be more in your face. But it's usually most effective when one person that the student respects does it. Once it's just a giant pack of people piling on - I find the student just starts tuning it out. Whatever works needs to be in the bag - including in your face tough love delivery - every student is different, I won't exclude any technique. ... 12. What's the normal punishment for lotto winners who commit fraud? It's harder to justify welfare cheating by those with hundreds of thousands of dollars. They should be punished more aggressively than someone who is struggling to get by. Fraud is fraud - the penalty should be defined. So in your world, some pigs are MORE equal than others? you are advocating different punishment for the same crime - or, you are "justifying" crime for some, but not others. Situational morality is sad. you aren't punishing the criminal for their act - you want to punish the criminal based on YOUR outrage. That's not justice, that's vigilantism (and not Kallend's version). ... 13. I disagree with that with an intensely white hot emotion "making an example" of someone (i.e., punishing them MORE than you would someone that did the exact same crime) is horribly wrong. period. deterrent is NOT rationalization for unequal treatment under the law Deterrance is definitely a legitimate aim of the criminal justice system. Some prosecutions have a higher deterrance value than others. as I said - deterrence is NOT rationalization for unequal treatment would you agree to give 20 year sentences to black burglars and 10 year sentences to burglars of every other race based on statistics that this would have a net affect in reducing the total incidence of burglary in your city? If a crime has a standard punishment of 10 to 20 years based on the severity of the crime - that's fine - but if the sole purpose of maxing out the penalty is for deterrence (publicity) rather than related to the severity of the crime, then that shows a bias in the punishment that has NOTHING to do with the actions of the criminal. I don't think we should increase, nor decrease, a penalty just because of popularity, or visibility. The only thing that should be visible to the public is that the system is fair and equal and follows the rules that address the actual conduct of a criminal. deterrence should be a side effect only - not a mission ... 14. that's not normally what people mean by "making an example" - they typically mean unequal/elevated level of punishment for the same crime I don't much care if the issue is just publicity - right up to the point that the publicity suddenly makes judges and lawyers act outside the bounds of their real duty There nothing "Just" about tacking on extra years just so a judge or a prosecutor or a mayor can have a good sound bite on TV. ... 17. Except that is not a fact. Many people truly believe they get wonderful and honest news from them. I noticed when they first started airing programs, Fox attempted to always put someone from both right and left on every program in a real attempt to show balanced programming. So likely they started with the "Fair and Balanced" signline with the true intent. They were very clear to contrast opinion vs news shows and even the opinion shows had interviews that always balanced (you rarely had a single person interview, they always had a right and left guest and usually a 'neutral' expert too). Of course this was fairly short lived. The customer base demanded a right leaning programming philosophy. At this point one could just treat the "Fair and Balanced" line as acknowledgement that Fox knowingly leans right to "balance" the ridiculous left leaning of the rest of mainstream media. In that term, it's pretty accurate. It certainly works in terms of gathering viewership. And since it's a business, that's a win for them. Make money - that's what all the 'news and opinion' stations are all about. The only show that really bugs me is the morning show - I can't even watch it - the woman is ugly, the two guys appear to be total idiots and the content is slanted to a comical level. I tend to just watch local stations for news and look up what I need for major stuff. I don't trust any of the stations out there at all the second any report stops giving facts and starts speculating about causes, effects, or theory. Sadly, that pretty much happens with any story, from every station - usually in the intro teaser. ... 19. It's a tough call. Every student is different. We can only use "tough love" on those that will respond to nothing else. I've seen more cases of where being tough on the kids just results in them clamming up and doing stupid stuff even more - essentially, they just shut out the input after enough abuse. you have to pick and choose which communication method works. I've griped a lot about the heavy handed approached used by some here (despite VERY high intentions) - but, what I don't know, is whether that treatment was the last resort after trying more friendly approaches. I don't know any instructors that are just assholes right at the get go. But I know enough Swoopy McAwesome's that can drive even the most softest spoken instructor into a drill sargeant - eventually. In the end, you have to figure out what works, what gets through, to each individual student. Nothing is off the table if normal methods don't work. ... 21. you make the statement that redistribution is founded on an assumption that proportional payment rather than absolute payment is the basis for price and tax that's not absolute, that's a personal opinion Bill Gates buys a gallon of gas, Joe Plumber buys a gallon of gas - they pay the exact same amount in sales tax - how on earth can you call sales taxes "redistribution" in any way? redistribution is government moving money from one group to another when 'another' did nothing to earn it ...
