  4. Or scaled to profitability maybe makes more sense. Trying to stimulate a new market may make a bit more sense than stimulating an incredibly profitable market? I don't think the margins in oil are incredibly profitable - just the volumes make it feasible. But I don't see any need to give them breaks that any other industry wouldn't get. And this specific industry, I believe government taxes make more money per gallon of oil than the companies do in profit. Stimulating a new market drives prices up and slows down the need to make the product truly affordable. Why invent a $500 solar panel when Billvon can buy a $5000 solar panel for $10,000 (using his $5000 and then getting an additional $5000 that the government stole from his neighbor for that purpose - thus jacking up the price past its value.) (FWIW - I'm a big fan of deleting all stimulants and all penalties from all the markets. Let the free market work. So I'm not a fan of stimulating either sector.) ... 6. why does this even have to be about 'being prepared' if you pass the criteria and get legally licensed, your reason just doesn't matter "because I can" is just as valid as "I want to protect myself" is just as valid as "it has sentimental reasons" etc etc etc ... 8. scaled to the industry size of course, I'd suspect the solar companies are getting a much bigger proportionate share - scale it to actual output - I suspect it even more but I have no reference for that ... 10. It would be a great way to thin out the hotheads from the population....... sticks and stones and all that. seems you should be able to protect yourself as necessary regardless, as long as you weren't escalating physically, only verbally however, I could see a lot more meat added to existing laws to address slander just to address this issue - then cowardly assholes that taunt would have to be responsible for their actions financially or with a bit of time too ... 11. People shouldn't answer this question - 100 people might have 100 answers from "they are professional bodyguards" to "they had to helplessly once watch a loved one killed" to "they just think guns are neat" - they are under zero obligation to justify themselves why is it any of your business why someone carries a piece of personal property? serious question (i don't carry, that's my choice. but at least I have a choice. I don't judge other's motivations, just their actions, trying to judge and control the mentality of others is a pretty silly way to live) ... 12. that's subjective - Yes, it is, isn't it. And that seems to be a big part of the problem with the law. In legal terms, a subjective belief is the actual belief held by the individual in question. In the case we are talking about, the subjective belief would be what Zimmerman actually believed at the time. The reasonable belief is judged on an objective standard. What would a clear-thinking, rational person in Zimmerman's place believe? In order to assert "stand your ground," one's belief that one is in danger has to be reasonable. So here, Zimmerman's subjective belief doesn't matter. The question is, what would a rational person in his situation believe? You mention Zimmerman in this case. I thought the current tangent was trying to justify Travis' attack - i.e., the kid was justified in attacking based just on Zimmerman taunting him. That's why I asked upthread which of the two were being discussed in this tangent about sticks and stones. ... 13. yup - and the result is good intentions absolutely retarding the progress of the artifically favored technology because the motivation to find cost effective solutions is removed and practical invention to allow the technology to come to market is delayed or even destroyed. You want to KILL a good idea? let the government decide to sponsor it. Of course, the orange drink "TANG" being the clear exception to the rule. Another corollary? Do you want to make education completely too expensive for the common man? Let the government pay for it in the attempt to 'make it affordable'. The injection of tax dollars will drive the price up until no one can afford it except the rich. Subsidies - killing off good markets since time began ... 15. that's subjective - personally, I don't feel that way. Especially if we're talking about an immediate threat rather than implication of a future attack. They'd have to be very convincing to make me cross that line to defend with deadly force rather than restraint, or any action at all if nothing physical is initiated. If it's possible at all. Seems that anyone that's trying to instigate with verbal abuse will either give up, or take the next step and initiate physical gestures or confrontation. Then the line is more definitively crossed. Of course, the "sticks and stones" defense does allow any asshole to just verbally abuse anyone around them. But that doesn't warrant deadly force. Short of it - there's a plethora of people that talk big and threaten big. Rarely do they act. But responses should be calibrated on actions, not words. Edit: I have one exception you have stirring in my mind though. If the threats and talk are coming from a large group, and the only perceived way out of it is to attack first before they act, rather than wait until it's too late. But even then, there is still body language, positioning, and other physical cues in addition to the speech that can be assessed. (Once that's allowed, then the logic is easier to move towards your contention, but still it's hard to see it) ... 24. that's an interesting position, considering that the original certificate holder may very well have facilitated a real purchase by transferring that gift certificate As for disallowing it..... the plus - you get that free advertising by getting your name out there during the drawing the minus -it seems the policy might limit your ability to get another physical rig out there for people to see or admire by limiting the use of the certificate to just the original winner I think this is a cost effective policy. You reduce the actual number of occurrences that the company has to redeem the coupons but still get the word out by being part of public drawings. This is very common technique - and smart - and everyone does it. I don't think your stated reason makes any sense though. It's well known that giving out certificates instead of physical prizes is a great way to get cheap advertising. For minor items, people rarely cash in certificates, especially for low value items. I suspect that if a company gives out 3 certificates for a free t-shirt instead of 3 t-shirts (for example) then the company will likely only have to provide a single t-shirt, if any, once the dust settles. But stand on stage and throw out 3 t-shirts to the crowd? Well, it costs you 3 t-shirts, but then they are likely going to be worn that night and during the boogie immediately. it's a real tradeoff ...
