  1. probably not. Even with birds, I know several skydivers that have no concept of flight ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

  3. You pretty much just reiterated my points - so, yes, I agree I'm ok with the Fire Captain making the real time call for the safety of his crew. His knowledge and experience for these specific scenarios would have to guide him. If he's knowledgible about powder and ballistics, then great. If not, I wouldn't expect him to take a risk he is unable to assess. here's for fun: Let's be realistic here - that slug does not have an "initially high velocity" - physics would note that the casing leaves with most of the velocity - not the slug.,......unless the brass is up against a back stop - [[[and the brass is restrained about it's circumference - I suspect that much of the energy in an unconstrained explosion is consumed in expansion of the brass, rather than conversion to velocity of the brass and the slug away from each other.]]] funny thing about casings - lousy aerodynamics, little mass, and they aren't very pointy science and human nature - all in one post ... 5. I phrased it like it's a bad thing. But, then, I'm working from cartoon stereotypes of the nosy neighbor wagging the 'association contract' One man's "eyesore" is the other guy's "proudly owned 20 year old DZ camper they like to park on the street and block my view of the lake" rules are interesting, but nothing replaces being friends with your neighbors and being willing to listen and not being scared to just talk to them directly ... 7. I keep the gas for my lawnmower and other power tools in my shed out back so it is much less of a hazard to myself and others. I really doubt that the firestation has a list of inventory of every citizen that they review before going to the house - I know I've not provided one to the fire dept in my entire life. I really doubt if the department knows how much ammo JohnRich has in his house nor do they know just where Southern-Man stores his 3 gallon jug of gas and 2 gallon just of gas/oil mix. What I do suspect is that they respond to a fire and when they see certain types of fire, hear odd noises and explosions, smell the fire, and feel the heat, that they will react as best they can to the perceived personal danger while trying their best to deal with these unknowns in doing their job. none of which is an "excuse to stand by and do nothing to save someone's home" - it's just doing their job these discussions about whether or not exploding bullets are lethal (normally not), or if loose gunpowder is explosive (normally not) are really moot - the fireman doesn't necessarily know that it's exactly 2000 rounds of 22 rimfires - they just see and hear something they need to immediately assess. Now, if the homeowner is present, I'm sure that info would be appreciated by the crew and that many do have the education to know what's best. ... 8. selfish, napoleanic board members of homeowners associations are a great little mini picture of the true character of politicians (busy bodies that want to control where and how you wash your car, how long to cut your grass, what kind of street lighting you display, holiday decorations, color and nature of your drapes, where and how you park) watching and learning well, at least the national politicians aren't so petty, if they were, they'd be trying to tell us little pissy crap like what flavor light bulbs to use - thank goodness they aren't that bad ... 9. or....it could just be a request for personal opinions only hyper political types consider that their personal opinions should be codified into law - but since it seems to be inferred here in SC so often, I can see why you'd jump to that conclusion and defending the right of an individual to own personal property as they see fit is always a good argument ... 11. that said, I clicked "atheist" in the spirit of what the OP was trying to do I'm militarily agnostic - I just don't care and I want to make sure that everybody around knows it dammit ....... if they really want to,....if not.......that's ok too....or not....whatever I just want to be very definitive in my apathy - like a rock.....sorta Edit: and just some pedantoranticity for Keely. I'd like to restate this category: Atheist: I cannot know for certain but I think God is very improbable. However, I live my life under the assumption that it just doesn't matter if he's there or not ... 15. I think if you would have just put the descriptions there without the labels, than you'd have a better result. For example - of the bottom four or five I'd only call the very bottom one atheist, and the rest of that area is agnostic. And the top three are pretty much theist. Avoid the labels, and you get less SC type contention I'd be an atheist by your breakdown, and I refuse to accept that label which I consider absolute. ... 16. actually, I think you read him incorrectly Nope. Andy wrote that cutting any religious/social/moral stuff is brainwashing. Whatever, Jakee - I read that as an accusation, but instead of reaming him, I asked for a clarification and got it. But you'd just accuse him of waffling anyway, so no point in the discussion. despite the other bit that you're referencing a Billvon quote ... 17. absolutely - however, a couple things need to be understood organized religion exercises that power through religion "faith" does not equal religion the fact that faithful people seem to be unable to understand that faith does not equal religion is what gives the corrupt power over them the same technique can, and has been, applied to enviromentalists, nationalists, etc etc etc etc throughout time singling out religion is interesting and popular, but it's no different than taking any type of belief and turning people subservient to the power structure goals no better, but no worse either ... 18. agreed - I truly believe that politicians have no clue, that an ever increasing population of the rest of us, understand, that any policy that panders to any one group has to be paid for by anyone NOT in that group and, that even when they are pandering to ME, I still recognize that this is a bad thing because it clearly shows they have no clue ... 21. this one got to me also - I think the poster was projecting his own mental issues with being uncomfortable with deployment altitudes on the coach's situation (reference the deployment altitude thread) or, as you said, the coach needs a bit more confidence and skill to get stable, slowed down and deploy seriously - 4500 is a very decent FF breakoff - I wonder what the coach was doing? and, with some canopies, a 1 minute ride does NOT automatically indicate a low opening - that kinda depends on what the pilot does after a the opening - even a very brisk and clean opening. ... 22. this is a good comment - and a lot of what I see pertinent to the topic has to do with advanced techniques someone mentioned back about how 4 way techniques are always evolving and the obsolete techniques continue to be pushed - even when someone is shown a new way to do things, it's sometimes easier to stick with what we were taught and are comfy with rather than continue to stay current I suspect the first time a double vert block move (instead of flat) was done in comp it raised a big stir!!! Mantis vs boxman fits the discussion really well too. Daffy vs straddle in FF some of the head up body positions are pretty different and effective compared to the straight sit I was shown back around 1990 ooh, SIT SUITS, or even "you should learn sitflying with big tops to make it easier" - I believe that's detrimental and builds bad habits. but that's just me - I'm also the guy that likes to get newbies to full size booties and mantis as soon as they are comfy and stable (around the A license point is nice) Consarn it! I jump belly down frog modified with no booties and no inside grippers...and that's how I LIKES it and that's how I COACH it ... 23. clearly speaking - I'm talking about those so indoctrinated in their religion, that a politician can score or lose points just by mentioning god and religion in every speech (they all do it - seems it's playing it safe - sincere or not) I'm not talking about those religious people that are able to see past that and keep their politics and religion in perspective in their choices ... 24. thanks - that's what I thought and, frankly, we have bozo parents - and they'll raise bozo kids I'm ok with that - we can't eliminate bozos from the populace - we can only replace them with different types of bozos. I consider the rights of parents to raise their kids a worthy tradeoff for the variety we get. ... 25. key point - the Government (either with good intentions or to just garner more votes) and designed a law that played favorites to a special group instead of useful for all citizens (one could argue this is beneficial for all citizens that choose to use it - Kallend would correctly argue, that those with more discretionary income have a great increased ability to use it). So - lessons learned - if a law is issued that is SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO FAVOR A TARGET GROUP - then it's wrong (unless that target group = law abiding citizens over law breakers) ...
