I just have to give great kudos to Kobus Wiese and the rest of the folks at Chicagoland skydiving. We (ground rush in Beaumont Tx) leased the Porter from them for the winter months. The Porter was damaged and is being repaired, so they sent us their super otter. Knowning in advance that we couldn't fill it or keep it flying back to back loads. They have been so great taking up light loads or what ever it took to get us in the air. It would have been perfectly understandable for them to hold the Otter because we just didn't have enough folks. I'm just really glad to say that there is still honor out there and still people that will go above and beyond that to help out fellow skydivers. They really have earned our business and more importantly our friendship and I hope that anyone in the Chicago area visit these remarkable skydivers, pilots, and staff. I know I have a trip for the summer planning right now. Thanks to Kobus Wiese and the rest of the folks at Chicagoland.

Yea its fairly normal on our DZ for one person to go get someone, unless we suspect a problem. I don't really see anything wrong with that.

Wow frankly I'm surprised at the results here. A closing pin necklace in no way makes you a skydiver. Last time I looked at my logbook I was a skydiver and I would not wear a closing pin necklace. Just not my kind of thing. I have to agree its no different then wearing a hat, or starter jacket or many of the other things out there that represent a sport. The closing pin necklace is nothing more then a trinket, now if it were given as an award for something then that would be much different. But alas its just jewelry, so make an order and give the wuffo's something to talk about and it might even actually promote our sport so

If you were not here this weekend you missed out. We put up 15 Otter loads on saturday and had a great time doing it. I hope you weren't watching the weather report. If so we were jumping while you were watching. Remember $16 super otter jumps to somewhere around 14,000 give or take a grand. Well where the hell are you?

I had two reserve rides on a Tempo 150 loaded about 1.4 I found it sluggish to fly, had a steep glide, turns were slow and the landings were both fine stand ups. No problems at all, overall I really like the Tempo
-
That's so true, but why? I was told don't know the validity that this was started because of so many spin ups on so called elliptical canopies. The manufacturers were trying to find away to change peoples perceptions. Kinda like the chicken or the egg thing. It would be nice to have something valid to help in making choices.
-
How about this one. Semi elliptical, tapered, slightly tapered, elliptical and full elliptical. There's really no such animal as these and certainly they don't determine the performance of a canopy. Some of the modern semi elliptical novice canopies are more elliptical then the so-called full elliptical HP expert canopies. Atair has been trying for several years to teach this, only to be ridiculed and now Aerodyne is trying to teach the same thing and even get it standardized calling it the Planform factor. But the old myths are hard to break!

Yea we used to do the Neches River Festival RW meet every year in the spring. It was a great fun event. But that time of year is just not weather conducive to good jumping. Usually very cloudy and /or even worse very windy. So after loosing big bucks bringing in an Otter and setting things up they just decided they couldn't afford to put it on anymore. That was in the Queen Air days of the DZ. I guess it's always had bad luck with aircraft. We can only hope that will change in the near future.

I sent mine in last year this time for it's four year. It was gone a long time so I called them. They said it failed the testing and had to be sent back to Germany. When I got it back it had no information with it as to what they did, so I called. They said it failed for temperature extreme's and that "unless I jumped on the sun, or at the north pole it would have worked just fine" I did not get a warm fuzzy feeling from what they said. Bottom line don't count on your cypres

I'm not sure when the Otter will be down, but we're only open Saturday and Sunday so that's when it'll be flying. As far as turn out, I have no idea they're not really doing anything special except for the cheaper jumps to try to draw a few more folks. Rumor has it now that it will fly with as few as 11 on the load. Wow like the Porter? I thought that was one ugly paint job, but I sure loved the ride! Thanks for all the vibes now come on out and jump at a small DZ atmosphere with a huge landing area and a Super Otter (at least for a while anyway)
-
Actually the Porter left us and went to Calf. for the week and was supposed to come back this weekend. It broke out west and never made it back. We will definitely take care of the Otter, we're really looking forward to it. We're a fairly small DZ so I imagine it will fly light loads most of the time, it should come back to you all in great shape.

I almost wish everyone did this at least once. Now you know you don't have to make a low turn to get into the wind when your just to low to do it. You can survive and rather well I might add a down wind landing. Bad job, great experience! Hey we all brain fart once in awhile. Glad you made out ok.

