Have you heard the song recorded as a tribute to women missing from Vancouver's downtown east side?? More than 60 artists contributed to the song, titled: The Streets Where You Live They include top Canadian musicians such as Tragically Hip singer Gord Downie, Barenaked Ladies singer Steven Page, Sarah Harmer, Blue Rodeo's Jim Cuddy, Bif Naked, Colin James and David Usher. All of the song's royalties will go to the non-profit Buried Heart Society. It runs a treatment centre for female drug addicts. Robert Willy Pickton, a Port Coquitlam pig farmer, is charged with killing 15 women who are among 67 identified as missing from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. The man accused of being Canada's worst serial killer preliminary hearing began today. The preliminary hearing is held to allow Judge David Stone to determine if there is enough evidence against Robert Pickton to proceed to a trial that would not likely begin for at least a year. The 53-year-old Pickton has been in custody since late February, when he was charged with the murders of Sereena Abotsway and Mona Wilson. A huge police investigative team has been painstakingly searching Pickton's Port Coquitlam, (B.C. Canada) farm for almost a year. In the ensuing months, he was also charged with the murders of Diane Rock, Jacqueline McDonell, Heather Bottomley, Andrea Joesbury, Brenda Wolfe, Jennifer Furminger, Helen Hallmark, Patricia Johnson, Georgina Papin, Heather Chinnock, Tanya Holyk, Sherry Irving and Inga Hall. The 15 were among 61 women from the Downtown Eastside -- mostly drug-addicted prostitutes -- who disappeared from the poverty-stricken neighbourhood. The murder counts against Pickton so far are four more than the number admitted to by Canada's most notorious serial killer, Clifford Olson. Police added four more names Wednesday to the list of 63 women who have disappeared since 1978, bringing the total to 67. Forensic science: Its role in the missing women investigation: Ten acres is a lot of ground to cover with a fine-toothed comb. But that's essentially what teams of investigators are doing on the Pickton pig farm in Port Coquitlam, B.C. They are trying to find any tiny piece of evidence – bone fragments (bone slivers, even), hair, joints, teeth – anything that might contain a few cells, enough for a usable sample of DNA. But the size of sample that’s needed to be usable has shrunk, even in the last few years. "A blood sample – a dot of an 'i' from 10-point type – would easily be recoverable as DNA," says Kevin McElfresh, senior vice-president of the BODE technology group in Virginia, a DNA lab the RCMP has used in several cases. McElfresh says cigarette butts, hairs and small bone fragments could sometimes yield DNA samples a few years ago, but it was hit and miss. "Now, cigarette butts are a ton of DNA. Not a problem," he says. "We can get DNA from the tags of shirts that people have been wearing, not even bloody," McElfresh says. The ability to find DNA in such tiny fragments also has its drawbacks, though. When police told Maggie deVries that her sister Sarah's DNA had been found on Robert Pickton's pig farm, they pointed out that it wasn't enough evidence to lay charges against him. "(The DNA) doesn't even really prove that Sarah was ever there," said deVries. "It just proves something she touched was there." Investigators found 3,000 pieces of evidence in the top levels of the dirt on the Pickton farm. To continue their searches, though, police brought in heavy excavation equipment to sift through the soil, including two 50-foot flat conveyer belts and two dump trucks. The investigation team is made up of 91 people: 30 to 40 police and 52 forensic and archeological experts. Several archaological students were hired to help go through the dirt as it passes by on the conveyer belts and identify remains. In June, police estimated that the excavation could take a year. In September, they said the investigation will go on indefinitely. "Now, one factor to the benefit of the police is criminals are lazy, so they're not going to be 40 feet below the surface," says Rossmo. Other forensic experts will focus on reconstructing the crime scene by looking at how the bones were scattered around the farm. Smiles

I'm not sure.... Wow, I'm so happy I wasn't raised as a child to, so can make my own decisions....my son is reading Ishmael in English 12 and said I should give it a read........ Did the entire cosmic process of creation come to an end right here on this little planet with the appearance of man??..evolution didn't come to a halt, the planetary process of creation didn't come to a halt....mans appearance caused no more stir than the jellyfish's. Our Religions: are they the Religions of Humanity Itself? In spite of the terrible mess we've made of this planet, we do think we can run the world, and if we continue to think this, it is going to be the death of us. Was man in fact born to become an agriculturalist and civilization builder?? Why do we need religion? Why are new ones being created every day?...because we still profoundly feel that we do not know how to live? There is no one right way for people to live--never has been and never will be. ah..I wonder often but my partner was raised a jehovah witness by his mother/ mom & dad separated due to religion/....he has after 9-11 decided to read the bible, and recently announced he wants to study with the jehovah witness's. I am afeared for our relationship. I simply asked him to let me know what changes will take place in our relationship....??? Now I am tempted to find everything I know "wrong" about jehovahs religion, to help him out/ ...wrong move. To each their own/ but don't dare try to preach to me/ or save me..thanx very much. Smiles

