How many decibels is she getting in free fall? The worst part of the dive cycle for me? When I get stuck sitting right by an engine on a twin Otter. Good grief, those engines are LOUD.
-
I don't use an Audible. Good Audibles come w/adjustable volumes, though. So, I imagine you could turn them up, no? It would be different for me. Especially on my bad ear side. I'm hypersensitive to noise. I'd hear an Audible, no problem.

I wondered about this when I read about the Pulse, too. Does not F111 style material become more porous w/use? Would that not change the flight characteristics of the canopy over time?

Decibels are decibels... I'm glad you protected your hearing during your army days. As you said yourself. It really wasn't that hard to do. Why would you stop now? The OP has posted what happened to him after years of jumping. What, you just want to lose a little of your hearing?

It depends on how noisy your environment is: TABLE G-16 - PERMISSIBLE NOISE EXPOSURES (1) ______________________________________________________________ | Duration per day, hours | Sound level dBA slow response ____________________________|_________________________________ | 8...........................| 90 6...........................| 92 4...........................| 95 3...........................| 97 2...........................| 100 1 1/2 ......................| 102 1...........................| 105 1/2 ........................| 110 1/4 or less................| 115 ____________________________|________________________________ Footnote(1) When the daily noise exposure is composed of two or more periods of noise exposure of different levels, their combined effect should be considered, rather than the individual effect of each. If the sum of the following fractions: C(1)/T(1) + C(2)/T(2) C(n)/T(n) exceeds unity, then, the mixed exposure should be considered to exceed the limit value. Cn indicates the total time of exposure at a specified noise level, and Tn indicates the total time of exposure permitted at that level. Exposure to impulsive or impact noise should not exceed 140 dB peak sound pressure level. http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_document?p_table=standards&p_id=9735 There are good foam plugs, & crappy ones. You'll know a good set when you put them in. I like Howard Leight brand plugs: http://www.howardleight.com/ The foam style plugs will give about a 30 decibel reduction. I've been on construction sites that have been very noisy. Too noisy for foam plugs. In which case, you'd need muffs. When I shoot, especially @an indoor range? I always wear shooting muffs. The loud reports can be transmitted through the Mastoid Processes (bony lump behind ears), & cause hearing damage. It all depends on how loud & enclosed your work environment is.

All of the above. We can lose about fifty percent of our hair cells (Cochlea) before noticing a deficit. A simple hearing test @an ENT will tell how much you've lost. If you're struggling to hear someone yelling @the top of their lungs? It sounds like it's time to get checked. You don't want to lose what you have left, right?

That's my main concern. I've already got a tube in one ear due to pressurization problems, and I sure as shit don't want to have to put a tube in the other one. Any word as to how keeping earplugs in the whole ride could affect equlization/pressurization? Foam earplugs form an imperfect seal. So, equalization usually isn't a problem. I've worn them in the plane, & in free fall w/no issues. People don't usually have tubes in their ears, though. I'd ask my ENT about that, to be safe.

Which, IMO, fell far short of what change was hoped for and I'm not addressing D to R change...I'm addressing insane to sane change. Yep...

Some members seem to LOVE to argue, here. I'm not one of them. Lest I be accused of dumping & running. I'll put out an example. Want to radicalize a large segment of the population? Take away their houses. I don't mean people who never should have been given loans in the first place. I mean people who lost their livelihoods when the POSs crashed the economy. People who plugged away, & did the right things for decades. Steal homes & futures away from millions of hardworking Americans, & watch what happens. Things are going the other way? Have you not noticed the increasing voter outrage over the past few years?

I disagree, but you're entitled to your opinion.

Find the guy, & don't post what follows, here. Then, go deal w/Mike @Chuting Star. I also feel you should "Out" this turkey in this thread. Think of it as a public service announcement. We all have a right to know in case he resurfaces later. Good Luck getting your money back.

Dunno. I think we could learn a thing or two from the Chinese, sometimes. Remember those crooked Chinese business owners who intentionally caused many babies to die from mercury(?) poisoning a few years back? They weren't sent to the Chinese Club Fed for a few years to chill out in style. They were executed as a warning to others not to cross that line. Barbaric? I would say effective & just. Many people have lost faith in a legal system that only protects the privileged. The time is coming in this country when people will have to take responsibility for their actions.

Hi, I'm sorry for your diagnosis. I too, have hearing damage & tinnitus. Yeah, it sux. FWIW, you will get used to it. It takes time. Human beings are wonderfully adaptive organisms.

I was trying to remember where I saw this vid a few months ago. Thanks for re-posting it. I've decided. I'm not going to cut away first if this ever happens to me. Could we please change the subject now? All the dire scenarios & videos are starting to make me nervous...

I vas making Amerikanski joke. Thank You. I do realize this.

"Any ideas???" Save up some more money... Also, what Dave said.

Hu_boy... I'm glad I like to pull high. I'll have an extra sec to flip a coin. Thanx for the explanations, guys.

OK, Newb questions I'm not seeing here. If the Main decides to deploy while the Reserve is inflating. Are you not dewercs? Would not cutting it away first, clear it out of the way? If it should open @that critical point? Also, I'm aware most biplanes are stable. Those biplanes usually have the reserve behind the main. Wouldn't the faster(?) main push the reserve in front of it, potentially causing a downplane?

Hi Kevin, That tunnel is going to be a big help to you. I, & a number of other students would've greatly benefited from one during AFF. There aren't any around here. You're gonna have a blast. Enjoy the ride.

"...some people have told me that it would have to be amputated..." Once upon a time. If the rod exploded a large section of the femur. That might have been the case. Now, injuries far worse than that can be repaired. I used to work in the ORs. I once asked this same question of an ortho surgeon. Ask your Doctor. He'll tell you.
-
I'm re-re-re-reading Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. It's a marvelous story w/many chapters entirely absent in Jackson's excellent screen adaptation.
-
How would they cut the rod if its inside the bone? If the femur breaks again? You may have a bent rod in the middle of it. They would cut the rod @the break, & withdraw both ends. Then, they'd repair the bone. They may need to use a length of donor bone to do this. Barry Sheene won championships racing w/rods in his legs in the Seventies. He used to fear this, too (& he wasn't afraid of much). Orthopaedics have come a long way over the last 30yrs. If you do suffer such an injury. It can be repaired.
-
"Not sure what would happen if I broke my femur again since I got that rod in it." They'd cut the rod, & remove the pieces separately. The subsequent repair might also include donor bone.

I think they should use his name. Apparently, the guy did a lot of good, & it is funny. They can play this in the lobby: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gX8cIdXlHuU