Sorry Dave I don't know the difference, all I know is it blew the friggin engine. By the way it was the same time that Waller's otter was down for an engine
-
Nope! Thanks for reminding me why I love this place!!

Hey folks Ground Rush in Beaumont Tx was jumping a Twin Bonanza but it broke. So we leased a C-206 and it broke. Well then we leased a C-182 from Waller and it blew an engine. So we leased a Porter from Chicago land and it broke too. Well I told you all that just to tell you this. Chicago land is now sending us their super Otter, I know, not much for some of you folks but a hell of deal for us. We need some support to keep it flying and hell just to keep it for a few weeks. So it looks like $16 jumps from a super otter to 14,000 next weekend. If your anywhere in the area please come out and help us support the super otter make some $16 jumps and meet the bad luck boys of Beaumont! We'll buy some beer and I have no doubt you'll have a good time, so give us a shout. If you can't make it please send some vibes our way we need a plane for at least a couple of weekends before it quits.

I wear glasses what are best goggles for me?
cloud9 replied to hawkflight's topic in Gear and Rigging
I found it much easier to go with daily wear contacts. They were inexpensive, easy to use and throw them away at the end of the day. You can wear pretty much any goggles with them but I prefer flex they just seem to fit better. I couldn't find any goggles that fit over glasses and keep them in place. I didn't try any of the prescription type though. -
it's a good idea to treat your log book like that at least until you get your license. There are many jumps that have to be verivied for license requirements. Like night jumps, RW, Freefall time water training and lots of other stuff. So keep with it get it signed by the right folks and it will make license time much easier.

We all know that it is a sin for a Taliban male to see any Woman other than his wife naked, and that he must Commit suicide if he does, so this Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Eastern time all American women are asked to walk out of their house completely naked to help weed out any neighborhood terrorists. Circling your block for one hour is recommended for this anti-terrorist effort. All men are to position themselves in lawn chairs in front of their house to prove they are not Taliban, and to demonstrate that they think it's okay to see nude women other than their wife and to show support for all American women And since the Taliban also does not approve of alcohol, a cold six-pack of beer at your side is further proof of your Anti-Taliban sentiment. The American government appreciates your efforts to root out terrorists and applauds your participation in this anti-terrorist activity.

Oh, the nerve of some skydivers!!
cloud9 replied to dreamsville's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Oh, the nerve of some skydivers!! I know what you mean, on the forums i visit a skydiver started a thread just to gossip about other skydivers. How cool is that? -
It only takes a couple of weeks if it passes. Mine failed and took a little over 6 weeks to get back.

How much do you trust your cypres?
cloud9 replied to Harksaw's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
for those of you who said you would, consider this. I recently sent my cypres in for it's four year and it failed and had to be sent back to Germany for repairs. I wouldn't have even know it failed if I hadn't called. It was taking to long to get back so I called. They said it probably would have worked because it failed the extreme test, high and low temps. Something to think about though. -
I went from a 150 Hornet to a 150 Heatwave. For a time I was jumping both. I can say with out a doubt they fly much different. The Heatwave which fly’s very similar to a Stiletto turned faster, dove longer and harder (more speed) it also had quite a bit of over steer to get used to. It had a little more bottom end lift. It required a lot more attention on openings. It was definitely a transition going from the Hornet to the Heatwave in the same size wing loading. The packing volume seemed to be the same.

I've never considered people that jump PD products and like them to be the PD snobs. The snobs are the ones that say things to people that jump other products like. "Why don't you buy a real canopy." or The only elliptical worth having is a stiletto. Or everyone is copying PD. Those are the snobs. PD makes a great product so do several other manufacturers.

This seems to be very reasonable and looks on the surface like it would be very beneficial to all. However lets look a little deeper. I have asked before and am sincere when I ask again where do you draw the line? Is it ok for a jumper with 1000 jumps to frap in but not ok for a jumper with 200? I guess what I mean by this is 72 of the first 75 wing suit jumpers burned in. With this mentality would we have wing suits today? Or would we have said the cost is to high? I remember when squares malfunctioned less then every 100 jumps and people were killed jumping them. Would we have squares today? What happens if you stop 200 jump folks from killing themselves under canopy and all you have left is 1000 jumps folks dying is that ok? If it is to you, look around you because someone standing nearby is saying no its not ok, we need to stop that too. I have nothing but respect for the idea of saving our bother and sisters, but still have many questions about the methods.
