10 things to say when you are caught sleeping at you rdesk at work!
Shotgun replied to pop's topic in The Bonfire
"Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit amphetamines." -
I do now (after looking it up the other day). I know a few of their songs, but I had never paid any attention to them (obviously), so for some reason I thought it was a guy who called himself T. Rex. (Yes, feel free to laugh at me. ) Ok the discussion on the "Real World Jurassic Park" can continue now...

That's what I would have voted, but I didn't vote because I didn't agree with any of the choices. The USA is certainly not perfect, but if anyone can show me a truly perfect place to live then I might consider it (but I'm pretty sure that no such place exists).
-
Yeah, that's one I probably should have just kept to myself.... But hey, I never really listened to T. Rex... And I was half asleep while reading the news. I'm really not that dumb all the time, I swear.
-
I had a total blonde moment the other day when I saw a headline saying something about scientists finding soft tissue from T. Rex. I thought, "T. Rex died??? And why are they taking samples of his soft tissue?" (and then I realized they were talking about dinosaurs.) But then it turned out to be even more of a blonde moment when I decided to look up more info on T. Rex, only to discover that was the name of the band, not of a single guy.

Skydiving Video Set to Van Halen's "Jump"?
Shotgun replied to Shotgun's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Thanks for all the replies. I've always wondered about that video, but it only just occurred to me to ask on here. The VHS copy I have is so old that the last time I watched it (about two years ago) I decided I shouldn't play the tape again unless I can copy it to a digital format because it looked like it was on it's last leg. (And there is some other stuff on that tape that I wouldn't want to lose.) And maybe this is a stupid question, but how were they able to lip sync while in freefall? It's done so well that it looks like they had to have been hearing the song. I'd love to see the other video you mentioned too... -
Yeah, I love that song too.
-
Yeah, the first thing that popped into my head was Nirvana's Unplugged album. Also The Who's "Live at Leeds" is really good.

I agree. I was just replying to what he had written, which seemed to be comparing smoking a little marijuana to getting black-out drunk. But, all things considered, I do believe that alcohol is a more dangerous drug than marijuana.
-
The difference is that getting black-out drunk on a regular basis will do a lot more damage to the body than smoking a little marijuana. (Not saying that marijuana won't damage the body too, but it's less harmful than excessive drinking.) It does seem silly for marijuana to be illegal when we have a far more dangerous drug (alcohol) that is not only legal but quite socially acceptable and widely used.

Skydiving Video Set to Van Halen's "Jump"?
Shotgun replied to Shotgun's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I have an old copy of a video set to Van Halen's song "Jump". It looks like it was made in the late 80's(?) It starts out with a guy talking to his girlfriend in a restaurant while singing along with the song. Then him and a few other guys get on the plane as they (and the pilot) are singing "Might as well jump!" which they continue singing in the plane and even while in freefall. It seems that I was told it was made at Skydive Houston, but I'm really not sure. I'm just curious if anyone knows who the people are in the video or where it was filmed? It's really well done and pretty funny. -
Nice pics... Looks like you are quite the adventurer. Here's a few of my faves: Alyssum Cosmo Alice
-
Thanks... Voodew explained that to me too. Now I feel like even more of a dumbass. Guess I moved away just in time to miss that video. Does anyone want to post it for me? And what is the new paintjob on it? Is it purple now?
-
Sorry, Douva... I didn't mean to bring up a plane crash in your "good press" thread! I was just trying to be funny, but I am a dumbass sometimes. I think it's neat that austin360 did such a nice article about you and Skydive San Marcos (my original home dz, which I miss very much BTW). The "how to talk like a skydiver" part was funny too.
-
Hey, they left this picture out of the story! Just kidding... Nice article!

Yes, meatloaf must have ketchup... He tastes much better that way. "I want you... I need you. But there ain't no way that I'm ever gonna love you. But don't... be.... sad.... 'Cause two out of three ain't bad."

As I said: There are not many simple answers to anything in life, but if you found a simple answer that worked for you then that is great. I'm just pointing out that everyone's bodies are different and people have different issues to deal with. I'm not going to assume that what works for me will automatically work for someone else as I may have no idea what they are actually dealing with.
-
I just want you to know... Since you put that in your sig line, I of course had to try it... And I did succeed... But now I think I have dislocated my shoulder and pulled a muscle in my tongue. But I don't know what to tell you about the moles. I gave up fighting the freakin' gophers in my yard and am now mostly growing things in pots.

Have you been obese in the past and had this solution work for you? I haven't. And even if I had, I would not just assume that the same solution would work for everyone else. There are many factors involved, and those factors are going to be different for different people. For some, the solution may be that simple, but for others it may not be. (And even if it is that simple, there may be other complicated factors involved that are preventing that person from using more energy than they are consuming). It's easy to pass judgment about what others should or should not do to solve their problems when you are not the person dealing with their problem. This is not directed just at you, but at those who are claiming that anyone who is obese simply needs to "be more motivated" or "try harder to succeed"... It may not be as simple as that.

Student kills 5 at school and grandparents
Shotgun replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in Speakers Corner
I agree, Michele. But I don't think it would be possible to discuss that issue here in Speaker's Corner without it getting turned right back into a gun control debate. -
I have read of a study in mice where they found an obesity (ob) gene that codes for leptin, which has a role in regulating appetite. Mice that had defective ob genes would eat about three times as much as their body needed and therefore become obese. They were able to control the weight of these mice by giving them leptin injections. Apparently they have tried this same treatment on humans, but without success so far. (There was another gene in mice that coded for leptin receptors. If this gene was defective the mice would also become obese but the leptin injections would not help because having more leptin doesn't do any good if there are not enough receptors for it; this is where gene therapy may come in to play eventually.) But in answer to your question, yes I think it is possible to be genetically predisposed to obesity. (Though I am certainly no expert!) You can also be predisposed to obesity if you are overfed as a child. In children, fat cells are still growing and dividing, so an overfed child will end up with an excess of fat cells. As an adult, fat cells usually do not divide; an adult generally gains or loses weight as a result of changes in the size of their fat cells (not an increase in number). So an adult that was overfed as a child is likely to have more fat cells than they would if they had not been overfed.

Hell, I don't even know what I said, but it made the silly French man laugh.
