What is this canopy? Old heavy 5 cell
Niki1 replied to pchapman's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I think the Sled was a flat canopy. That is, it had no "cathedral". When it's side packed, the outside lines should be longer than the middle lines. Howard, What sizr are those canopies? They look like 28 ft. Those guys must have been really tough to survive landings with equipment under such a small canopy. I wonder what the injury numbers were. Do you mean what I call it the next day or what I tell the police officer that night? The next day I may say I was shitfaced. To the police officer, "I'm sober as a judge, sharp as tack. Uh, I've just got these two bad ankles and that's why I seem a littlw unsteady." Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossilbe before they were done. Voted out? I don't think so. I think that when the team finds out what he's been doing, and I really hope they do, Probst will be saying, "What happened to the short fat guy. We can't find him." And his teamates will say, "I don't know, Who cares?" The female police officer seemed to right on with her gut feeling. Being voted off is just not adequate for the level of assholeness this guy has. How could he be totally humiliated and shown to be the complete jerk that he is? This cretin is way worse than the lawyers in the game.

Diapers & reefing & deployment methods of later sport rounds?
Niki1 replied to pchapman's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I was the second kid on my block to get a Piglet. Probably the first generation of real RW gear. It came with a bag made out of a really light weigt aircraft fabric. The first tome I packed it, it took 2 of us to get it into the bag and 3 of us to close the container. I thought it opened pretty hard. Then I got a Starlite. I would guess that those things opened in about 175 feet from pilot chute inflation to sitting in the saddle. A lot like jumping off a 9 story building with an 8 story kevlar tether. A "spider slider" was put out for it and that made it better. Like only a 7 story jump with a 6 story kevlar tether. I used a bag for it. I got it with my first Wonder Hog. For a little while, I had a Navy 26" Conical. I pulled the apex down to the skirt, put crown lines on it for packing, a triple dog house and turn slots. It had all the drive of a WDI. I used a diaper on it to keep a sleeve out of the modiications. I also put a slider on my Stato Star. That didn't seem to affect the opening much. It sure didn't affect the landing of the damn thing. In short, rounds open better from a ssleeve and ram airs better from a bag. Oh. There were a few people who tried sleeves on their ram airs but they were awkward to pack and didn't seem to be any improvment to anything. The first diapered reserves that I remember were in the late "70s. They may have been earlier but that's when I remember them. I think the first I saw was the 2 Bite Diaper on a Strong LoPo. You made 2 bites with ONE line group on the diaper and put the slack of the other line group in the first bite(s) in in the pack tray. The rest of the lines were stowed in the pack tray as was the convention at the time. I'm not sure I ever heard about a properly packed 2 Bite Diaper having a problem. (John Sherman at the Jump Shack could tell you more. He has studied it a lot more than I have.) A short time later, Full diapers were the normal thing. Most had horizontal line stows and acted much like the line stow section of a sleeve but without the sleeve. Strongs full diaper had vertical line stows so as to hold the folded skirt and bottom of the canopy much tighter. Apparently the horizontal stow diapers "spit" on occasson and causee problems. That's probably a complete but concise history of deplotment devices. Except for POD which stood for "Parachute Opening Devece" It was really just a bag that was split and would lay open and flat. You stacked your PC (Para Commander) on it and then wrapped it around the canopy. I looked to me like change for change sake and more trouble than the long sleeve that I already had for my PC. That would take us up ram air reserves and "free bags" (yeah, right. They cost $280) But that's another chapter. He'll have Mike Huckabee to deal with next time. And I'm afraid that he will be shouted down. It looks to me like the evangelicals have hijacked the Republican party just as Al-Quida has hijacked Islam. Radical Fundementalism sucks no matter which side you're talking about. Huckabee, Paul....thank you, you just conformed 8 years of Obama. Again, thank you. I certainly did not mean to group Ron Paul with Mike Huckabee. I think Huckabee would be the second coming of GWB. Only with a better IQ. Ron Paul says things that make sence to me and he seems to piss off an equal number of people on both ends of the spectrum. The ones in the middle seem to think his ideas are worth considering. I wanted Colin Powell to get into the race (no pun intended) but that didn't happen. I would really get behind a Paul / Powell ticket. In either order. Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossilbe before they were done. I was really impressed when I saw him on the Bill Mahr show. I started paying attention to him and he made more sence than anyone else out there including the eventual nominees. He seems like a pragmatic middle of the road guy. He didn't sound like a Republican or a Democrat. That's the kind of guy I'd vote for. He'll have Mike Huckabee to deal with next time. There is no point in telling anyone that doesn't live in your own house. None. They need to know so they won't be surprised when they get a call from the emergency room, but other than that . . . it's a waste of breath.

