  1. I would have thought you'd be in favor of that... "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  2. It's a lot less than $400/hr. that was claimed, though. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  3. Well, some actual facts about attorney compensation in VA: **The Supreme Court of Virginia has established separate hourly rate guidelines for capital cases not to exceed $200 per hour in court and $150 per hour out of court. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  4. perhaps we should have a program to give free electric cars for offroading ((provided they are quiet enough to not disturb the natural karma of mother gaia's warm bosom)) Where can I pick up my Obamacar? "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  5. I work with folks with Intellectual Disabilities. There is a vast body of literature about them including research on cognitive process. I'll be interested to see this full article when it is available and see what is different from what is already known. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  6. Here is the USPA advisory about the situation, issued three years ago yesterday. Just adding for more information and context: http://www.uspa.org/Portals/0/Downloads/Skydiver%20Advisory3-31-2010.pdf "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  7. The AAD they had was a Cypres. It fires at 750 feet at speeds greater than 78 mile per hour. The AAD fires when it senses that those parameters have been met. At 750 feet and 120 mph you are 4 seconds from impact. The reserve is certified to open in 3 seconds or 300 feet (from container opening) so if everything works perfectly it is enough time, but the margins are very, very thin. One little thing goes wrong and there is not enough time. If speeds are faster than 120 the margins are even thinner. There are a number of reasons that people have speculated that have caused these reserves and others in similar incidents to not open in time. Some of those reasons include too big a reserve shoved in to too small a container, pilot chute hesitations, issues with rig geometry (particularly with smaller rigs) inhibiting reserve deployment. Since the overall number of incidents is relatively small and the number of variables (rig manufacturere, rig size, reserve size, packing, etc) are large and the evidence is often ambiguous, it is very difficult to nail down the why of any incident. In the Z-hills case, we just don't know (and all the facts are not known). The main thing I think to take is that AADs are not a magic solution that will automatically save you. There is a chance they might, but a chance they might not as well. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  8. Honda Fit? It is cheap and efficient, lots of room for a roof rack. A little underpowered. Price point is important. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  9. The President said he inhaled. I don't think he partakes any longer. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  10. Yes they did. I'm not 100% which court overturned it or what the boundaries are, but it probably is not binding on Texas (although the jurisprudence on this issues is pretty strong and consistent. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  11. likely unconstitutional, as it should be. Was already found an unconstitutional search in Fl. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  12. "Applicants who test positive for drugs would be barred from receiving TANF funds for 12 months." So what is Texas going to do with an indigent mother and her kids if the mother tests positive? Let them starve on the streets? Export them to Louisiana? Already provisions for substitute benefit recipients in the codes in the states. You just don't have the mandatory screening for everybody, you actually have to have some cause and factual basis. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  13. Not all churches. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  14. In theory if the student is on his back then the AAD should fire higher, as it would be out of his burble. Nonetheless, you are right ot note that 700 +/- feet is not much time, less than 3 second, and there is no guarantee you are going to get an open parachute from there. Between the activation altitude, higher speeds, too tight reserves, and any number of other factors, both known and unknown, the margins on an AAD fire are very, very small. 15. Larger dealers often have some inventory and that can help greatly. I bought my first system by calling a bunch of the gear stores and asking what they had in used equipment and found a nice package deal. I am a fairly common size, so that helped. Local riggers are also a useful resource as they will know who has gear that they are thinking about selling. You are right that used gear is often sold locally or regionally and not on DZ.com. 16. Interesting, although .01% of the federal spending is not very much. Just wanted to address the point in the clip I left. I work with people w/ disabilities. Marriage is a horrible choice on a purely financial basis for people w/ disabilities--especially those receiving Medicaid and SSI. This is true even if both parties are disabled. I advise my clients against it when they ask my opinion. They are on the financial margin anyway and cannot afford any reduction in benefits. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  17. How is this different than if an infertile hetero couple did the same thing using a donor sperm or egg, then broke up and later went after the donor???? It's not. Actually, with respect, it is. Going through a clinic, the donor is protected from situations like this legally. At the time the example here occurred, going through a clinic was not in any way an option for a non-hetero couple, hence no legal protection in this scenario. Apparently the laws have been updated since. EDIT: Typing on autopilot, made a glaring error in the first sentence. That presumes going thru an agency with protections of contractual arrangements, not a private, less formal arrangement. If you assume the hetero couple is married than the presumption of paternity applies regardless of whether a contract and agency are used or whether a less formal arrangement is present. [guys are stuck paying child support after being cuckolded all the time, and that is the epitome of a "less formal arrangment"]. None of that applies to an unmarried heterosexual couple (unless they put the guys' name of the birth certificate) and certain state rulings and laws may differ. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  18. Also, if the hetero couple is married, than the child is presumed to be his. If they are not married but the couple puts his name on the birth certificate, it is also legally his. Such presumptions can sometimes be challenged but it is pretty rare for such a challenge to be successful. Gay couple probably don't have the option to put two women on the birth certificate... 19. In the USPA an AFF instructor is a higher rating and has higher training requirements. He (or she) needs to have at least 6 hours of freefall time and a C license to qualify. Skills that an instructor must display include helping students establish and maintain stability through rollovers and spin stops and pulling for a student. Instructors are with the student during the first 7 or 8 jumps (about, w/ no repeats) until the student has demonstrated consistent ability to maintain altitude awareness and pull for himself, among other tasks. A coach is a much more introductory instructional rating available to skydivers with as few as 100 jumps and a B license. They assist "advanced" students with some of the basic skills of formation skydiving such as tracking, swooping and docking, adjusting fall rate, etc. These are students who have already demonstrated pulling for themselves, altitude awareness, ability to regain stability, etc. This is from about dive 8 to dive 25. An instructor can perform the duties of the coach (help on later dives with more advanced students) but a coach may not perform the duties of an instructor. Coaches are not to pull for students. That is the basic thrust of the differences but I am not a coach or instructor so I may have missed a detail or two. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  20. Do you have to write a script to try millions of combinations to read a mailbox? Don No, but I bet I could write a script to collect that information much faster using Google Street View. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  21. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4462196#4462196 We're gonna keep flogging this weak link. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  22. Just saw this post and was looking at their page. Apparently they have city approval and have a time table up to open in Summer 2014. Anybody local w/ more detailed knowledge? Have they started construction? "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  23. Sounds to me more like reading somebody's house number and last name from their mailbox that they put on the curb. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  24. I remember something similar to this many years ago with a large bank's online access. Someone noticed that their account number was being passed as a URL variable, so they tried to access another account by just changing the variable and it worked. Once they'd authenticated to their own account, they could access / manipulate any other account. I don't remember the details. Maybe someone else does. It does feel wrong to me for someone to go looking for information by scripting a brute-force search for valid IDs though. That's crossing a line. Wrong and legal are very different concepts. It may be wrong. Based on my understanding of the technology I don't see how it can be illegal. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  25. I like A or C. I've always favored a bit simpler design and the other ones just look a little busier to me. Any of them are OK, though. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