My little study: Cut away failure was one of the most frequent causes of fatal accidents in parachuting. This fact was reported by international safety records as well as national reports. Fatal accidents of this type were equally common among experienced and students ??? I could never figure that one out... So- in 1990 prevention of cut-away failure was of crucial importance worldwide. cut-away, no reserve activation fatalities in 1990= 11 in 1989= 22... In 85% of fatal accidents the parachutist hit the ground with an operational parachute still on their back (not pulled or pulled to low) Documented cypres saves since 1991- to June 2001 = 239 They are not recorded with much detail so what I could find approx. was 33 cypres saves due to cut-away failure (jumper cut away without pulling reserve) 5 possible student cypres saves- with incredible 28 expert cypres saves. I think 10 saves were recorded as "had trouble finding/hand deploy or trouble with hand deploy" then cut-away, no reserve pull. Maybe 12 saves were mals cut-away/no reserve pull. A couple saves were pilot chute in tow/ cut-away/ no reserve pull. Reasons for no reserve pull is unclear- unstable trying to locate visually the reserve handle, pulled cut-away instead of reserve,...????????????? So- I am more confused now, than when I started! Awesome the rate has decreased so drastically and cypres saves.... All I can figure as I have not experience a cut-away, is that once main is cut-away and jumper returns to freefall- fright, panic/ mental block/jumper cannot access stored information in long term memory= incapacitation to react. Looking for more information, thanx Smiles

ah! research is good! I have been reading but do not understand the comparison? re: low pull/no pull fatalities decrease means increase in open canopy fatalities? Kinda figure with ZP fabric happening in 90's with more rigidity in flight= smaller, faster, lighter canopies made. Then radical turns= increase in airspeed & lift, long glide= consequences of pilot miscalculations= fatalities Smiles

thanx all, have printed off all 11 pages of cypres saves and will go through each one to find out how many were cut-away failures (cut-away but didn't pull reserve) Have the 1992 CISM-Technical Brochure No 48e, -Possible solutions to the problem of cut-away failure..by R.Maire- (comprehensive study about cut-away failure with a view to ending ten year series of fatal accidents..Medical experts, clinical and sports psycologists, scientists, researchers and parachutists conducted) So- 10 years later with cypres saves was hoping to find a more recent study had been conducted - with answers & solutions to- jumper cutting away- but not pulling reserve???? Handle Touches/"practice" pulls?
smiles replied to AggieDave's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
handle touches??? "practice" pulls....A RITUAL. The brain has "lower memory" and "higher memory" In an emergency situation the brain can only access "higher memory". Repetitive training is great but repetitive training under stress stores emergency procedures in the brains "higher memory" ..so.. reviewing emergency procedures after your canopy is open- sky cleared around you from other canopies- perfect time to dirt dive malfunctions and look- reach- grab handles- pretend to execute pull. Also great time to look and reach (pretend to execute pull) is in freefall. Re: LOOK- not only to SEE handles...(your eyes are your strongest sense)....LOOK and keep your eyes on your handles even once you've grabbed them- then follow through procedures of pulling (in emergecy situation.) If you look, reach...grab...then start looking at your canopy, the ground...whatever, thought process of your procedures and training shifts. (thought destroys the flow) Just as I dirt dive prior to jumping, I dirt dive malfunctions, thinking through my reaction. Whenever and however a jumper goes over emergency procedures isn't nearly important as taking the time to do it. http://www.windowsmedia.com/9series/download/download.asp new HighMAT format: "It's a little different from VCD. HighMAT is designed to solve the following problems: 'I have a new DVD player that plays my MP3 and WMA discs but it takes too long to load my music & playlists, doesn't do a good job of finding / displaying artist / album information, and the on-screen menu of my music is hard to navigate; or 'I want to burn a cheap disc that has all my home movies and pictures from 2002, organized cleanly so I can view them quickly' HighMAT is really just way of structuring data on today's existing CD/DVD discs for playback of today's existing formats (MP3, WMA, WMV, JPG, etc). Burn a HighMAT Disc w/ MM2 or WM Player 9 Series and you'll see it's 100% compatible with the existing data formats. The difference is an index file and folder structure. When it's played back in a DVD Player that supports HighMAT, you'll get a 'better together' experience - faster loading, richer metadata and on-screen handling of multiple types of data (Photos, Music, Video) - all on the same disc. And it's codec / format agnostic." Definitely sounds like a winner.