Should Corporations & Unions Be Allowed to "Influence" (Buy) Elections?
Niki1 replied to Andy9o8's topic in Speakers Corner
To compare and contast corporations and unions could be another thread that would rival the DB Cooper thread in "History and Trivea." For the purpose of this thread, they are the same typw of non-voting entities, albeit on the opposite side of most issues, that should not have been granted "personhood". Letting these entities that can't vote shout down people who can vote is like giving North Koreas views on nuclear disarmament equal wieght with the US State Dept. Should Corporations & Unions Be Allowed to "Influence" (Buy) Elections?

You don't. You can't. Of course, a good way would be to perhaps repeal the Seventeenth Amendment. The one that changed the system where senators are elected by the state legislators to one where Senators are popularly elected. Perhaps if we can keep the Senate out of campiagning we could have a system where the money isn't put in quite so much because they don't have to worry so much about campaign funds. The 17th Amendment really caused some serious problems far in excess of the problems it allevaitaed. While we're at it, repeal the 16th Amendment. Let the House deal with popular elections. Outstanding idea!! How do we get a movement like that started? I'll sign up right now. I'll send money (as soon as I get a job.) Would the Senate have to vote on this? Or would they all have to recuse themselves? Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossilbe before they were done. A lovely friend of mine used to hear comments about not having a "job" while she spent time at home raising her children. I always told her that it was a "job" - just not one that is typically put on a resume. Also... some don't like it referred to as a "job" because it's not really the "typical" 9-5, 40hrs week and 2w vacation type "job." Like owning a farm is not a "job." It's a lifestyle. It's the most important job in the world. No training required. The responsibilty of raiseing a little human being to have a good idia of right and wrong is more than I ever wanted. That's why I never had children. I can understand how rewarding it may be but it just is not my bag. I admit that I'm too selfish to expect myself to do a good job of it. Hell I've been barely able to take care of myself most of my life. I'm really glad there are people who want to do it and that a LOT of them are actually pretty good at it. I like other people kids. To see them learn somethong is one of the most awsome things in the world. I'm glad that it's the women who bear the children and give birth. NO WAY I'd go through that. I think if the men had to give birth, the species would die out in one generation.

Should Corporations & Unions Be Allowed to "Influence" (Buy) Elections?
Niki1 replied to Andy9o8's topic in Speakers Corner
One of the problems is that free speech is'st free. Or rather the speech is free but it's the volumn of the speech has a price. It costs a lot of money for all the billboards, the TV ads and all the other marketing that goes toward selling a candidate. That money buys the volumn, the loudness of that "free speech." When corporations are granted personhood, they are granted an unfair advantage over the individual VOTER. The corporation doesn't vote but can spend enough money to make a candidate beholden to it. My one vote doesn't count for much against that. Even if I were a small buseness, I couldn't compete against the big corporations. I might be able to give the office holder free landscaping or build an addition onto his house but that is bribery and will get me thrown in jail. I'm thinking, if you don't vote, you should not be able to shout me down. Let everyone vote who meets the above definiton of Person, persons can group together for their common cause but it must be a group of persons. Bollocks, is that what some folks up in the hills call "mountain oysters?" I've heard of 'em, never tried 'em.
