NOT. Where have I ever claimed that ZERO is attainable? you don't state zero is attainable, however, your counter argument is one that implies a goal of zero - and since it's unattainable by definition, then it means you are advocating for something impossibly restrictive every time you note "what about (single example) nutjob? why didn't the system catch him ahead of time?" at a minimum, it's equivalent to arguing agains inferences from a pro-gun to mean deletion of all laws neither of you is advocating zero error - but you guys are treating the other like that what he's doing and, I still contend that "MORE" isn't a position, just an unactionable statement of dissatisfaction strawman vs strawman - pointless ... it's your strawman zero alpha vs zero beta arguments are just pointless merry go rounds - it's clear neither of you are advocating anything other than trying to out last the other at least it used to be entertaining, lately, it's just sad what additional safeguards to you want? how much will they cost the law abiding in terms of real time, and dollars? do you really think the current rules are being followed? "MORE!!" is not a solution. It's a non-productive complaint. Your airplane should be grounded, someone died once in an airplane crash. Can't we just require planes to be build with nice safe plate steel instead of that dangerous aluminum? why is it a matter of law instead of culture? ... (((let me get this straight - first pass a law that forces the banks to give loans to 'such people'. then the solution to the problem that caused, is to now pass a law to bar 'such people' from getting loans - the liberal mind is an amazingly nuanced thing - truly dizzying))) how about the government stays out of it? They don't subsidize the individuals - they don't subsidize the banks - they just let people and organizations enter contractual agreements and restrict the level of government involvement with just ensuring that each parties lives up to their deals - the self interest of each group is sufficient to ensure that the right level of risk/reward is achieved I don't think taxpayer money should go to the banks, the bank execs, nor to people like Shah either ... The fuss is absurd. It's not as if she died saving kids from a burning building, or finding a cure for ebola, or protecting Afghan civilians from terrorist attack. Those are the folks we should honor, not washed up chemically enhanced entertainers. Whitney was a working mother. Clearly you don't consider brave working mothers to be heroic. Just curious if you considered those who put their lives and health on the line to fight diseases, working in the poorest and most dangerous areas of the world, to be "heroes" worthy of honor. Question answered, wow, that's about as useful as me accusing you of not considering fathers, working mothers, boy scouts, and teachers to be heroes it's a pointless and obstructive strawman and you guys know it frankly, words like "hero" are another example of total overuse by emotionally over the top weirdos ... EXACTLY! A perfect illustration of the inadequate implementation of a prohibition on gun purchases by the deranged. are you STILL advocating for a psychological screening process with zero alpha error? (or is it beta?) either way, zero of one forces 100% of the other, as you know - you realize you actually are trolling, no matter how you pitch it - because there is no such thing as a perfect solution. you're not building a bridge ... I don't really know who "they" are. From the basejumpers that I know, I can say: "they" consist of a percentage of people that do what you say. A small percentage, but definitely some "they" consist of people that just don't think about it. Not because they are purposely careless, but they just don't think about those kinds of things. pretty big percentage. Seems like the first group is actively trying to recruit them over to a better view of the sport. "they" consist of dumbasses that really don't care and just do it because their egos can't handle less and they are just plain idiots about the activity. another fairly large group - which seems to be growing I'd prefer that first group to keep growing, personally. My wife builds jumpsuits, so we've seen a lot. your height and weight - yes. Spandex forearms is most likely. You most likely tend to float, so everything fit for more speed is probably what you need. Also, you'll have even more surface area with your booties and full gripper set (you better get the full grippers), so that will also slow you more - offset that with a snug fit, and spandex forearms. If you are currently falling well with your friends, or even floaty, then you might also go with the faster nylon over the nylon supplex (and definitely not polycotton). But, you need to answer the question for sure. In your current suit (noted it's a snug fit). Is it easier to stay up with your friends, or stay down with them? Do you wear weights now? Tony runs a good shop - it's silly to ask here. Call them up while getting your order ready and ask those questions. Make sure you get measured by someone that knows what they are doing, don't be afraid to call the company if any measurement isn't crystal clear in your mind. Measure everything twice. We've had to refot most suits that were from other companies because they were mail order to our locals and the customer didn't do the order form correctly. Edit: and, if you don't fly mantis, it's worth learning - you'll learn a LOT more fall rate range on both ends ... I only know one cameraman that had booties installed with his wingsuit - Michigan did it for him. I don't like it when I fly camera. Skimmer has, and I'm sure other manufacturers has their designs such that infrequent bootie reworks aren't too difficult. (just make sure that the shoe good doesn't cover the stitch lines - that really makes it a bitch to take apart) If we can find you a correct fitting and suit with full sized booties by the tunnel camp, I promise you an epiphany ... strap on booties sounds idiotic - if you can't keep tension in them, then they are just impotent shoe covers sometimes, you have to just get the right tools for the job again - seems like this would be a better request in the RW forum. did you try a search in that forum - I saw something there about it once and a general search containing "strap on" will just divert you to Bonfire threads ... The overconfidence of tunnel instructors
rehmwa replied to TunnelThrowaway's topic in Safety and Training
Yes, and you've touched on a major hole in the rating course. They don't test for skydiving knowledge at all. Case in point: How is it that a student had to explain to his AFFI how to read the winds aloft charts from NOAA? Yes, it has happened. How is it that an AFFI teaches the 45 degree rule? Yes, it has happened. How is it that an AFFI doesn;t know how to spot? Yes, it has happened. How is it that an AFFI doesn't know how to give a proper gear check and misses a mis-routed RSL? Yes, it has happened. Ahhhhh....I'll tell you why. He was able to stay close enough to a fake student to pass air skills. He was able to regurgitate two training jump outlines that were provided to him. Simple as that. I kinda lean to needing some kind of referral to the course director prior to taking the class - but that has it's own issues. ... don't forget throw - it can big a pretty big difference as well (if all the groups know how to stay stable on the hill anyway) I hope this isn't wry personal bash on me. If you look above, I make note in a couple posts about varying exit time for non-standard order, I also note way up there about the rules changing for different wind and jump run conditions other than "typical" and in my first post on this thread I specifically noted that my answer was specific to 'typical' jump run and wind conditions (go see them) hell, in my response directly to you I added an edit noting that if the RW following the FF group was assumed with a longer separation delay, then I'd give you a different answer so just who are you griping to? find some exit separation threads, there is good commentary about mixing around the order and how that extends the total jump run time, etc. good discussions ... I think as time goes on, this is becoming less and less true. Frequently, very new jumpers like to THINK this because it makes them feel very special - like they are in a very exclusive group. It's an ego thing. It's just a sport. Most anyone can be trained in it. The usual physical and personality traits that make someone excel at it are similar to most any other sport. I'd say the most analogous sports that have good cross over in physical compatability are ones that relate to control and awareness of your body: martial arts, dance (especially ballet), springboard and general diving, gymnastics........ as far as mental readiness - it's a very strange environment at first. We give you increasing complexity of tasks in the environment to see how you handle them while simultaneously getting comfy in the new realm. SCUBA diving has a similar philosophy if you think about it. ... I know a couple hundred of your so called "asian people" I gotta tell you - as individuals, they are pretty.....well....individualistic......... in motivations, career goals, background, etc. Heck, a couple of my coworkers even are good friends with a couple of our Executive VPs - but I guess the fact that they do very good work has nothing to do with them being in a position of responsibility (I won't tell you what gender, color, hair type they are - you can squirm about it - it doesn't matter here - except in HR) jeeeez, just like what you might define as 'normal' people this line of discussion pretty sums up what disgusts me about Affirmative Action debates ...
