  5. This is just a little f'd up. And the world thinks the U.S. is simple-minded? From Washington Post PARIS, Dec. 17 -- President Jacques Chirac, warning that growing ethnic and religious divisions threatened to erode France's tradition of equality, called Wednesday for a new law that would ban Muslim girls' headscarves and all other overt religious symbols from the country's public schools. "Secularism is not negotiable," Chirac said in a somber, half-hour, nationally televised speech. "The schools will remain secular." "The Muslim veil, whatever name it is given, the kippa [the Jewish skullcap also known as a yarmulke], or the cross, if of manifestly excessive dimensions, don't have a place in the walls of public schools," Chirac said. He said small, discreet signs, like tiny crosses or Stars of David should be allowed. By taking a firm line against headscarves and growing "communitarianism," Chirac was essentially following the advice of a government-appointed panel, which last week recommended the ban on veils. But Chirac today went further than the commission, saying private businesses should be allowed to ban their Muslim employees from wearing headscarves "for reasons of security or client contact," and patients at public hospitals should not be allowed to refuse treatment from doctors of the opposite sex. Some French Muslim men reportedly have refused to allow male doctors to treat their wives. He also rejected the panel's recommendation that a Jewish and Muslim holiday be added to the school calendar, now laden with Christian holidays that few here celebrate for religious reasons. By proposing a new nationwide ban on headscarves and other religious items, Chirac was hoping to settle a debate between diversity and equality that has raged here on and off for the last 15 years, as immigration from Muslim countries has soared making Islam now the country's second-largest religion. Since 1989, French authorities have left individual schools to decide whether Muslim girls could cover their heads, and the result has been a patchwork of regulations, with expulsions accelerating recently as more young girls from Muslim immigrant families appear to be turning toward the veil. The debate has taken place amid been fears that Islamic extremism is growing among France's Muslim population, now estimated at between 5 and 7 million people. In his speech today, Chirac warned that "fanaticism is gaining ground." "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

  11. Found it. A guy at my DZ was asking for a .pdf someone had recently put together about canopy control. I felt obliged. NSFW, by the way. Is that what it was, Alana. 13. Found a picture: http://www.sunpath.com/bergerbag2.htm Are there any bags like this that have locking stowes so that you don't have to worry so much about the fit? Or, could the same effect be achieved just by single stowing non-locking bands. Or is there really any point to all of this besides splitting threads on something that already works. Tube stows better? I'll go do a search on those. Also, don't you have any worries about your coiled lines catching on something as they unspool from your back up, rather than your bag down? Perhaps a loop catching on the closing loop tab? "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  14. Breaking off from the 7cell vs. 9cell thread. I have some questions about this. I've read that line dump doesn't lead to a hard opening as long as it's not the locking stows, Jimbo says he's left 6 to 8 ft of unstowed line with no problem on opening. On the other hand I was told that bandless bags had to fit an exact pack volume. Is this because there is not a locking stow so whatever mechanism keeps the bag shut until line stretch needs to be tight? "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  15. Hey guys, I'm starting a new thread for questions about line dump and bandless stows. Will edit to link. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=812398;#812398 "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  16. This is very true. My first canopy was a Turbo ZX 185 (9 cell), my second a Tri Hybrid 160. I was so psyched when I got the Tri because it felt like such a hot canopy (pause to clean the coffee you just spit all over your 'puter.) I'm back on the ZX since the Tri is getting repaired. I can get much more out of it now, even though it's so friggin big that I have to muscle it through everything. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  17. You know what? You're right. That's what I said, that "we should kill child molesters and the kids too." Ok, I'm going to go slap myself in the face now. Out. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  18. I know we're getting sidetracked but I think you're trying to un-sidetrack now. I'm asking you why you're so interested in defending Koresh from accusations of child molestation. Devil's advocate? I think we're covered the fact that everything there went wrong and the actions of the ATF resulted in pointless deaths. As I said in my very first post on this forum: How about instead of people just bashing their government that they do something about it. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=809081;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#809181 Nothing is going to get accomplished on a skydive forum except the exercise of bouncing ideas back and forth. I have personally learned a few thing from people's points of view, so bonus. Still, people should get involved or else nothing will happen. 21. Sure thing, Mike: We'll start with a usdoj report. http://www.usdoj.gov/05publications/waco/wacoseven.html A typical newpiece http://www.time.com/time/daily/newsfiles/waco/051793.html From another former member: http://www.fountain.btinternet.co.uk/koresh/bunds.html Do we need more? 22. "being part of a "cult" is protected by the First Amendment. " Education, research, study, and destructive are the key words there. They don't say anything about banning them. Koresh had sex with kids, I'd call that destructive. "the burning of the compound was "mass suicide." " Yeah, I read that one with a grain of salt. Pointless of them to make that claim. It was obviously not a Jonestown scenario. "Guilty until proven innocent, eh? That's one of my favorite concepts of the "New America." " That goes with my comment about proving that Aliens don't exist. But really, I think he was nuts. At least tell me I'm wrong and why. He fucked little kids and taught them how to kill themselves. Jury says, "Guilty of being nuts." "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  23. "That's laughable. Please show me any definitive evidence of suicide. (you can leave out the suicide by cop theories.) " There is none. You're missing my point. Read my previous posts. The ATF provoked them into a stance that there was no out other than death. They could have surrendered but they were shown that the ATF would rather shoot than arrest. Pressed for a speedy conclusion the ATF began ramming and gassing the compound. A fire broke out and everyone died. Those who fought against the ATF commited doomed themselves by not surrendering immediately, they endangered the lives of everyone inside. The ATF, in the same way caused the deaths of everyone inside. Now, as for suicide other than the figurative sense. Koresh did teach and preach suicide as a means. Proving this happened or didn't happen is like proving that aliens DON'T exist. The physical proof isn't there or is tainted. Koresh was NUTS and was manipulative. Prove that he wasn't. http://www.rickross.com/groups/waco.html "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  24. I'm not a rigger, but I would like to be one at some point. What is wrong with refusing to pack someone's gear if you think their reserve is too small or doesn't meet some criteria, either by the mfr or otherwise. I think a rigger has a moral obligation to do the right thing rather than give up and pack it anyway. Tom, please do be burned out about this. Refusing to pack a pilot's gear might just put it in their head that they're not being safe. Refusing to pack a jumper's gear will do the same thing. Yeah, they'll just go to someone else, but when an accident report comes out and the manufacturer claims that this gear was overloaded, at least it won't be your name on the card. Let's be the better people (roll "We are the World") and not let an accident happen rather than rely on historical data that it hasn't happened yet. I often hear that skydiving equipment has been tried and tested via a method of failure and success. I think that's garbage. People are capable of forseeing a problem. Most will just not react until something bad has happened. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
