  1. the irony is that the current path is enabled by liberal policies that only see short term effects but neglect long term results - and the people that do worry about the gap widening are the ones advocating doing even more of the same killing off small and medium sized business venture with ridiculous regs guarantees that only huge business survives - artificially and temporarily stimulating these same small and medium businesses and THEN killing them off makes it even worse ... 2. How DARE he decide where and how to give his money away!!! How incredibly selfish of him. The fact that he's making the decision instead of the government just shows that he's a true Republican hiding in liberal's clothing. He's a complete hypocrit if he doesn't just write all these checks directly to the US Treasury. wry digression over.....my apologies to all ... 5. well, clearly he's only talking about Utahoeans (Utahans?, Utanians, Utahweiacs?) Here's the funny part: Most of us state, "wow, this school board is really messed up" that board is the INDIVIDUALS that actually made the screwed up action. That's pretty much how most of us swing. I don't doubt that most of the citizens in Utah consider this one school's actions to be stupid too But the same usual suspects keep throwing out their biases and find it self validating "Utah" is messed up "America" is messed up "Democrats" are messed up "Republicans" are messed up etc etc etc generality - in a country based on individualism don't be surprised we reply strongly when others try to put the citizens into little narrowly defined stereotyped bins ... 6. sure, if politically defined only - even if it would all fit into just one of our bigger states or large regions try this on for size - culturally, in terms of diversity/dialects/size, etc, would you say the Netherlands is more like Utah/New Hampshire/Maine? or more like the entire US or China? I have a much more legitimate argument to take anything you say and pretend everybody in your country has those same bias, then you would to me but we'd both be wrong - your prejudices are unfounded you can sit there, with more of a chance to be surrounded by people that look like you, talk like you, have the same education, same environment, etc etc etc, and seriously feel comfortable about accusing others of lack of sophistication in understanding about sensitivity with people different than them? ... 8. I think he can do it. If you want to bunch in and stereotype all 50 US states, I see no reason why we can't bunch up all the European countries and treat you all the same, too. 17. I understand this argument, Wendy. Nevertheless, I think it's silly because it's a purely emotionally based argument designed to push a specific agenda rather than to correctly describe the nature of the tax. Misusing the term regressive dilutes the descriptive ability of the term. ... 18. Strawman. So was your inference that JR was ok with guns in the hands of a pre-schooler. 20. we're talking income tax, but anyway that's kind of an idiotic consideration if you think about it - if the rate is constant, then you pay more for the more that you BUY. seems a bit silly to call that regressive, progressive, or neutral - it's all about your purchase choices...... ... 21. It's not the home and property that I would be worried about. Two burglars finding a 15-year-old girl coming out of the shower, could easily lead to rape and murder. I'm glad she had a gun with which to drive off the intruders and save herself. agreed - I'd also have been happier if she'd have left the house altogether is that option was there. (I'm a dad of a 16 year old girl). If she doesn't know how to handle that gun, and they take it away from her, now you have two pissed off crooks that are even more likely to escalate beyond just stealing a truck. Short of it is - Dad left a gun lying around in a house with his kid untrained to use it. If she's trained, then I'm much more agreeable to the conversation. But since she's not, Dad screwed up. She didn't know how to use the gun, and it was VERY unlikely she would have been able to fire it at the criminals if they forced her to. Look - I believe in knowledgable gun ownership, that training can come from dad, or a course, or whatever and not be defined or restricted by the government. I'm not a fan of someone having an unsecured gun around if they don't how to use it responsibly. ... 22. of course, (I didn't intend for example to inferred as the only type) my example is the end point - it can certainly even get more unbalanced in either direction when you manipulate rates as a function of income. Kind of my point really. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  23. that's more of a speech than a question, however 1 - I am talking principle. That's where we should start. thanks for agreeing 2 - Maybe we could compete in a 'less manipulated' market if the government would get out of the way - how do you know? Certainly those companies that do survive will be very efficient. If the populace has to pay taxes to keep an industry alive just because China starves their own people to do the same, is that industry really helping the whole populace of either country? Seriously, does every single taxpayer have to contribute $5 more a year in taxes just to keep the plastic poop company of Chicago alive - even if none of us ever wish to purchase plastic poop? 3 - miltary question - If we were more fiscally responsible - why shouldn't a few companies go out of business if they can't survive the competition of supporting a military that's reduced to a more reasonable mission statement? ... 24. no, a simple (no deductions, etc) flat tax rate is a progressive tax (the more you make the more you pay.) A tax where everyone pays the same "amount" not the same "rate" is an example of a regressive tax. And that's only regressive interms of percent of income. But usually we define progressive and regressive in terms of percent of income, not actually contribution. edit: clarified ... 25. I gotta say, John. In this case, the girl got lucky. Best case scenario happened here. Dad screwed up not locking it up when the kid was home alone and not trained to use it. My preference is to teach the kid how to use it responsibly and then let her know where the key is to go get it if needed. Else lock it up - the kid doesn't know how to handle it. My daughter knows and respects guns. But I lock mine up, (law here is lock them up if minors live in the house anyway, but that's not why.) mainly because she can have friends over and I don't know if they are trained and responsible. anyway - the kid's intention to protect her home and property is commendable - though I'd have preferred she just got away and called the cops edit: I don't mean "trained" such as ready to kill, moving target range, etc. Just trained to load, unload, use the safety, shoot straight, respect the tool - before leaving it accessible. As for her choice to confront vs run? that's an entirely different discussion ...
