he thinks the point of your post was about making the nutjob "face the same horror" comment. The assumption being you don't care about protecting the kids, but just want to get revenge on the killer no matter what as being important. He didn't seem to respond to your real point of having someone trained and present to immediately respond in protecting the kids vs waiting for the authorities. I can't even tell any more if that was on purpose or not. Sometimes reader pick up on the weirdest points in a post ---- so disputing a comment about that little bit is pointless since you two are talking past each other the true Speaker's Corner response would be to strawman reply as fast as possible as if he took a conflicting position by virtue of having ignore your real point. like this - Sure, Quade, so you are saying you are ok with having unarmed teachers and even more babies to dye while waiting the extra 5 to 10 minutes for the cops to come. I just can't accept that. I value children and teachers. not true either, Quade's a decent guy. but this response works well here and can generate 2 to three pages of "did", "did not" posts (Frankly, I like your idea a lot, but just having guns 'stashed' away around some schools would be a clear invite to some students breaking in and stealing the guns somehow - I'd rather the entrusted staff just be allowed to carry on site). ... IMHO - not having an AAD is a crappy thing to do to your other AFFI. and we really should check each other anyway so no excuse to 'not remember' if they use one. It's a hell of a crap deal to take care of your student and to have to also be ready to take care of the other instructor too. But if the AFFI didn't have an AAD - that's who I try to catch. It's the only scenario that saves everyone BTW - our first job in any scenario is to save ourselves. so that altimeter is our best friend. ... So I'm assuming the scenario is I have the job to release if it tumbles and my wife has the job to fix the funnel. right? (if not, I dump the student and then chase my wife - I have plenty of time) but under the scenario above........ It'll take a bit of time to recognize that they both are unconscious, so I don't really have a choice. What I "see" is that my S.O. has failed to stabilize the student and has lost her grips. At that point and hopefully I'm sticky close anyway, I'm on a beeline to catch the student. That's the job. My "assumption" is my wife is ok, but lost the student. So I go catch the student. It's not necessarily quick to recognize he's out, and dump him after a bit. Hopefully I don't waste any time thinking I can "wake him up". In some cases it might be hard to recognize if he's unconscious vs just froze up. The nice part is someone unconscious typically just "lounge chairs" and is likely easier to catch (even spinning) and relaxed enough to flip compared to a thrashing student "trying" to arch. either way - even if I get him right away, it'll still eat up a lot of time. Next step - 'where the hell is my wife'? Depends if I can even find her at that point..... If I magically KNEW that both were unconscious - ......... they both have AADs. I suspect I'd get my wife, her canopy is MUCH less forgiving on opening than a student reserve and more likely to have an opening issue if she's not in a belly to earth position. And it's my wife. Not the most noble answer, but likely true. If it wasn't my wife, but just a friend with an AAD on the other side? I don't know......I think my training would just have me on the student out of reflex... I always find out on any dive who doesn't have an AAD. Just habit. hard to tell what a person will do, but thinking about scenarios makes the decision quicker for those that have a plan. ... I disagree. I think there are comments that can be made that would place some of the blame with the person making the comments. I don't think you should simply be able to say what you want and then shoot the person after he takes a swing at you and claim innocence. Not saying that is what happened here, just stating I don't agree with that concept. I can only think of one comment....a VERY convincing promise of imminent violence to myself or others...."As soon as you leave, I will immediately go over to your house with this weapon you see in my hand and kill your entire family" IMHO other than that, if one can't deal with the "sticks and stones" concept, they might consider therapy for lack of control ... I disagree with the "confront" part - face to face, verbal? no problems. If guy one can follow. Then guy two can stop and ask him "WTF". But - the first person to actually get physical is the one that's 100% responsible for the physical confrontation regardless of what happens up to that part. ... Stuff that annoys me now normally makes me laugh. one that really got to me was someone with an overstuffed bag trying to get it in the overhead if she's cute - help her if not, just sit an laugh while that "expansion feature" on the side of the case continues to get caught. big clue - pushing HARDER doesn't work if it won't fit. it's amazing how many can't look at their bag and then look at the opening and still not be able to see that it won't fit or needs to be turned around. (it's still easier to just get up and help) I do still get annoyed at those that jump up and race to front to get off. easier to just sit awhile and read. Also still annoyed at people that won't help someone struggling with a case (think little old lady trying to lift it and a healthy and strong young guy looking annoyed at her rather than standing up and helping). I also don't like it when someone sticks one item in the overhead and then shuts the door. I'll reopen it. True story - I saw one guy on an international flight carefully lay out his suit jacket in an overhead and then shut the door. It only took about 5 seconds for his nice coat to be wadded up in the back of that compartment with my carryon and the next two guy's carryon's shoved up on top of it. etc ... Actually, I need a little more insight on how living in a higher density area conveys wisdom, moral high ground, and amazing sophisticated insight. I have to assume, that having, say, over 1 million people, within a 60 miles radius or so must stimulate the endocrine system, or the brain stem. I assume it's a gravitational, or electro-magnetic effect due to the constantly moving population mass in such close proximity. so if F = (n)G.M1.M2/Rsq with n being the number of people, and R being relatively small compared to those living in, say, Montana. Well, it's perfectly clear where the super-intellectual effect being claimed can be proven here I am, consistently taking individuals by what they do and how they act on a one at a time basis before deciding if they are decent or not. What a SAP, all I really needed to ever know is where they live. Clearly, growing up on a farm has hamstrung me despite my time in Phoenix, Pittsburgh, DC, and Minneapolis. I really need to move to Tokyo ASAP or risk being culturally deficient. ... not normally. Normally it's harmless and well intentioned. But if they wear their religion like a cloak and truly do think that makes them better than the next guy and want that to be an excuse to belittle others of different thought and location, etc etc etc. Of course I do. Not any different than urban smugness, or academic smugness, or political smugness, or class smugness, or secular smugness, etc etc etc. take the purely hypothetical statement "I so glad I'm a Christian, I'm sure the heathen is just willfully ignorant of the true state of affairs. Most of them are." Of course, this is just an example, I'm sure analogies abound. "Men" just don't understand "(insert race here)" just don't get it ... I love these types of comments - this is the biggest issue facing society today. Pure narcissism and self satisfied superiority complexes. The best is when someone makes a statement like this in a discussion condemning nationalism, racism, sexism, or any other form where one group feels so smugly superior to other groups. locale as a criteria for superiority is great - for high school football games ... yes, yes, and yes gymnasts, dancers, martial artist, divers, etc - have an 'initial' advantage. IMO, they have more experience in being aware of what their body is doing - especially any part lower than their ribcage. general fitness is also an advantage. In teaching, this has paid off time and time again. In general, the success rate with a good athlete (from a sport that emphasizes body awareness) is amazingly better than your average student - lately, average = couch potato Of course, if the uber-athlete is a dumbass with a bad attitude, then it really doesn't matter much either. Of course - if the student is avid in golf, hunting, fishing, driving, motorcycling, or baseball, then that also puts them square in the 'average' bucket . Claims of being an athlete in these cases should be met with a quiet smile and a pat on the head. ...
