Your opinion on the Lodi hitting the tail incident
diablopilot replied to mrbiceps's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Both parties are 100% at fault for creating a hazardous situation. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -
You're going to use 3 to 5 times more paint with a DIY grade paint sprayer. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Fuck it, whatever it is can't be as bad as the rumor that I heard about me a few years ago..... Walked onto the DZ at Skydive Arizona, hadn't been there in 2 to 3 years, and first person I bump into who I know says "Hey! We heard you died." ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Correction, the song still sucks, this version just has a much higher level of talent in the performance. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Lodi Facing Million Dollar Lawsuit

It's a $5 HnP. If it's literally going to cost a buck or two, yeah, it matters. Once again, is safety worth a "buck or two"? ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

And what of the pilot for putting you in danger? ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -
Not currently certified, have had a card on and off since I was 12. Far more people are saved through proper use of EMS (911) than CPR however. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

I'd stick with the ProTec. You are FAR more likely to encounter a wall with your head in the tunnel than in the sky, and the ProTec is designed to protect whatever you might keep in your head from that sort of encounter batter than your average skydiving helmet. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Lodi Facing Million Dollar Lawsuit

Spot, it's unsafe to put jumpers out on a climbing jumprun. Period. Ask Larry Hill. It's also no secret that Bill had his FAA A&P/IA rating pulled. How many airplanes has he wrecked? How many friends have you had nearly killed because he was at the controls doing it "his way". How many major FAR violations are acceptable? Or is it all ok, because that's the stuff the average fun jumper never sees/looks for, and well the prices are low? ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. I have jumped at Lodi, and because of many safety issues I choose not to again. I have never been employed by anyone at The Parachute Center (Lodi) ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

Yeah, like this, right? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_American_internment Im disappointed in you. fixed. Why so? I don't condone either action, however if you're going to point out that people should have deserted because the actions violated their moral grounds, then one should have expected both parties to bail.... ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. New equipment markup %???
diablopilot replied to bigbearfng's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm not in the business. None of this is any sort of secret. And if all you're looking for is a low price, you can get it, but as the old saying goes, "You can get it cheap, you can get quality, and you can get it fast, but never more than 2 of the three." We're lucky that anyone wants to sell gear in this industry OTHER than the manufacturers. When I was in sales, I can't count the number of times I spent 10 to 20 man hours measuring, educating, filling out order forms, securing a production slot, making order changes for a customer, only to have them take all that completed hard work and go to a trunk dealer who sold at 5% over cost. Hell, I've been undercut by a manufacturer before. The worst part is when the customer gets the gear has a problem, and the trunk dealer wants no part in solving it, they want the local gear shop to handle it. For free. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -
Lodi Facing Million Dollar Lawsuit

Karma is a mutha.... When it comes to the kid bringing the lawsuit, they never had the makings of a "skydiver", and shame on them.... But sympathy for Bill Dause? Give me a break..... If he's looking for money for a legal defense, how about the dollars he saved by not putting an instructor on the plane with S/L students? Or the mandatory aircraft maintenance he decided wasn't needed? Or the substandard wages he pays instructors? Or the several hundred dollars he stole from 3 very nice tandem students a couple weekends ago? I'm not feeling his pain. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

New equipment markup %???
diablopilot replied to bigbearfng's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Having worked in gear sales for 5 years I'll tell you this: The manufacturer sets the retail price, then offers the dealer a discount off of this as dealer cost. The largest (high volume) dealers get 30% very rarely they might get 35% if they are very high volume or a long time dealer. Here is the catch: All dealers have to discount from retail just to compete. Some items only 10 to 15%, while others as deep as 25%. There are the "trunk" dealers who have very little overhead (a website, some flyers) who will even cut down to 30% but there is little to no service after the sale from them. Some manufacturers have set maximum discounts the dealers are allowed to offer, however enforcement of this is weak. So, a dealer is very lucky to make 10 to 15% on a complete rig, and most don't sell one every day, some not even every week. Most gear shops make a better living on t-shirt and rigging sales. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

The longer I jump, the more I learn, but the greater the amount to learn becomes.

You may be hard pressed to find an instructor willing to fly that person. Or I should hope so. One thing an instructor should be committed to is putting them selves in harms way to prevent injury to the flier, and that includes making spots (catches) should the student get out of control. There has been more than one instructor seriously injured through making spots on heavy students. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Looks like big dive to build speed, plane out way high, toggle monkey it around a 360, flair and land. No trick, good timing, "meh" stunt. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

I agree that it's a poor move by the school, and they are a private institution free to allow what they wish. Hopefully people will vote with their feet and wallets and the situation will solve its self. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

So it's a small, small world...
diablopilot replied to diablopilot's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I did a tandem the other day, after the jump there is the usual "If you're hooked, we can help you with that" banter. The Student says "I'd love to but I don't know if my wife would allow me to." After some "who wears the pants" comments, the student tells us that his wife was really against this jump. It seems that she has an uncle that died skydiving. In Panama. Was training jumpers. Was kicked in freefall and knocked out. Had an "Automatic reserve thingy, but it wasn't turned on." Go figure..... ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -
I hope you're right about this one. Ive been burned the last two outings to the movies. Star Trek and Angels and Demons both sucked big time. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
