I went ahead and pulled up a transcript, I may have been a little bit overzealous with my description of him saying they should do it...when he really said they should take a look at doing it President Obama: "Now, if the Republicans have ideas for how to improve our health care system, if they want to suggest modifications that would deliver faster and more effective reform to a health care system that has been wildly expensive for too many families and businesses and certainly for our federal government, I’m happy to consider some of those ideas. You know, for example, I know one of the things that’s come up is that the 1099 provision in the health care bill appears to be too burdensome for small businesses. It just involves too much paperwork, too much filing. It’s probably counterproductive. It was designed to make sure that revenue was raised to help pay for some of the other provisions, but if it ends up just being so much trouble that small businesses find it difficult to manage, that's something that we should take a look at." http://www.kaiserhealthnews.org/Stories/2010/November/04/health-reform-obama-republicans-election-news-conference-document.aspx?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+NewFromKaiserHealthNews+%28New+From+Kaiser+Health+News%29 Peace, love and hoppiness

If i remember correctly, the President specifically highlighted the 1099 provision in his press conference yesterday afternoon as something the congress should send to his office to take out because of the strain it would but on businesses as highlighted in this thread. Peace, love and hoppiness

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=M-ECMTNcewI This video genuinely amused me. NSFW ETA: just so this is a conversation, what would you do if you looked out your window to see this display on the street in front of your dwelling. My response would include a lawn chair, popcorn and a sixer Peace, love and hoppiness

Not to mention paying to shut down Mumbai and its roads for two days. The number may be higher than the actual figure, but when its a huge dollar figure to send the president to India largely to appease the out-sourcing industry in that country, in a time when both spending and outsourcing are under fire can be drawn as an example of the president being out of touch. http://politics.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/11/03/black-republicans-win-first-congress-seats-2003 Wich is the reason they did go after Rubio Cubin American Senator A threat to the Hispanic voteing block And God forbid, his is a Republican Maybe someone should inform them that Cubans as a group are more conservative and vote in greater numbers for Republicans that whites do. Just saying, Cubans being republicans isn't a shocker. Peace, love and hoppiness

Oh, I see. Well as the loud woman in glasses made abundantly clear in that video, intelligence is relative. Peace, love and hoppiness

So the implication is Republicans vote for the stupid Democrats in addition to the stupid Republicans? I don't get it. Peace, love and hoppiness

I would imagine just about everyone they talked to had a similar reaction. I think I might call the president a Keynesian in the the foreign policy class I'm about to walk into and gauge the reactions to see if it holds true. Peace, love and hoppiness

Just as a sidebar, I'm curious what percentage of the US population as a whole could give a basic definition for Keynesian economics. I'm willing to bet less than 15%. Video still made me laugh though. Peace, love and hoppiness

Campus Concealed Carry likely to make a showing in TX this session

It's hardcore in Georgia too, and trying to have a rational conversation with professors about it is about as pleasant as a root canal. You would think people committed to academia and research would avoid the whole emotional response...My abnormal psychology professor started crying when she started talking about them taking away gun free zones and allowing us to have guns in our cars. It may not be selectively busting people, but if you take a look at that article I posted above you'll see the incidence of searches and frisks for minorities is absurdly higher than it is for whites. While the same amount of people may be carrying more drugs, if the police search one group disproportionately higher than the other, they will have a disproportional amount of arrests. Draw your own conclusions about why rates of convictions are higher and sentences are longer. I'd hope it's simply that since blacks generally occupy a lower SES than whites they just can't afford to get anything but an overworked incompetent public defender and not the alternative that judges just enjoy filling prisons with blacks. It's pretty absurd people want to make a mountain out of an anthill over this. The president is in love with these driving references for some reason. I'm remembering that one speech which had the line "I don't want to give them the keys back, they don't know how to drive." I heard this story on the drive home today, and of course the logical implication he is making is that he's welcoming the Republicans to come along for a ride in the changemobile but he's not going to have any backseat driving. As socially liberal as I might be, I think people just need to give it a rest. Peace, love and hoppiness

Any real difference between the two groups would most likely be from spurious variables that have nothing to do with what ideology the camp was founded with. The Republican ascendancy in the southeast from 1964-1992 demonstrates clearly how only a few generations can diametrically change the political affiliations of a group Peace, love and hoppiness

I'm not saying there wasn't a crime committed, just pointing out that there is not a higher incidence of drug use among blacks and there is a hugely disproportionate rate of arrests and an even more egregious rate of jail sentences. Thus pointing out a racial disparity is completely valid and IMO a reasonable point for legalization. There's also a fun book called dorm room dealers if anyone wants to learn more about the absurdity in the enforcement of the drug war. Peace, love and hoppiness

Well actually... "While African Americans comprise 13% of the US population and 14% of monthly drug users they are 37% of the people arrested for drug offenses - according to 2009 Congressional testimony by Marc Mauer of The Sentencing Project. " "As a result, African Americans, who are 13% of the population and 14% of drug users, are not only 37% of the people arrested for drugs but 56% of the people in state prisons for drug offenses." Taken from a fantastic article by Bill Quigley called Fourteen Examples of Racism in Criminal Justice System http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bill-quigley/fourteen-examples-of-raci_b_658947.html Peace, love and hoppiness

If Republicans take control of the house the Liberals will blame
scruffy replied to mirage62's topic in Speakers Corner
While that is true in a lot of circumstances, if I was a small business owner right now I would really like to know what my tax rate next year is going to be. Budgetary issues like that really concern me with a stalemated congress. There is also the issue of what will happen if congress can't get together to fix obamacare, fixing social security, addressing our trade imbalance, the list goes on. While the government that governs best governs least, our status quo right now isn't sustainable. Peace, love and hoppiness -

The real question is are politicians mature enough to deal with a divided government now that the dems keeping the house is virtually impossible. It's a opportunity to have a productive bipartisan government...but my money is on it turns into a 2 year pissing contest and the American people continue to suffer for it. I've never had any problems at all with mine that I've had for 2-3years or so now, what seems to be the trouble? Peace, love and hoppiness

WBC might have a 1st amendment protection claim, but there is no way in hell this "evil bitch" does. Those parents need to enjoy what time they can with their daughter and then go after this lady for everything her trashy ass has for intentional infliction of emotional distress.
