Sabre 135 w/ 25 jumps ~ 1.4 WL
tetra316 replied to Kimblair13's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Sheez his wl is 1.4?! I didn't know that I was thinking more like 1.1 or 1.2. Now I would really like to see him land it on a no wind day! (just j/k if you didn't catch that) -
how long were you jumping before your first reserve ride?
tetra316 replied to jtval's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
still waiting, 4 years and 700 jumps later.. -

Good canopy for learning to swoop?
tetra316 replied to tetra316's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I was wondering about that. I've heard some say its hard to transition after learning on a stiletto due to the short recovery arc..... -
Good canopy for learning to swoop?
tetra316 replied to tetra316's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I love my sabre 2 and totally agree. Although my wingloading right now is 1.1. I don't think to down size to a 120 at this point with 700 jumps(400 on my 135) is too drastic a move Just looking for a little more speed when it's windy, which is usually always the case here. -
Good canopy for learning to swoop?
tetra316 replied to tetra316's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Yeah, yeah I know what you both think, that's why I asked here and not you guys. More opinions, more info- maybe. Kim - your 120 sounds really good, for the right price of course -
Good canopy for learning to swoop?
tetra316 replied to tetra316's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I'm looking at getting a 120 or similar size and was thinking of a crossfire 2 as a great platform for learning to swoop also. What other canopys are similar to a crossfire or would you recommend? -
No I didn't. Did he get caught on something? Did the student do okay?

I got my main when I bought a coupon for a free pd canopy from a guy in the classifieds. He ended up with it from doing some camera work at a boogie but didn't need another canopy so he sold it for a couple hundred less than l could buy the canopy from a dealer for. Great deal, just make sure of the prices of the equipment before you buy a coupon and decide if its really worth it.

And what kind of mal did I have so I can plan for it

quickest way to set up a tertiary canopy rig
tetra316 replied to katzurki's topic in Gear and Rigging
A guy at our dz had a harness built that you wear under your normal rig. The harness basically looks like a kiting harness with a three ring attachment and cutaway handle. I think it cost a couple hundred dollars and he got an old main to used as a cutaway. He also charges others to jump it so you'd be getting back the money you spent on it. I think its a pretty easy set up and you don't have to jump completely new gear to do it. -
You can see Mt McKinnley from Skydive Alaska, only on a clear day though.

Wow, I'm shaking just typing this.

Did the same thing! The dz was using a borrowed airport for the weekend for a bunch of tandems from the university. We were supposed to go up on Saturday but got winded out. We were told to show up at 6am the next day and they would make sure we got up before the wind hit. Liked it so much I did two tandems within an hour at 6am in the morning! My earliest jump yet. -
Or better yet find someone with a harness designed for intentional cutaways. A guy at our dz had the manufacturer build him a cutway harness, can't remember which one, that looks like your normal rig harness except has a flat pad on the back. You wear it under your normal rig and attach canopy to the cutaway harness via the same 3 rings and put the canopy in a paper bag, hold it on exit and release. Once you clear the tail of the plane of course. The cutaway harness has the same cutaway system then you just pull your main. He modified the cutaway pillow with a loop that sits behind your normal cutaway handle and hangs below making it very easy to find and pull. I've done it three times and love it I think everyone should do an intentional cutaway as soon as possible. For me it relieved some of the anxiety of never having had to cutaway yet. (knocks on wood)

How about can an airport commission require a skydiving business to have liabilitiy insurance that covers their operations and names the city as an insured? I'm not talking about slip and fall coverage as I understand that is required regardless of the nature of the business. I thought that type of insurance was optional and up to the business owner. This is a small local airport but it recieves federal funding.

Thanks! Do you know if his book is included in the price when you go to his course? Of course the next time your over this way I'd love to borrow it.

I plan on going to Brian Germains canopy course in June, just searching for the different ideas out there.
-
That sounds like what he was trying to expain. I haven't heard much discussion on this. Most advice is simply to the bigger the better when learning to swoop.
-
I think that's what I was trying to question. Should I be turning faster (losing less altitude) whether on a 135 or 120 or is a slower turn rate (losing more altitude) better for learning.
-
What do you think of why I was told a 120 might be better, (because I'm not diving it as long)? Or do you think that makes no difference since my wingloading is only 1.1
-
I'm currently jumping a sabre2 135 at about 1.1 and practicing 90 and 180's on landing. I was thinking it would be easier to learn by staying on my 135 until I feel comfortable doing 270s. But a couple people have said it might be better to get a 120 or so if I want to practice hook turns as the canopy will turn and recover faster, making it easier to judge the right height and I won't have to keep it in a dive as long since it will turn faster making it safer because I'm diving it for a shorter time. Does this make sense? I can't remember exactly how it was explained to me. What are your thoughts on this? Should I stick with my current 1.1 wingloading or would increasing it a bit allow me to learn faster?

Funniest moments in skydiving
tetra316 replied to livendive's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
My first summer jumping we had a boogie that featured a hop and pop into a nearby farm and accuracy landing. The area was about a 1/4 of the size of our lz and bordered on one side by power lines. The aff instructor in charge of the boogie told me I couldn't do the jump since I only had about 50 jumps and no off landings but the dzo overruled her. When I landed right on the bullseye I started cracking up seeing her face. Priceless -
We were talking about this exact senerio at the dz this weekend. I was told if you pulled something, ie the pc, but nothing happened you should cutaway first then pull silver to prevent the chance of your main possible releasing into your reserve or something like this. I'm not questioning what you did at all just seeking info and what others think.
