airtwardo Being macho on a bike will just get you hurt. And I'm not saying getting killed. In some cases punching out is the easy way out. A year or two to recover from an accident isn't unusual. Never recovering...all too common. When you get on a bike you check your ego, your anger, your depression.......all that at the door. And everyone drops their bike. I myself didn't check my emotions at the door once and paid the price with a 65mph crash. And the ritual of gearing up helps one do all that....almost like a Vinyasa, a preparation for the road ahead. Now on my first jump I didn't notice it but you guys and gals do the same thing on your way up. Instead of zipping up and gearing up in anticipation, you guys and gals do it in your head on the way to altitude. And on my second and third jump I tried it as well and it greatly improved my awareness and really relaxed me. So, pleas ride safe, and pleas wear all your gear all the time no matter how hot it is. Sure there may be more bikers and sky divers......but your a part of both communities and well...looking at the numbers....there needs to be more sky divers in the world. It's an Army joke. Eat enough MRE's, use a little too much Tabasco and the ever popular sand paper that the DoD provides as toilet paper and well.....you get the picture. But the jumping in a t shirt and shorts, I have to admit, it was comfortable. When I ride, I'm in boots, gloves, a leather jacket or a jacket that is heavily padded and padded riding pants. I've never felt those speeds with out that gear on and it was kind of nice! Though I may wear the riding pants in the future just to keep my bum safe on the landing. Ok here is how I look at it. I have a bike. I ride to work as much as I can at 40mpg ~ $2.50 a day. The bike second hand cost me, $4,000 Oil change every 3K miles ~ $40 Every year she has to be serviced for something $400 New rubbers every 3 oil changes $300 And every thing I wear to keep my self alive $1,000 Long story short......almost every hobby is expensive. Just shy of maybe gardening or raising snails....all hobbies become expensive at some level. This one? I don't know? I just paid $1,500 for all my classes and thus far I've jumped 3 times. Will I buy gear? Maybe this winter? I don't know. If anything hobbies help us organize our lives and our pockets. Nothing worse than having no hobbies and a house full of those $19.95 things? I think my friend was saying turn the racing suit into a wing suit via a few zippers and material. Again, he was being a smart ass! You know it's so funny. In the riding world, we have this saying ATGATT All the Gear All The Time And by gear i mean protective equipment, helmet, boots, gloves, pants and jacket. But this....this community, this sport is so different. I couldn't immagine riding with out my gear. It focuses you, it gets you into the right frame of thought and protects you from what may come. Nope... ~that's actually why skydiving jumpsuits have 'handles' on the arms & legs... to make removal of the body quick & easy... If the bike guy is good....and I've done this in the past. He can get a good piece of meet, marinate it well, wrap it up in a few layers of foil and place it on or near the engine. You need to go on travel with me! There is this place in Cape Town RSA that has a pol that is two stories tall! How no one has gotten killed is beyond me! But....if you flirt right and tip right the girls will let you slide down! Some of the most.....aaahh....artistic work I've ever seen done was in Montreal. I grew up in Iran during the Iran Iraq war. In a strange way I wanted to be a fighter jock. Seeing those F-14's scream across the night sky to intercept the Iraqi Mirages was amazing.....if you don't take into account that the Iraqi planes were dropping 500lb bombs! When I came to the US and visited the NASA facility I thought...wow this would be cool! But turns our I'm a little color blind so no jet jock nor space cadet for me. Then in high school i realized I had a steady hand and I was great at biology....woo hoo! Dr. it is! Fun job hot chicks.....then saw the price tag for med school..... So I became an engineer.
